You know that period of time between the end of the season and trade week where angry supporters say everyone is expendable for the right price...... then when it may actually happen we get upset.

I'm not one of those people. I want our list in good shape for 2021 and beyond.

Shopping Dougal was so ******* dumb.

We didn’t

It’s the narrative spin the media put on it without ever actually quoting anyone as ever saying that. His manager simply paraphrased what Howard was told at an exit meeting

What we know is that C4 was on this board in September telling us doogs had a massive front ended contract put to him by a club with cap to burn and his management were playing games.

This came well before the exit meeting where he was supposedly told to look around.

How? He is contracted. If we wanted to control the narrative, the club could have nipped it in the bud and came out straight away by stating that he is contracted and a required player. The fact the club hasn't shows to me that we have actively told him to look around, which weakens the ability to get a good deal.

Dude. There’s been literally a dozen comments made by port staff that he’s a required player and will be at port if they don’t get what they want for him.

I wish our supporters were more clued in than a bunch of gossiping teenage girls and had the capability to actually look at what is happening rather than listen to word of mouth and overreact but here we are.

The real story should be criticism leveled at the club for being in a place where a 23yr old kpp we’ve backed in to the point we named him captain for a game is willing to walk for money. But that’s lost in furore over shit that never happened ffs.

thats more a dougal howard criticism than a club one

the club criticism remains shifting our best match for legit tall forwards into a new position and dropping him for not being great at it

the club one may have led to the dougal one, but no one made dougal nominate just one possible trade destination

Telling him he can leave, or pushing him to the point of wanting to leave. The difference is negligible.

Picking and choosing facts to suit their narrative.

Played some sanfl games this year, lucky to get a second round pick.

Contracted to 2022 and being offered $3 million over 5 years, no that dress is black and blue.

I posted this on the D&T board and I'll post it here too. Just a sampling of some of the young KPP's who spent time at state league level last year:

Reilly O'Brien
Harry McKay
Brody Mihocek
Peter Wright
Jeremy Finlayson
Rowan Marshall
Aliir Aliir
Oscar Allen
Josh Schache

Duds the lot of them, apparently

Howard goes to his exit interview with St Kilda's offer in his back pocket.

Port say We think you would be better suited to playing forward not defence.

Howard says I really want to play defence. I want to check my options. Knowing he has a massive offer in front of him.

Port say you're entitled to do that. But you are contracted and we will only accept a deal of significance for you.

That is not Port shopping him around.

They call Doogs “the Swingman”. In one match with the 2’s, I think it was at Port Pirie, Todd M played in the back lines in the last quarter. He did not look out of place. He’s the one who should be developed as the Justin W replacement. Justin is the quintessential “Swingman”
Doogs to be made into a specialist backman and is to stay in the defence.
I might be wasting my time with part of this post as Doogs might be St Kilda bound - I hope not, but if the offer from St Kilda is too tempting then go for it.

So we didn't encourage it at all?

Only after Dougal's manager put this Saints deal in his head and he saw dollar signs and thought OK then.

Make no mistake, this is Dougal's decision and his alone. The club have told him to explore his options only at the off chance that if the Saints are willing to throw a big contract at him, they are willing to pay overs for him too.

If not, he stays here.

This all went down long before his exit meeting.

“Given he is contracted to the end of 2022, the club will only entertain a trade with St Kilda if it is in our best interests to do so."

That there is the really important bit. It was NEVER in our best interests to entertain a trade. They never had anything that would be worth or while and the fact we would even consider trading a key position player says we don't know how to manage our list and our coaches dont care about height and structure. Now we've let Dougal know that he's expendable though. As I said, dumb.
agree .. at the end of day we don't have a surplus of decent tall defenders .. pick 12, 18 or whatever, not a good deal if it can't get us a replacement of equal or better ability for the same or less salary. it's not just a question of "pick value".

Why is there 0 conversation about GC trying to get Max up to the gold coast?

I also doubt that’s the way things happened

I continue to find it incredible that it's such a hard task to convince 18-30 year old men to get paid to play football on the Gold Coast rather than in Melbourne. Speaks to what a shit club it is.
Thats pretty much the story of every Gold Coast team in sport though, its more the region than the club imo.

I can’t imagine an ambitious young guy being on footballer money and choosing Gold Coast over pretty much anywhere else. You’d be on good coin but entirely anonymous, even locally.

There's small market NBA clubs that have been successful (ie the Spurs)
They need to steal that culture

And to be honest with the right cap structuring they could make him a grandfather offer

I'm a twin myself and if I were in that situation I would 100% be moving to play footy with my brother.

The SUNS are totally derelict in their duties if they aren't doing as much work on Max as they are on Ben, if not more.

And I think you're wrong. Stalemate.

Personally, I give it 50% odds either way.

It's entirely believable that the club told Howard to explore his options like we did with Hartlett. It's also entirely believable that Howard was not happy starting and finishing the season in the seconds and started to explore his options on his own. Given Howard doesn't appear to be a lock in our best 22, it's plausible the club would be ok with letting him go.

I get the feeling that both sides are bullshitting to an extent.
