It will be interesting to watch how they do it. It looks like a North Melbourne rebuild rather than a top up. They do have a very Saints list with not much top end and they really need to fall over and draft hard at the top end of the draft to bring in their superstar players. If they do what Saints and North did and bring in spuds, it will be a long slow rebuild.

And Mitchell is sure to go as well. Doesn't leave a lot of senior blokes out there. This will either be a master-stroke or be a massive error and send them to the bottom for a number of years.

It's a bit hard to work out what the future planning is. I guess we'll find out next year. I wouldn't be surprised if we step backwards and finish bottom 6 for a few more years while drafting. The hard part will be keeping guys like Steele and Sinclair who probably don't play finals at the Saints in that period so would be seriously considering their future at that point.
I don’t think the club knows what the plan is at the minute

he really want's to leave

Soooo desperate to leave... yet hasn't asked formally to be traded (which would force the club to actually try and make something happen)

Riiiiiight.

Uh Huh Yes GIF

I know that when I'm desperate for something to happen... I also do absolutely nothing within my power to make it happen.

Do we put a $1.2mil x 1 year contract in front of Dunkley and try and take him in the PSD?
Gives us a year to convince him to stay, but if he chooses to go we have the ability to trade him in 12 months time.

It would take a lot more than 1.2mil to put him out of the reach of others in the psd.

Carlton had to pay a squib like jack martin 1mill in his first year to do it.

(Out of a total deal of 3mill across 5 years)

Anything close to 30% of a 5 year deal for dunkley would be massive- way beyond 1.2mil.

We'd probably have to pay him 2mill+ in year 1, not 1.2.

The hawks, norf etc would take him for 1.2 without breaking a sweat.

They also remain hopeful of trading for St Kilda’s Hunter Clark , who Rawlings said was “keen to come” if the Saints have a late change of heart and are willing to part with him.

Would have thought that a List Manager from an opposition club saying that a player was keen to get there pretty much tells you that he does want out.

So if goes after a year we have paid him 1.2
And he becomes our asset to trade, potentially landing us two first round picks.
It’s in line with the Bowes move, except we get a player who’s worth relatively similar to the pay packet and we potentially land two firsts or lock in a gun for 5 years

So taking direction of his career is like his gym work?

I wonder if we have some more mature agers in mind as free agents? Still feels like we are lacking tall depth especially forward.

That was the main area Gags mentioned we needed to address in his pre-trade interview so its a fail if we don't bring in anyone. You can't spin that we are happy with our options if we've already highlighted it as an area of concern.

We still have 5 list spots plus 2 OOC and I'd be surprised if we filled all those spots with draftees so we must have a DFA in the works.

Strategy 1 I would offer Dunkley serious coin right now and get him to either nominate us or knock out all comers in the PSD.

Exactly fits our needs.

Strategy 2 Part 1 Give next year's first and 28 (or our f2rdp) to the Gold Coast for 5. Maybe work a deal with Fiorini if Mitchell goes to Collingwood and add 28.

Take McKenzie and most likely Philipou in the draft.

Strategy 2 Part 2 If HC is desperate to go then take North's next year first round they got from Port. So we keep a frdp next year.

Time to get bold and follow Hawthorn's example.

We get 1 A grade for $$$$ no different to DeGoey strategy.

Or we get 2 first class picks now and get who we want now and get set for the future now not wait for next year.

Prefer to keep HC but if he wants out cash in and get the best we can especially if Dunkley comes on board.

This will send them right to the bottom of the ladder. My guess is they intend to hit the draft hard and hope to replicate the hodge, Franklin, Roughead drafts.

I do think we are playing hard ball here. Big overs or 'no Hunter for you'!
But I cant see them paying a pick 3 price, as you say, there supporters would go insane!
But its dead line day... who knows!!!

Agreed.

This is us posturing to north that he is gettable. But cough up.

Let’s see who blinks.

You see I can get behind being bold, it’s this Clark out an average pick in that drives me crazy. I can’t see much of it happening but at least have a plan and make a play. The Dunkley trade is ugly now so I’m not sure how that plays out. GC aren’t that interested in getting into next years as they have academy kids. Hunter Clark is a wash without the others but at least it’s the sort of plan that moves the needle imo.

This is brilliant.

Yes, can you email the club, no way any of our mugs are clever enough to consider this.

Either way we get something good next year...
Hunter stays - he would have to improve on last year (with so much injury how could he not)
Hunter gos - we get a talented high pick that could get involved in the seniors early.

C'mon north, how much do you want Hunter????

You would like to think we can’t lose.

But, it’s us and all we are known for is losing 😂

If we are only signing a fringe player because we like them, why would you expect to get anything for them in a trade? Let alone get something good enough back to improve the team.

Geary getting 1 year on minimum wage didn't stop us from getting anyone last year. We brought in 6 draftees plus signed 2 players during the SPP period. We didn't miss out on bringing in any development options.

Butler was dropped during the season. He also didn't get a contract because of 1 good game. It was announced after his 4 goal haul against West Coast but contracts aren't negotiated, signed and announced within a 12 hour period post game. He got another 2 years because whether you want to accept it or not, he is a good small forward who excels at applying pressure and is in our best 22. Ratts also got an extension because he warranted one. Again, it was announced post the Carlton win but wasn't handed to him because of it.
Dont agree on Ratts. From all accounts we gave him the extension based on the first 8-10 rounds but you don’t win shit in July.

Should have waited until the end of the season and saw what he actually achieved (nothing by the way, he achieved nothing).

As it is the early extension worked out well because of the absolute shit show of coaching merry go round and hawks investigation but it was pure dumb luck we missed out on that.

Well we can’t blink because it will mean we’ve given Clark away. It’s either win big or loose badly Imo.

I‘d have gone hard to get meek, traded Marshall to gws for callaghan and a first rounder, that first lets say 15 with Clark to north for pick 3. That gives us 3 and 9 to hit the draft with, take 2 mids. Anyway way that’s not happening so we’re left to see if we have anything from left field and of course Clark potentially, Imo doubt we do anything.
