Sooo.. can we bite the bullet hear and get him off our books now? Surely we sallow our pride now and move on.

I’d say as “bitter a blow” it is for Hanners, it’s treble that for us.
What a stuff up!

So as a result of that article about Port’s reset in 2018 (not having a top 20 pick in any of the prior five years), and the stavro#4 argument re getting another early draft pick, I actually had a look at what Port did in 2018.

Essentially (as things get complicated):
They traded Polec and Pittard for the pick (eventually #6), they used for Rozee.
They already had the pick (eventually #12), they used for Butters.
They traded Wingard for the pick (eventually #18), they used for Duursma.

That’s some impressive trading.
We might argue about the merits of each trade, but they did move out three of their best 22, and got a couple of really good kids in return.
Either Duursma or Butters would walk into our best 22.
As would Rozee, but he was drafted.
Plus they addressed their list issues.

Then consider what they did in 2019 (with us) ultimately turning #10 and Howard/Ryder into #12 and #18, becoming Bergman and Georgiades.
Georgiades would walk into our team too.
Not sure about Bergman.

I think it‘s entirely plausible that we could match that.
It might not be a North trading to bolster their list, or a Hawthorn trading to extend their window, but there’ll be someone interested in a deal.
It just depends on the offer and for whom.

Or, as Stavro has suggested, we wait and see what free agency offers.

If Band #1 compo does become available it might be as low as #6.
Would we use that, or leverage it like Port into a #10 and #16 for example?

I guess what I am saying is that based on what Port achieved in 2018, there is no reason why we cannot adopt a similar strategy and get a similar outcome.

Ultimately the success of doing so will depend on three factors:

1. The quality and depth of quality in this year’s draft.
2. The List Manager’s ability to negotiate a strong trade result.
3. And the Recruiting Team’s ability to identify and select quality players with the hand they are dealt.

I reckon this year will be a great test to see how well our trade and recruiting team actually perform.

No excuses.

I don't want to trade down and Billings is a mysterious AFL compensation formula. We really need to get some superstars so keep as high as possible in the draft. Surely if we had picks 4 and 5 we would have every chance of nailing a gun and hopefully two of them.

If we get band one.

just take the pick and ours to the draft. There is apparently real quality at the pointy end of this one. Don’t do anything creative. Don’t out smart ourselves. Don’t get over confident thinking some half back will be a gun mid etc.

just best available and one will be a pure mid.

i think we cut the list hard post season. The creativity will be how will build out the rest of the list. But I really dont want to screw around with potential top 5 picks
If we get 2 top 10 picks somehow through band 1 compo then use 1 of those picks on Hobbs. Genuine mid who can go forward. Would be perfect fit for our midfield.

My dream is Sonsie. Don’t care who is the other pick in this scenario.

never heard of a Hobbs either. Do you mean Horne who likely to go to North with the first LIVE pick?

And I have a rising interest in Gibcus. If we parted with battle and that’s a massive if. I’m keen on looking at this kid.

Gibcus looks good and I like the look of him but it's a massive gamble. I can see this like the Rhys Stanley or Mc Evoy trades if we get the wrong. Get it right and it's brilliant, **** it up and it's a nightmare. Backs should be easier to get without high picks too.

Agreed. I’m just desperate for an elite intercept mark across half back.

From former recruitment guy I know , wouldn’t be getting too excited .

His comments were he would have needed to improve significantly to make it were his words.
So why did the Saints pick him?

Not to you specifically but everyone.

If you want to see good trading, just follow how Port ended up with #6, when they started off trading Polec and Pittard for #11.
There’s many a way to get that second top pick, not just band one.
Simply depends on cost.

I take your point about not splitting picks though.

Well, everything else being equal there is a 75% chance of getting one gun.
So you’d hope that we kept them.

I agree. Don't split a top pick this time. Take them to the draft and tale the 2 best mids available.

The injuries would be my concern. We seem to have taken a higher number of injury plagued players and seem to have no luck fixing them. I also prefer a more balanced midfielder and preferable with some speed. A Bailey Smith type would be good.

Also Coffield and Wilkie have both shown they are capable of being good intercept players.

Having a genuine gun key defender is a huge need though and would probably help free these guys up.
Don't think it needs to be a genuine gun.

A mobile competent defender would be enough. I can understand why we shied away from a 4 year contract for Aliir - be he would have been a perfect fit.

Don't like Coffield? I'm flat on him for his output this year but he was dominant last year
I love Coffield.

but I see Coffield as a rebounding intercept player.

I want a legitimate third tall intercept player. Think Sam Fisher. People talk about needing good midfields etc. but have an elite intercept in your back 50 is a non negotiable if your legit about winning a flag.

I'd say we have an above average set of intercept defenders with Coffield, Howard and Wilkie all above average and Long also a good interceptor. To me the one player we lack is a tall big bodied one on one defender for guys like Hawkins or Mc Kay who can get you on the lead and in marking contests.

Schlensog looked like that type and gets pretty solid numbers in the WAFL, had a game where he had 28 disposals and 12 marks in a game this year playing as a full back. He would have been worth a try in the midseason IMO. Perhaps we should have another look late in the national draft if his form continues. Other wise Cody Raak is undersized but meant to be a decent KP back.

You can hide very average KPD behind an elite intercept back 6. The guys we have a decent in 1:1 situations.

but as a collective I think we are very average at intercepting. Rewatch the drawn Granny if you dare - but Sammy Fisher gets something outrageous like 25 disposals andover 10 marks and a bucket load of them are intercepts.

that’s what I desperately want us to find.

Part of that is system though. Richmond all come in to block and cover for each other. We seem to just all be trying to save ourselves.
