Autopsy Round 1, 2023: Positives and Negatives vs North Melbourne

There are no positives
No matter how we try to spin it
No matter how many dot points we use to highlight players individual efforts
We just lost to last year's wooden spooner, and got crushed at contested ball, by a team that didn't even have a ruckman, for over 3 quarters

Let that sink in

Statistically our midfield looked ok, but in real game terms that were overwhelmingly ineffectual and spent large periods of the game looking like they couldn't care. Senior players lifted? Nah. It's easy to look like you are doing more when you spend the entire second quarter doing nothing

The sad thing is the club has sunk to such a low that we think our "effort" in such an inspid performance like this, deserves praise

We are bereft of energy, mongrel, aggression and leadership

It's like 2022 but worse. Last year we had some legitimate excuses for performances like these. This year, we don't

Melt ended
FOOTY. ISN'T. ****ING. LINEAR.

The sooner you campaigners realize that, the sooner your pathetic excuses of "melts" will actually mean something.

+ Noah Long with 7 round ball gets, which has always been a WCE weakness, most in the team without even playing midfield. 100% he'll be a mid when he adds more size.
Tbh 1 round ball get is a remarkable effort in AFL, let alone 7.

Cannot be playing both Williams and Jamo, the only way we'll get value out of them is if one of them pushes their way through a whole game solo and frees up a spot for another runner. Could name HEdwards to chop out and free up Gov and Barrass a little more also.

I love love love Jones. He's such a positive player, can absolutely forgive his mistakes because he's always looking to generate, create, attack, contest, never goes into his shell. Think he's definitely best behind the ball and pushing forward when required/to catch opposition out

100 per cent agree re: Jones

Terribly biased commentary again, the way they tried to analyse the Shuey free kick, as if they were hoping there was a camera on the grassy knoll, that showed somehing completely different to the obvious free kick every other camera showed.

meanwhile many questionable frees to north that went unmentioned without any replays.

The bad and ugly. Bailey Williams. Bloke just keeps on doing stupid shit and has the least game feel and awareness I've ever seen. How does he not jump to try to spoil on the goal line or feed the handball back to the runner on the kick out of full back with 90 seconds left. Absolute spanner

One angle of context i always look at is games of experience per player as i think when there is a large discrepancy it is the most reliable predictor of who will win the game if you knew nothing else about the two sides. The normal range is 70 games at the low end and 140 games plus at the high end.

Teams in the bottom 4 are usually putting teams with with 80 games per player or less on the park. Or otherwise if they are in the bottom 4 but not putting inexperienced teams on the park it means that the bottom has totally fallen out and there is internal dissent and strife at the club.

Teams in the top 4 are usually in the 130 plus range. North had an average of 80 games of experience per player today and we had an average of 110 games today. That was a significantly more experienced team we put on the park. I think in that context this was a very underwhelming performance. But it is only one game at this stage. Lets see a bigger sample size before judging.

On the plus side some old stagers such McGovern and Shuey did better than i was expecting. On the minus side i think we can just about put a line through Bailey Williams as a ruckman. We need to find a middle aged stop gap (like Hickey was) who can fill the role over the next 3 - 5 years and prevent us getting creamed at stoppages and clearances when Natanui is injured (which is often) and when he retires to buy us time to find another option to develop. And O'Neil is never going to cut the mustard either. Lets just make the call on that now also.

Negs
  • Oscar Allen running into goal and brain farting easiest goal ever
  • Gaff 35 out on the run, straight infront. Misses
  • Some absolute doozy free kicks today, some unexplainable. We had 3 or 4 for us and Norf 3 to 4 per quarter.
  • Our rucks

Pos
  • Long, loved his zip and speed and had some great moments. Umps killed him, the mark he took in the first quarter looked like it went 18m. Luckily got one late
  • Ginbey, was tackling machine and some nice gives in traffic.
  • Gov was excellent, slow start but was such a presence in defence. One error that gave them a goal but otherwise saved 6 to 7.

Thought tk was putrid last qtr. Was so unclean.. fumbles, missed handballs etc.

