That's what I am still trying to get my head around...

For a Thursday night game at AO in front of a National audience, we replace two injured, proven goal kickers with...

Basically nothing that will ever look like kicking a goal.

Really? Our club looks about as positive as a Lemming approaching the cliff.

Who would come in as goal kickers at the moment? Probably T Murray - anyone else?

I think Cook has played more wing than that. I think he's had whole games where he mainly played on the wing, for example against Carlton.

In recent weeks he's lined up on the wing at fewer centre bounces and been more of a forward line player, particularly since the North Melbourne game.

So we have 2 forwards out and bring in another defender and a midget 😞. Our defence is stacked we must be terrified about their forward line 🙄

How dare you say that about our next premiership coach!

Is that information available anywhere?
It’s pretty obvious if you go to home games and watch the other matches on tellie.

He’s the trick. When the ball is bounced in the centre, check who is standing on the wing. Cooky was moved to the wing against Collingwood when Sholl was subbed out. Like all forwards he spends time in the D50. For substantial periods last week we had 18 players in the defensive half of the ground.

Hamill should have come in for Smith and Curtin instead of McHenry, with Murphy as sub. Then I would’ve been happy.

I wonder if the Cook injury changed things with Smith, because the rumour was strong on that (as if people think he stayed in because he maybe wasn’t happy with being omitted, I mean lol). Either he was never an out and the rumour was bs, or the Cook injury changed things.
Yeah I wonder if this rumour came from the same people that said Danger was going to re sign with us. I mean holy crap everyone knows someone who knows someone who apparently knows “someone”

That's where you just drive yourself crazy thinking who? You just know we're going to park Dawson there for way too much time during the game because he's basically injured. To achieve, what?

Even though he's out of form, if he's fit (which I seriously doubt) then Pedlar would be worth another go. Just rotate between him, Rachelle and Shoenberg between the midfield and forward line, making sure there are at least two of them on the field at all times. See what the kids have got, because they genuinely do have foot and hand skills.

We already know that Murphy and McHenry couldn't hit the side of a barn when it counts. Keays is selfish, erratic (and purely one sided) and gets the majority of his goals via the Joe the Goose method that Jenkins did (and got a lot of grief here during his latter years for).

If there was any seriousness in the era under Nicks being a genuine rebuild, it would have been investing in youth that has actual foot and hand skills, natural awareness that you cannot teach, and then then polish the rest. This has been a total grind of relying on veterans, high priced recruits from other teams, and try hards with skills that are not up to AFL level. Rinse and repeat.

I am happy to have a wager. When I watch the replay I write down who is in the centre square and who is on the wing at each centre bounce. I will check my stats for the Carlton match but he plays as a deep forward most of the time. It is no coincidence that most of his goals are either Joe the Gooses or marks within 20 metres of the goal. Against the Pear, when Cooky had one touch after the 2 minute mark of the second quarter I thought he must have been lurking in the casino.

I haven't done that level of research, I've just noticed Cook and his pink boots at more centre bounces than one quarter for the whole year. Carlton is the one where I'm fairly confident it was a decent chunk of the game.

No argument about the last block of games as I think after North Melbourne he has been forward the vast majority of the time. Sholl, Nank and Jones all being in the team at the same time is a factor here as well obviously.

If you do have data about how many centre bounces Cook has lined up on the wing I'd be interested in seeing it.

He started on the wing against Melbourne from memory, but then moved forward.

I don’t have a subscription to CD so the only info is CBAs which is the 4 players inside the centre square.

I am interested in the running patterns of our wingmen. My impression is that our wingmen are more defence oriented than some other teams. Also our high half forwards are really high and we usually send one of them (e.g. Murphy) to stoppages between the D50 and F50. This results in our deep forwards/forward pockets also playing further up the ground.

Ugly - this:

This kind of behaviour cannot continue.

You guys are going on like Cook is somehow an issue - for the handful of games that he has played.

Have a good look at this video from last week - this is one of our Leadership group, a 250 game veteran who somehow retained his spot for tomorrow night. That was just a taste of the crap that has been dished up all season.

Not to mention another veteran who was just as pathetic last week in the midfield, got moved to defense out of desperation, and yet and is back out there again tomorrow. Unbelievable.

So yeah, pick on the kid who has never really been given a proper go.

I think ROB is a better ruckman than Strachan which is really saying something. I don't rate Strachen as an AFL player but happy for him to have a run of games given how poor ROB has been.
ROB can’t kick or mark, unfortunately they are prerequisites for playing AFL.
He also has no ruck craft, just bash and crash.
Bout time the club realised they won’t be getting anywhere until this unco is out of our team.

Checked the first quarter against Melbourne. Cook started on the bench and played in the forward pocket. His first possession was on the wing after Brodie Smith intercepted the ball and hit him on the chest (agh the good old days). He wasn’t on the wing for the first 4 centre bounces (he was in the goal square when Rankine snapped our first goal) but did move onto the wing at the 18 minute mark when our wingmen was given a rest. He picked up a couple of quick possessions but finished the match with 8 disposals so I doubt he spent a lot of time on the wing that match.

I will check the Carlton game later.

The discussion was not about pouring shit on Brayden but discussing what position he has played in the AFL this year.

I think it’s diabolical Rach is left to face the media about his form, when ROB and Smith have been consistently worse. As part of the 8 man leadership team you’d think they’d step forward and take the heat off a 20 yr old kid finding his way, but no happy to leave the heat to the kid. Failure on and off the field these two.

All your Rain Man-esque handwritten notes aside, Cook is a low possession, high impact player.

Rather 9 of his touches than 20 of Keays. He is growing in confidence, when he has the ball you're excited rather than anxious.

He is the antithesis of McHenry, Keays, Murphy and the slew of other high effort, low ability battlers that Nicks favours.

Wouldn't be knocking his "Joe the Goose" goals either. It shows he is working hard off the ball to get there, which given one of his main knocks was work rate, is a good thing.

Cook is a footballer, we should try playing more like him.

Let’s follow the bouncing ball……….

The 9 disposals per game was an indication that Brayden is not playing on the wing. No AFL team would select a wingman who has averaged 9 disposals a week over 9 matches.

I did not criticise his JtG goals, I would be happy if we kicked 10 JtGs a week. My point was that a wingman will occasionally kick JtGs but more than half of Brayden’s o11 goals have been kicked from 0-20 metres out from goal. Once again an indication that he been playing mainly as a deep forward.

I’m not sure I’m too bothered about the where he’s been playing argument - either way.

I would note the official Telstra heat maps suggest he’s been playing a fair amount of wing though
