Autopsy Round 1, 2023: Positives and Negatives vs North Melbourne

I don't like to hate on players, but thought Gaff had some poor moments where I expected more from someone of his so called stature.
First he handball received and ran into the centre square uncontested. Oscar was out the back on Bonar and Gaff dropped the ball 10m short of Bonar. Oscar had to double back to contain Bonar from quickly rebounding. Expected kick to advantage of Oscar as he had Bonar done out the back and he should been having a shot on goal.
Second he was closing in on goal 35m out straight in front and missed. Really needs to kick that.

He was far from perfect but he exceeded my admittedly low expectations of him prior to this match.

The worry with that kick to Allen was I think it was less a skill error and more a matter of him not having the penetration to kick it as far as he needed to

The good.

Ginbey
Long
Our captain
2024 welcome to the west Harley Reed.

The bad
Gaff won't retire
Cole, sheed had a year to recover and get primed, what happened.
Xon is not up to it.
Witherden......
Hurn still getting 25 touches BC our mids can't win a clearance and stop oppo I50.
Game plan

Better see Hough, Culley, bazzo, Burgeil regularly in come weeks.

Oh dear god, I just remembered the Allen walking into an open goal with Darling and missing from 2m out.

"Haha wowee, I hope that doesn't cost us the game..."

💀

Would've gone 4 goals up from memory and taken all the momentum with us.
Whenever I do some dumb shit in ammos I’ll remember that moment and that so called professional footballers still hit us with that absolute trash

Really want us to push Jones back to HB to create from there. Witho can go back to the magoos. One of the better plays was when he was further up the ground and delivering into 50. When our mids got pantsed, we had no creativity to get it out of the backline. Compare that to North where Sheez played that qb role that Daicos does and was super effective.

Really happy with all the debutants, hope to see more for the rest of the year.

Williams drives me nuts because he is athletic and he does occasionally show promise.

But I cannot understand how he cannot learn or be taught to mark the footy with both hands.

I think everyone wants to see something there, but he's not a smart footballer and if he can't fix something as simple as that, I can't see him getting any smarter.

Yeah, it was right in front of where I was and he just looked like he rushed a bit and didn't get any pentatration at all.

Fought back well ... but we never should have been behind as much as we were. Our passenger mentality on display ... our most experienced showing the young blokes how its done. Disgraceful 2nd qtr.

I'd be able to handle a season of bottom 4 if we actually blood the young guys instead of persisting with mediocre performance by experienced blokes. No more tickets in the bank, Simmo. Please.

IN: Culley, Hough, Hewett
OUT: Jamieson, Witherden, XON

I'd rather one part-time ruck liability instead of 2 part-time ruck liabilities. Get Barnett in for some time as soon as he's ready ... could be like English in a few yrs if given a shot.

Obviously Sheezel is a far better player than Williams, I think currently Williams is a below average ruck.

He’s just extremely over hated on here, hence the defence.
Ok then we take aim at coaching and management for persisting with him... He's being called out as a spud, not hated, just that he's a spud...

1. Poor team effort. Lack leadership. The effort should not be just from the captain but from all players.
2. Clarkson knows our weakness better than the WCE
3. North Melbourne did not play well but we were even worst.
4. The same old problem. Take it too easy in the first half. Little pressure applied on opposition ball carriers from our midfield(especially on the first half). Rely too much on the defenders to intercept.

The result was actually much better than I had feared.

North did what every opponent does against the club, getting the extra onto the ball and dominated around the contests.

The match then continued on a 2022 trajectory until Jamieson was pulled early for Petruccelle.

The resultant improved mobility helped to even up the numbers in the middle and generate far more forward pressure, which resulted in a 34 point deficit on the way to another blowout being turned around into a competitive finish, with West Coast kicking 7 of the last 9 goals.

Main takeaways from a match between two teams likely to finish bottom four?

Ginbey: looking better and better with every match. The potential ceiling on him just keeps raising. Arguably now only second to Yeo at the club now for stoppage impact. 18% of the team's total tackle count was him on debut. Get him and Culley together and unleash carnage.

Chesser: Needs matches. Looked a long way off the pace today. Even if it is your debut, 5 disposals on the wing from 69% time on ground is a disappointing outing. Would be the worst thing for his development to drop him right now, so hopefully we see improvement next week. May be better for him to be placed behind the ball whilst he gets up to speed.

