Acres was meant to be on 500k next year

FMD

This is why I don't mind overpaying imports like Hanneberry and Hill. Our absolutely average plodders have been getting overpaid to do and achieve not much. No wonder we've failed to take the next step when we've essentially rewarded players for being mediocre

Newnes would've been on a packet
Acres evidentally has been
As has Bruce
Armo was getting paid alot of money for the last 2.5 seasons for not alot of output
Ditto Steven for 12 months
Dmac getting 3 years was an error, don't even want to know what the $$ figure is. Whatever it's too much

Clear out that needed to happen

Jones vs acres last 5 years. This year acres played solely forward. Jones was getting time in Clark's role. A defensive sweeper with time running though the guts. Last year acres played that role. His stats were better.

I agree with this. They have plenty of similarities in output. Acres' perceived 'versatility' has been to his own detriment really. It's got to the stage though where I don't think he's going to get the chance to play consistent midfield with us. Jones by contrast I think we'll bring in and put the red carpet out for him. Wouldn't surprise me if we see Jones putting out good numbers next year for us and Acres putting in a good season on the wing for Freo.

Basically the only year Jones surpassed Acres was 2019. Acres out performed Jones the last 4.

The big change? Acres played solely forward this year.

I'm not a big fan of acres either. I'm a fan of Jones.

But Jones is not the superior player people think he is. I've watched him closely since he was drafted. The things people find frustrating about Blake are the same things Jones exhibits. You're just looking at a player with forward ability vs a player who is more defensive.
So Jones is improving and able to perform in multiple positions, while Acres has regressed and can only influence games in one position which we have better players performing in?

Jones never played the role Acres has this year. He had significant midfield time. Acres didn't

That's the difference.

I'm sure if acres role never changed from last year his numbers would again be similar to Jones if not better.

But we are going to bring in Jones for more than Acres.

The salary dump also means nothing is we are paying Jones the same if not more.

I don't care much for stats

Truth is, if not for our injuries, Acres wasn't best, 22 this year and probably wouldn't be round 1.

Jones is a walk up start.

Wish Blake the best. Has all the skills to be a very good player but just struggled to put it together consistently.

It's a good sign he wanted to stay as it speaks for the culture of the club imo but ultimately it might be best for both parties if he moves on. He'll help Freo cover the loss of Langdon and we certainly get better as a result

I still think we may have a surprise for all. It doesn't make sense why Acres is being involved when freo had already agreed to the deal. I will not be surprised if whatever we get for Acres goes to another club for that ''6th' player. Bonar/McLean ?

I like McIntosh from Richmond. Got some good campaigner about him and was squeezed out because of their incredible depth.

People don't care for stats when they won't support their argument.

I'm ok with the Jones acquisition. I like him.

My argument here is the value discrepancy between the two. It's massively skewed if the media reports are correct.

Also I think people have unfair expectation on what Jones will produce. I don't think they fully understand what they're getting. I think they think he will be the big inside mid we are missing. Hes never been that for Sydney. He's been the defensive sweeper. He also has issues with decision making and disposal.

Like acres he's never been able to perform as a genuine inside mid.

If he is a salary dump, then we surely have another big fish up our sleeve now. No point him being a salary dump for 2020 season if we dont get anyone in now....

Not necessarily. The club could just to frontload Howard, Hill, Jones etc a bit more aggressively. You can kick the can down the road, fairly easily, with cap space.

I look at Jones for one thing - pace. If we are going to play Carlisle, Howard, Wilke and Battle in the same backline, then you need real pace to add to that. I can see one side of the ground reading Jones/Hill/Butler - that gives us the very potent ability to move the ball very quickly from defence to attack. Acres does not give you pace.

As someone who has just taken up gardening, i can see similarities with developing players.

You plant 3 or 4 seedlings in a punnet together; one takes off like a rocket, two of them are middling and one never sprouts. The next step for the gardener is to pull out the middling plants, so that the strong seedling can get all the nutrients and light without competition, so it has the best possible chance of success. Sometimes choosing the strongest plant isn't always easy, but removing middling seedlings is more important than selecting the strongest.

Look at Marshall this year. He was only able to step up with the opportunity he had. I think the club is taking that to heart.
Are you suggesting we might Roundup a few?

In isolation the Hill trade (if correctly reported) looks overs - rating Acres as a late second pick it's basically 10 + 12 with a third back; so more expensive (just) than say, Shiel. I'm thinking the future third goes to Richmond for Butler

But we did well (I thought) out of Howard + Ryder so if I'm right about Butler; if you consider it's 6 + 58 + Acres + future second for Hill, Howard, Butler and Ryder it looks a whole lot better.

I'm guessing we threw in 58 because all our late picks are being used for upgrades so it's not really relevant where they are.
