We just signed on a 30 year old on a 4 year contract that has been playing with an injured knee, and has had two sequential concussions that have put him out for multiple weeks.. we have not learnt our lesson

He is 27.

Regarding Tommy, not sure if already mentioned, we could stick to the 3 year contract and promise him a cushy job for lyfe at HQ post retirement to make up for it.

Meanwhile the new list manager will be exploring trade value, or he isn't doing his job.

If there is a 5 year deal from another club, and we get some good draft capital in return, we need to take it IMHO.

Does seem like classic West Coast that they had a handshake agreement to increase his wage so he stays and then when they actually did it, they only increased it by a tiny amount.

How is this "classic West Coast?

It is the first time aive heard of the club doing anything close to this.

What other examples do you have where this has occurred?

A cushy job post retirement doesnt pay $700k per annum in the extra two years.

In fairness to Barrass, he should be charging the club overtime with the amount of work he has to put in every week covering our deplorable midfield and team structure.

Absolutely nothing against him if he gets the good long-term deal elsewhere.

My god we will be awful if he departs.

Is it realistic that the club brings back isiah winder he has been so good in the wafl. Hopefully we bring him back.

The article is vague about the handshake deal, Eagles came back with an offer, Barrass didn't like it. It's not reneging. Maybe the Eagles offered 75-100k extra a year, maybe he wanted or was expecting double that.

He has 3 years left on his deal and it's decent money, the club didn't have to do anything.

Players often take a little unders for an extra year too.

He signed on in December 2021 for 5 more years, having already been signed until the end of '22. At that point we weren't even convinced we were heading for an almighty fall.

TB on his contract extension at the time: "It feels great having some security behind me and knowing that I can focus on building this list going forward, and keeping the environment that's really healthy for improvement".

So at 26 years of age he locked himself into 6 more total years of footy which sees him out of contract on his 32nd birthday. He admitted prioritising security, and openly states the club provides him with the best environment to get better every day.

Quite rightly then he should have projected he was not at the peak of his powers and could back end his deal with a higher pay bracket, or take a short contract and continue to ply his craft for a big pay day just around the corner. He chose to accept the money, commit his full future to the club and focus on other things.

It seems a bit disingenuous now to request more money AND the security of the long term deal. He hasn't helped his cause stating he struggles to get moving each day with his back injuries. I can understand the club being gun-shy about revisiting his contract given the sheer volume of players who have rapidly fallen off a cliff around the age of 30. That might be a risk for another club that can offer Tom more years with far less travel burden, but we can't do that.

Wont we get an answer about priorty picks before trade period exists?

This is the AFL we’re talking about. They’ll probably make the decision halfway through trade period and then tell us the picks have to be traded by the end of the week.

The front loading is likely why barrass wants to renegotiate. He ate his cake and now wants another cake. He needs to be traded out.
You mean the brad hill technique.

Get a massive front loaded contract, then pretend there is issues with the club after you have taken the big chunk for a new contract at another club

Is that classic West Coast? I would have thought if anything we have handsomely paid and been incredibly loyal, to a fault even.

Gee whiz, I was making a gag about the "West Coast are tightarses when it comes to money" stereotype.

Ya'll gotta unwind yourselves sometimes

Nailed it.

Find this whole conversation dumb in the sense of, why the **** are we giving up an asset to get multiple early picks

This is what asking for compensation is meant to achieve...

Why would the AFL support us becoming a worse team in order to achieve a result they can create themselves. Instead of trading away assets to get early picks, ask the AFL to give it to us for free and watch them do it.
This ^
Trading out guys like barrass and Ryan and replacing them with Hedwards and brockman is going to make us worse in the short term .

It would be in the AFLs interest to give us priority picks to keep our senior players .
