Soligo would make a lot more sense from a player perspective (midfielder + gets a locker next to his buddy), but 14 to 9 would be a weird shift in isolation, too

I’m not sure why we aren’t just giving it to Sid

Existing players generally get first dibs on numbers, although it seems we have made an exception for Welsh

Don't usually make too much of a fuss about player numbers, but giving 9 to Draper seemed pretty straight forward, especially considering Sloane being his idol.
I agree on this one, doesn’t normally fuss me either but seemed a good fit.

Trying to think of players who Sid reminds me of, this guy was an absolute champion on and off field
and moved like Draper imo, hope he develops same. IMG_2045.jpeg

Well yeah, but if you're drafted to the club that youve supported your whole life and were desperate to play for, your reaction is always going to be different.
Nah, there were a number of folks on here at the time really not wanting to take McAsey. It will forever remain one of the big head scratching decisions.

I get why we did it, even if it wasnt the move I would have made.

AA U18 and the MVP in a side with Rowell and Anderson, in a spot on the ground where we really needed it at the time. Wouldnt have been an easy year to be drafted for a kid who had any doubts about the move away. Then some stuff with family happened and that was all she wrote.

Mind you it was he or Dylan Stephens.... probably a slight loss at this stage you'd say but Stephens hasnt amounted to anything either.

Stephens went before McAsey.

Yes, but that's irrelevant. Our draft order having McAsey ahead of Serong or Young is the massive fail.
Your post never followed up with this

I agree we whiffed and missed on some talent - I myself liked Serong - but again I can see the why we went McAsey once Stephens was gone

Its not irrelevant at all.

But what you say is also correct.
And if the big hearted AFL didn't step in and once again screw us over under the guise of keeping the two childhood best buddies together Matt Rowell and Noah Anderson using the priority pick to the Suns we'd never have traded down and taken Noah Anderson....Melbourne were always taking Jackson from a long way out.

Is my memory failing? Did we not ignore Stephens (correct decision) and trade down (to the wrong guy)?

Yes, we did. Had pick four, traded down to pick 6 and got a 1st round future pick (ended up being Pedlar).

At the time, it was super obvious we were going tall in the draft. McAsey was seen as far and away the best tall in the draft, which is why we went for him. Everyone else around us was picking mids, which is why we were able to trade down and still get him.

McAsey was viewed as a modern CHB who was mobile, a good user, and ready to play AFL almost immediately. And to be fair, he did play AFL in his first season. The issue with him was that he just didn't want it enough, and he certainly didn't want to be here.

Wow did they get that wrong. In fact the exact opposite - he wasn't mobile, a good user or ready to play. Must have been some ordinary CHF's that year that made him look good.

He was Metros MVP that year too.

Not a great year for tall forwards mind you

I remember watching his draft footage in the leadup to the draft and deciding he was 100% the draftee I wanted us to take. He looked every bit like a modern CHB, and we desperately needed a tall.

You say he wasn't ready to play, but he played straight away in his first season on the list as a key back. That's impressive in its own right.

The problem for him was clearly mental - and being away from home took away whatever resources he was used to relying on.
