Western Bulldogs need points to secure their F/S selection. So a club in our position could theoretically bundle up a bunch of later picks which are worth more "points" than the WB 1st pick.

But there's so much that can happen until trade period that it's all guess work.

Think its a perfect storm mate.

Injuries have been a huge factor, now that is not an excuse but a fact. Till the bye rounds we had consistently 10 of our top 22 players out. We still managed however to still win more games then we lost so that was a positive. What's also hurt us is that the past fortnight after getting players back who in my opinion are still under done, we also have hand players injured during games, 4 against the saints and 3 against GCS.

Let me be clear, that is not the only reason why we lost but IMO it has an effect and you asked my opinion.

So we have a playing list who has played a taxing game plan the past 4 years, great success which means an extra 16 weeks of high intensity footy. Add the fact this off season was dramatically shorter then normal and its a longer season, our older boys bodies broke. It's not because dimma has lost the players and other rubbish in my opinion it is the fact our older types have been really exposed with the way the game's changed due to the rule changes, stack on shorter preseason which in turn increases our injury toll and boom we are where we are. Also lets not forget we are an assistant coach short due to the 100k fine. We have not been able to replace Leppa due to it and have had to change our coaches across all lines to compensate.

Is it disaster time ? Yes if you think footy stops this year and never is played again. IMO its not a disaster and may be a blessing in disguise. If we make the 8 great but if we dont we have a fantastic draft hand, we have a few fantastic targets we have identified to bring into the club. We wont have a dramatically shorten pre season like this year, so we can have full conditioning that our list needs and we still, make no mistake have very good players at the club.

I am happy to wager against anyone that we will play at minimum a PF next year. So those writing us off are more hoping so without looking at the big picture.

I’d be curious whether we target another KPD in the 23-26 age bracket or do we go draft a kid.

State of play for Richmond’s TEN off-contract stars as line ruled through Tigers’ season


With Richmond’s latest loss leading many to declare its premiership dynasty done and dusted, the club’s impending list management calls are crucial as it looks to regenerate for 2022 and beyond.

The Tigers will enter the 2021 off-season with significant draft collateral and the ability to secure some elite young talent, but there are a number of players currently on the list who will be needing clarity on their future.

While some are waiting on the club to make a move, free agency has put the power in the hands of others - here’s where every key out-of-contract player’s future sits.


David Astbury

An unrestricted free agent at year’s end. Was curtailed by injury last year before coming back and performing in the finals. He’ll be 31 heading into next season, so a one-year deal is likely be on the cards if he opts to keep playing.

Liam Baker

AFL Media reports Baker has triggered a one-year extension, taking him through until the end of 2022. Finished sixth in last year’s best and fairest count and continues to apply elite pressure to go with his ball-winning abilities.

Shai Bolton

The key domino in Richmond’s contract planning for 2022 and beyond. The 22-year-old looked set to recommit to the Tigers but a “contract impasse”, reported by the Herald Sun in June, has raised some doubts about his future. Both the Dockers and the Eagles are looking to lure Bolton home. Jon Ralph told Fox Sports News in June that Bolton’s manager Ralph Carr is telling Bolton he should stay, but it’s Bolton himself who is holding out and wants to wait until season’s end. It won’t make Richmond’s list management any easier given the other out-of-contract names that could be waiting on Bolton’s decision before their own futures become clearer.

Jason Castagna

Reported by SEN last month that Castagna was poised to sign a two-year deal to remain at Punt Road. At 24 years of age he looms as an important part of the future and has kicked 14.7 and played every game this year.

Mabior Chol

Given Chol was previously delisted by the Tigers before being added back onto the list, he qualitifes as an unrestricted free agent, so this decision really isn’t Richmond’s to make. Callum Coleman-Jones is a man in demand but there is plenty of interest for Chol, who continues to show promising glimpses of his capabilities in a ruck/forward role. One, or potentially both, of Chol and Coleman Jones is likely to be elsewhere next year for more opportunity, it’s just a matter of who.

Callum Coleman-Jones

Rival clubs are circling the 21-year-old and his form since coming into the senior side this year has sent his stocks soaring. Granted, he was subbed out on Thursday night with a calf injury, but he kicked multiple goals in his first three games and looked at home as the key tall forward target before Tom Lynch’s return sent him up the ground more. Jack Riewoldt will remain for at least another year along with Toby Nankervis. The Herald Sun reported earlier this year some clubs are prepared to offer up late first-round selections for Coleman-Jones. It seems either Coleman-Jones or fellow tall Mabior Chol will be playing elsewhere next year given the selection squeeze at Tigerland.

Bachar Houli

An unrestricted free agent at year’s end. Signed a one-year deal at the end of 2020. Hard to see Houli finishing his career at any club other than Richmond. Any year could be Houli’s last in the game, but the 33-year-old has been crucial to the Tigers’ defence yet again in 2021, particularly with the brutal injury toll they have in that department. Probably gets another one-year deal if he’s able to play out the season with this form and avoid any further soft-tissue injuries.

Kamdyn McIntosh

An unrestricted free agent at year’s end. The WA local told The Sunday Times earlier this year he wants to stay at Richmond and believes there’s a “strong enough relationship that they see the value in my wing role and how I play it”. Finished fifth in last year’s best and fairest count, while fellow 2012 draftee Nick Vlastuin penned a new five-year deal back in April.

Daniel Rioli

The club has opened talks with Rioli on a new deal according to AFL Media, with a two-year extension on the cards. Still, he can’t find a regular senior spot and is again on the outer at the selection table, playing VFL yet again and managing just 10 senior games and two as substitute in 2021. Fox Footy analyst David King believes the Tigers could fetch a “high second-round” pick for the 24-year-old in a move that would be beneficial to both parties.

Ivan Soldo

Currently on the club’s long-term injury list as he recovers from a left knee reconstructions and MCL surgery. AFL Media reports the 25-year-old is nearing a one-year contract extension.

Our poor form as a team may see Bolton resign earlier. He's the type of player who has more impact when we're winning, so he may not want to lower his value.

If Caddy can’t get a game at the moment with the players we have out surely he is traded at the end of the year. Too good for VFL and would get a game for some other teams. The club may as well get his pay off the books rather than play him in the VFL for another year.

And on top of the fact we have had a tonne of injuries and injuries to important players. This affects our cohesion on field. We have been up for 4 years, you can't stay at the top for ever.
I would be fine with the club taking a step back this year, freshen up some of the older players, get surgeries done earlier and get the players primed for next year.
With a fresh outlook, fresh legs, a good trade and draft period, we could set ourselves up for an extended period at the top again.

After what these guys have achieved and during covid last year I think the players, especially the senior players deserve an extra week or two from footy and time with their families.

I'd rather keep 26 and 30. We got Bolton with 26 didn't we? I'd back our recruiters to pick two good players with the picks we have, rather then 1 good player with 17

The issue with just sticking to the draft is that for the most part whoever we draft will be realistically 2 - 3 years away from being able to solidly contribute and make a difference on field plus we are restricted by who is actually available at those picks

The suggestion was trade picks 26 and 30 for pick 17. I would rather 2 picks in the second round then just one pick being end of first round.

I think we need a mixture of both youth and trading for established players. Teams with the success we have don't really ever have as many pics as what we have now, we're in a unique position with our draft hand, so we have to use it wisely.

Signing Bolton and trading for Cerra (at the right price) is a must for me. Then hit the next two drafts.
When Jack, Cotch, Houli, Astbury etc retire over the next couple of years and free up cap space, hopefully we can target one or two decent free agents.