The other mids: Turned up late and fumbled their way through things. Destroyed early against uneven numbers, the experienced group finished strongly as the match drew to a close.

Ryan: Still chose when to go at times but was by far the team's best attacking option and was the one who catalysed the comeback to reignite the contest.

Long: Looked very clean; took a while to adapt to the pace of the game but improved the longer he was out there.

The other forwards: Allen contested well on his return, albeit with a lot of rust as could be expected. Darling looked underdone. Both appeared to tire significantly towards the end. Small forwards each did some nice things without making a significant impact, however they are also guilty for letting Sheezel free to gather 34 disposals on debut behind the ball.

Hunt: Showed a willingness to use his pace to take the game on that was lacking elsewhere down back. Just 12 disposals however for 231 metres gained underscores that his attacking traits were underutilised.

Barrass, McGovern & Hurn: the defensive trio saved the club from embarrassment today. 29 intercepts between the three of them says it all. Without them, the dam wall would have easily burst during the 30 minute period of the second and third quarters when the team was under siege.

The other defenders: are a big problem. Defensively poor in the air and lacking in pace. Beaten by opposing forwards and failed to provide decisive contributions offensively. Urgent renewal is required. Hough, Chesser and Petruccelle into defence now.

The rucks: delist both. Just hapless. Against zero opposition they failed to provide stoppage superiority to the midfield, did nothing to provide a marking threat in attack against smaller defenders and allowed their counterparts to run off and setup opposing possession chains time after time. Both extraordinarily poor performances. A pair of albatrosses.

The resting ruck up forward needs to be put to rest once and for all. They offer nothing, and the amount of forward pressure created by the team drops off a cliff every time one is out there. The turning point in the game came once this role was jettisoned.

A few positives, mired by a host of negatives. The team is in dire need of pace, particularly in the defensive half of the ground.

9 losses in a row equals the clubs worst ever record. 2 wins from the last 27 matches makes it only too apparent where things are at.

cole jumping on top of Ginbeys back/head to celebrate Longs goal seemed like one of the dumbest things I’ve ever seen. Like actually turn around and tell him to ****off worthy.

Additionally I fail to see the logic in renewing the contract of a ruckman based on a strong preseason as opposed to seeing a few games of the season proper before making that choice.

I'm still backing Bailey every week and twice on Sunday over Jamieson.

Both are bad and not AFL standard, but our million dollar superstar is once again watching from the sidelines, so you work with what you've got.
I actually see more in Jamo than Bailey in terms of footy nous. The problem(s) are Jamo should be developing in the WAFL and is not ready for AFL. He seems a couple of years away but I acknowledge he may never get there. He was so undeveloped when drafted so was always going to take time. Not sure the end result will be worth the wait though. Time will tell.

Bailey on the other hand is an athletic beast for his size, was a big unit when drafted (although seems to be getting scrawnier) and should be showing more. But he is so poor body on body in any contest and just makes bad mistakes. His forward craft is also poor at this stage. That said, he played a couple of very good games last year so can do it.

I dunno, neither are ready to lead a ruck and I doubt NN has more than 10 to 15 games left in him.

Hope I am wrong on most of the above and it all comes good soon but I think we will need a mature ruck recruit for next year if we can find one. But having contracted NN and Jamo etc, not sure how many we can carry on our list. It’s a mess.

Good:
  • Ginbey and Long
  • Look fitter
  • Allen’s return

Bad:
  • costly turnovers
  • ruck situation - NicNat can’t get on the park, Williams has not developed and Jamieson is not ready.

Ugly:
- Kelly’s fumbling - shocking this game, used to be so clean at Geelong.

Terribly biased commentary again, the way they tried to analyse the Shuey free kick, as if they were hoping there was a camera on the grassy knoll, that showed somehing completely different to the obvious free kick every other camera showed.

meanwhile many questionable frees to north that went unmentioned without any replays.
Regardless of the commentary shuey has manufactured that free kick dozens of times so its fair enough to question it

How did we end up with Sheed "contesting" 2 CBD? Surely Williams can get himself back on given we had subbed the other guy.
