Again insignificant stupid stat
It can be used poorly like all stats, but it has its place. You use it to assess how players are breaking free of stoppages and gaining territory (obviously). Looking at Crouch and saying 'he had 37 disposals and only got X meters gained so he had a bad game' is dumb but it doesn't mean the stat is useless.

Players who deserve to be dropped (no particular order):
Berry
Smith
Pedlar
Jones
Keays
Murphy

We can't drop them all. So some will survive.

Players I want to be included:
Nankervis
Curtin
Dowling

My biggest concern is Dawson. Go back to when he started with us and he would glide across the ground. His kicking was precise. Now he looks heavy and tired in the legs. I suspect the bash and crash of the midfield isn't in his best interests long term. I think we should go back a little and have him across half back/wing with short bursts in the midfield. That way we can use him like we did in early days - getting the ball in his hands as much as possible. Using him as the overlap runner etc... while still running him through the midfield where required. It's best for him and us in the long term.

So my changes and team line up.

OUT:
Berry
Smith
Pedlar (You can't burn players with selfishness like he did and not have consequences)

IN:
Dowling
Nankervis
Curtin

TEAM:
MM Butts Worrell
Dawson Keane Milera
Nank Crouch Jones
Rankine Walker Keays
Burgess Fog Rachele

1R: ROB Laird Soligo
INT: Dowling Murphy Curtin Hinge
  • Curtin rotates through with Milera, Dawson and Worrell
  • Hinge rotates wing with Nank and Jones, as well as defensive cover if needed
  • Dowling rotates midfield and forward with Rankine, Soligo and the odd burst from Rachele
  • Keays never plays on the wing again. Never. He's too dumb.
  • Dawson plays 50% half back, 30% midfield, 15% wing and 5% bench.
  • Soligo takes the majority of the Dawson midfield minutes. We simply have to start developing him as a mid. Not wing. Not half forward. He's a gun midfielder. Time to put him there.
  • Laird to be put on the same notice Crouch was. Use the ball or get dropped. 30 disposals mean nothing if you can't use the ball for our benefit.

Yeh that’s why I’m not a fan they can be used which better suits you,

Surely we could "manage" Smith if we don't want to embarrass him with the "omitted" tag, even though he deserves it

He's 32, it's easy to justify "management"
How about we stop being pathetic and pick players based on form? It's a professional sport, if you aren't playing well enough you get dropped. End of story. Deal with it. It doesn't matter who you are.

I don''t think the AFL coaches would agree with that personally, players like Matt Crouch's prime job is to get the ball out to the team's best users like Dawson. the 2023 version of Dawson that said. Strange how the focus hasn't yet come onto Dawson's 2024 form thus far.
It has from a few posters but not the club or media.

But if he hball s backwards or side ways to someone that puts it too advantage it’s a negative gain and nuffies on here that go on stats blow up oh look at his metres gained. Yes the coaches have better understanding. If a bloke is winning the ball 37 times how many times did he turn it over. It just gives the Crouch bashers ammunition without any understanding or eye for the game
Do you honestly listen to them? If the stats don’t add up the way they want they generally twist or ‘omit’ certain areas to make it look like they’re clever.

A lot of people think Smith is low on confidence and that's why he should be dropped. It's not that at all. The game has gone past him, he is slower and cant get space, pretty much all hiss possessions are either kick outs where he just kicks as far as he can to a contest, or its a hack kick under pressure because he lacks the speed and/or awareness to get in space. Plus he plays in defence but is ordinary at defending (and always has been), apart from running across as a third man and spoiling 2-3 times a game. I just can't see any benefit in giving him more games, he should be depth only for the rest of the year.

People are also arguing the merits of Laird & Crouch in the midfield, but it is Berry's additional presence that has really unbalanced the midfield. Can only play 2 of these 3, I'd choose Crouch and Laird as these 2 at least get the ball, and Berry amazingly is the worst kick of the 3.

Smith doesn't need time in the SANFL he needs to be dropped permanently and retire end of season. He has been finished for a while.
Offer him and Sloane a last hurrah match , on the condition that play SANFL through to whatever thr last final match is.

They might even like the chance to win a flag

If Brodie Smith looks the coach in the eye and tells Nicks he truly believe his form warrants selection he's either a liar or completely deluded. Neither option bodes well for the club and if Nicks accepts it it's sending the old "seniority rules" shit back up.

If anyone is in ANY doubt about Brodie Smith, they need to watch this bit of the highhlights.

Regulation ground ball that he should have easily picked up and sent us forward, but COMPLETELY SQUIBS the contest and Geelong get it and goal. Look at the score, crucial time of the game and we literally shat the bed.

Absolutely woeful effort from a 'senior leader' and should be dropped on that alone.

Agreed, rivals that banana he sent to row Z as his worst moment in the game.

****ing hell he was woeful. I've always admired his work and commitment but he needs to be put out to pasture.

Watching it live, he was running into a 3 on 1 situation. It looked like he thought he would shield the ball from the first opponent with his back, then he was intending on picking the ball up and backstepping out of trouble. Ambitious to say the least.
Instead he turned his back, overran the ball, missed it completely, went to ground and let the 3 opponents do as they liked. It was as bad as it looked.
He had to either sink the boot into it off the ground and clear the area, or pick it up and get tackled, hopefully ensuring a ball up.

It's sad, because he has been an outstanding player, but he's cooked. I'm sure he's had some good games since, but it feels like he hasn't been the same since he was concussed going for that mark.
