Normally after the fact though

Nah, most of the forum favourites and suggestions are before the draft. Even if we'd chased some of the WA guys suggestions we'd have Liam Ryan, McGovern, Menagola and a pile of other top WA talent.

Fan favourites like Tommy Walsh, Tom Ledger,Blake Acres,Tom Simpkin,Tom Curran absolute stars at Sandy so they must come into the side.

People loved them because they were Saints, noon was chasing them before that. All of them were fringe talent. I'm talking top draft picks. Look back at the Petracca v Paddy stuff. It was overwhelmingly on the Petracca side.

He's a solid player but has some very obvious weaknesses, mainly his kicking and decision making. But if in a midfield that doesn't require him to kick he'd go alright.
If we got him it would have to be purely in an extractor role feeding the ball out to our faster mids. If we keep crouch there won't be a need for him.

Sorry to intrude

There's rumour over here that Adelaide have enquired about Dunstan. Not sure how to feel on this because I'm pretty sure a lot of your supporters have wanted him gone for a while now. I am guessing he is not highly rated here.

He was a terrible user of the footy who had no tank and started to get a bit of whipping boy status mores when he wasn't in the side funny enough. He was a favourite for a long time, he's a really good character and a heart and soul type.

He's fixed both his disposal and time on ground since coming back in this year and is second in coaches votes at the Saints despite only playing about 11 games. He's probably around Brad Crouch level now and would be a great pick up for another club that needs an inside extractor. Not sure that's a Crows priority though. He could be a bit of a Greenwood or Jarred Lyons type that blossoms and embarrasses us I think.

I’m not as sold on bing as some and wouldn’t entertain getting into a bidding war.

We have a salary cap and you can only spread the money so far, it’s a midfielders game so tying up a disproportionate amount in the forward line doesn’t make any sense to me. I watched locket and Loewe dominate and it simply wasn’t enough. So Ming and bing would need to be just about the best combination ever to take us any further imo.

It would have been different if we’d drafted both but sadly it didn’t happen.

Yeah would only be a need if Crouch leaves. Could see him blossoming with a fresh start for sure.

I find the whole "we must bring Ben to StKilda " thing to be an "Emotional Bulldust reaction". How do you know what he would cost? If Brad Hill was worth close to that, they have a good argument that King is worth a lot more, then there will be contract cost.
Okay. We will just have to wait and see how it plays out.

If no-one leaves ( unlikely i know ).

And we have Hunter, Roberton, Frawley, Carlisle , McKernan all off the list .

Our 22 will have :

1 One of Geary, Paton, Connelly
2 Probably Highmore and Howard, with Joyce and Clavarino in the wings.
2 Two of Wilkie and Webster and Coffield.
2 Two of Hill, Coffield, Sinclair, Connelly.
2 Marshall and Ryder.
5 of Steele , Crouch, Dunstan, Hannebery, Clark, Ross , Bytel , Byrnes,
3 of Billings, Hill, McKenzie, Wood.
2 of King, Membrey, Sharman, Battle.
3 of Butler , Higgins, Gresham, Lonie, Kent.

I'm really not seeing any obvious places to trade in new players.
Not without struggling to give games to the kids we have.
Whilst I generally agree with your observation, the fact that we are not playing finals this year, let alone winning premierships, means that I have to disagree with your observation.

My other observation is that , while its not popular to use injury as an excuse , its legitimate, and probably a reason why we didn't play finals this year, remembering that we only missed out by a game.
No-one has depth players as good as their 22. And a positive is that we've found some kids who turned out to be better than our depth players ( who will now be leaving ).

Tim and Gary were suggesting that Collingwood and Essendon could offer him around $1 million pa. That's a crippling cost because his brother would want the same then. I hope Sharman comes on and makes him less of a need.
Tim and Gary also said GC were set to offer Max a monster deal just before he signed with us.
They make stuff up.

I don't think we need to worry about the money aspect.
Bing will get around as much at GC as any Vic club will offer and with Ming locked in at 750k, that's defined the ceiling for wage expectations.
Plus if he's gonna leave he will also have put to bed the idea of playing at a club for extra $$$.
The beauty is that we'd be able to have two million dollar players at 1.5m and their opportunity for earnings outside the cap eill also be maximized.

Really, he'd give up $1 million over 4 years to play with his brother for nostalgia?

$650K after tax, $162.5K per.
And what's he been getting extra at GC $250K PA for 3 years??

I just think if you're 22yo and you've already got 2 million in the bank, you might just want to choose the place that makes you happy knowing full well you're gonna be a rich kent at the end of it no matter what.

We have flipped 3/4 of the list in a 3 year period. I think we probably don't know what we have yet. A bulk of the better talent is between 10 and 75 games so not consistent or fully formed yet. I think we could definitely find a couple of missing pieces and if we lose more experience it's probably critical that we replace some but there is a fair assumption that a lot of pieces are already at the club but need to get games and experience to actually realise potential.

I reckon it's a year we should hold and see where we are at. There is only so much churn that can be done before you are consistently unsettled. We probably have the most ring-ins of any side ever assembled as well I would think.

You can only hope but he was nearly home and the offer of more money kept him there once. Anyway. We might decide he's an unnecessary luxury if Sharman comes on.

They weren't saying it as a stated fact more throwing up hypotheticals and guessing his value.

It was a factor but the age profile is probably more so. We need games into youth and hope that they become consistent high level players. The difference between our best and worst is a chasm. Pretty much like Freo, youth find consistent performance hard to achieve. I also think that from half way the game plan changed to suit the players at hand. Earl on we were trying to play a controlled chip mark game with precision kicking. Second half we were much more run and gun, hard working and doing the spread and press to stop putting pressure on each other.

I'm on two minds with that.
Someone like Bytel , who might get a dozen touches at AFL level, i think benefits from rotating in and out of the VFL/AFL.
The Interrupted VFL season hasn't helped development at all.

I feel very sure that Bing is an anomaly in that it's he's a Want irrespective of Needs.
He's more akin to GAJ being desired at GC for more than the onfield benefits.

Even so, having both Kings in the one side would make us very difficult to stop.

After this trade period we will have potentially another 3 mids wanting a run. The first round pick usually gets a run early and that pure inside role player usually doesn't excel in other spots. ideally you have a bout 8 guys all pushing for 4 spots. Competition for spots makes you a better side. Brisbane have guys like Devin Robertson and Ely Smith as fringe types and they already have a great midfield.

It would definitely make the forward line strong. It comes down to money and trade value though. You don't want to sell your future away for a good story. Carlton did that with Judd.