Liked the spirit the boys showed tho.
This year not so much worried about results just wanna see us have a crack and not roll over.

Long and Ginbey looked fantastic I hope their contract extensions are imminent.

Our biggest challenge ahead of us is finding a midfield that wants to compete as hard as they possibly can for four sustained quarters. Kelly and Sheed have shown that they believe this is an option, rather than a requirement. Shuey, Yeo, Ginbey Culley appears to be filled with players more willing to compete and I’m hoping availability will push one of kelly and sheed to the forward flank and the other to the wafl. I’d rather run hewett into match fitness through the afl than watch players pick and choose when they tackle and chase through the midfield.

Witherden had his most impressive preseason yet and we saw pretty much bang on what he’s delivered his career to date. If we’re not going to be competitive I don’t really see any point giving him, Cole or duggan games ahead of Hough or bazzo when he’s fit again.

I’m not his biggest fan but thought petrucelle made some better efforts when he came on and he was good against the crows. I think he should be aiming for a wing position with hunt on the other and play JJ off half back. Gaff did some decent things today but his disposal and decision making just aren’t afl standard anymore and he’s not quick enough to offset it.

That umpiring was absolute bullshit. Give us those same soft frees inside 50 and we win by 3-4 goals.

Mind you, us regressing back to stale ball movement in Q2 and half of Q3 didn't help. If we can build on the quick style we saw in Q1 and back end of Q3, we can turn the corner quickly.

I feel a number of our veterans are still too slow. Gaff is pretty much useless. TK can't be an onballer, he'd be better as a goal kicking HFF. Sheed is similar.

We desperately need some dynamic onballers. If Yeo was fit we would have won that.

Bullshit, I predict the melt will motor along for most of the season.

Can’t be arsed with negatives, they’ll get covered off, suffice to say that we went to sleep from halfway through the 1st to halfway through the 3rd when a lack of intent cost us

• Ginbey was going as strong at the end as he was at the start. Will be better for the experience
• Long just needs time on the ground and in the gym. Knows where to be but needs to learn how to cope with the pace of the game and build strength. I think he’s going to be a star
• Chesser got through the game uninjured. Needs to be persisted with despite a quiet game
• Jones continues to evolve into something quite handy
• Allen needed to blow off some rust and will only get better
• Once we got some supply I50, Ryan looked dangerous
• Shuey and to a lesser extent Sheed helped spark the revival
• Gaff wasn’t terrible and had some good moments. He also some bad ones
• Hunt will be valuable once he settles in
• We looked dangerous when we moved the ball fast and the intent to do do was there even if we came unstuck at times

On the evidence of that game it’s going to be a hard year.
I don't like to hate on players, but thought Gaff had some poor moments where I expected more from someone of his so called stature.
First he handball received and ran into the centre square uncontested. Oscar was out the back on Bonar and Gaff dropped the ball 10m short of Bonar. Oscar had to double back to contain Bonar from quickly rebounding. Expected kick to advantage of Oscar as he had Bonar done out the back and he should been having a shot on goal.
Second he was closing in on goal 35m out straight in front and missed. Really needs to kick that.

Still playing catchup and yet to watch the presser.

I don't suppose a reporter was brave enough to go..

"So Adam, backing on from the worst season your club has ever had in its history, you've just lost your 9th game in a row to the wooden spoon team from last year with a new coach/game plan and much younger list profile than yours...

I'm fact you had 10 premiership players, and 6 All Australians in your side today... so where does this leave you and this club exactly?"

:thumbsu:
Ryan dragging us back into it and the little leg wobble
Long and Gibney

Playing catch up again, and just missing out

:devilv1:

Missing gettable goals when it really mattered. So dissapointing.
Unlucky Wosh

I liked how Ginbey and Hunt, looked to go forward without question, you could tell they are new to ‘our system’, I hope we don’t crush that out of them.

Old man Shuey still having a crack and taking the game on.

Hurn had a couple of moments, but still showed reliable dependability, certainly looking like he is worthy of playing on this year.

big negative - mason cox is a better ruckman, than any player our club could put on the field today :-(

Yikes, sounds bad when you say it like that
