AFL Toast Win Against Saints

Went to an Arsenal match at Emirates in 2022. Everyone, including the sizeable visiting team's fans (Eindhoven), knew when and how to voice their support for the respective teams. Same with the Barmy Army at the cricket. We just don't have the same sporting culture. Theirs is better.
How hard can it be to occasionally get an “Essendon clap clap clap” thing going?

You’d love to do better than that but baby steps.

Went down to ground level for the last quarter, and there was one attempt to get a chant going but it didn't come from the cheer squad.
How do you know it didn’t come from the cheer squad? There was no contrasting evidence to suggest that they were anywhere else in the stadium.

But there’s no unified support. It gets vocally loud and random if it’s close but otherwise it is generally insipid. I genuinely didn’t notice our cheer squad. Couldn’t find them at all. Surely someone is leading that section. Maybe they should study the 12th man mentality of the Kop at Anfield. They are literally an extra player and the almost spiritual connection with singing You’ll Never Walk Alone and creating songs for each of their key players is spine-tingling stuff.
The thing that gets me is when they make all this noise, heaps of lights, music and atmosphere leading up to the first bounce, and then it's just silence as the game starts.

Lame

We are not big on being involved in chants or songs during the game but when there is 40k at Marvel the noise for holding the ball or an exciting bit of play is right up there .
I am not one for chants or singing anyway. Too busy looking at how they are set up.

I dont know about it being a better sporting culture, maybe just different.
Definatly see more females, more families watching AFL in the stands in Australia.

Seen football at it's worst in the UK which I can say is no where near as bad here. We don't have numours pubs around Melbourne that wont show matches because of hooligan violence. Nor the level of agreesive booze/drug behaviour in and around the stands. Has cleaned up a bit though.
In saying all of that, the chants and comradery that is in those far flung stands is second to none.

That’s a good point. The family friendly culture of Aussie Rules has always been much better.

Being able to attend your spiritual home at places like Anfield makes a difference to the atmosphere too. There’s a sort of pilgrimage to the ground, traditional pre-game meeting spots, sitting in the Kop. Stuff like that. Docklands is a sterile arena in terms of creating a home. It has to be a bit forced to try to create a home fortress and hence all the pre-game spectacle that is generally a let-down.

But our lack of any unison in support is down to an insipid cheer squad presence too. I mean seriously, where were they?

😂 true but somehow saying that it’s metaphorically an extra player doesn’t seem to emphasise the point as well. Maybe it’s just me seeing that extra player roaming the field…

I reckon the Essendon crowds are still a sleeping giant.
We have been put to bed over years of incompetence. It will take time and consistent effort (and more time) to rouse.
Remember what Terry Wallace said in the 1984 GF doco where the crowd was deafening as the Bombers surged in that final quarter.
I loved that.

I think we are too scared to go big now because the whole thing is likely to come apart at the seams, because Essendon.

Agree, reckon there's a certain level of apathy in the supporter base due to years of mediocrity.

If we start to show some consistent good form, the crowds and the passion will skyrocket. Can easily see Essendon surpassing the 100k member tally, we've hit ~ 86k whilst being pretty poor last year.

I don’t get to many games as I don’t live in Melb

But when I go I’m not looking for a chant, a Mexican wave or songs. I just want the crowd to pay attention, scream ball insanely loud at every opportunity, go nuts for goals, smothers, good stuff.. and boo some villains (and maybe the umps)

Don’t reckon we need to imitate UK football culture, just need to yell loud and often.

yep. The word now gets used to mean literally the opposite to what it actually means and apparently that's ok

You know I don’t remember ever doing this before and I think maybe it’s seeped into my subconscious vernacular. Now I feel like a doofus for doing it. Thanks a lot Sir Lance… a lot…

AFL is a high anxiety game. so generally you'll get that
Looked a quietish crowd for a sat Marvel game with us, but likely the weekend had something to do with that.
