Just because it was poorly executed doesn't necessarily mean it was the wrong strategy

A good recruiter and a bit of luck could have given us:
Bont, Merrett and Lobb instead of Billings, Dunstan and Acres.

The strategy was there, but we pushed out Dal Santo and McEvoy to do it.
Dal Santo could have played competitively until he was 35 IMO.
McEvoy would have avoided the whole Billy Longer saga.

Kind of what happens when dumb people try to be clever.

Round 1 team
FB. Wilkey - dougal - coff

Hb. Battle - cordy - patton

C. Hill- steele -nwm

Hf. McKenzie - king -wood

I think billings will be fighting for woods spot
Higgins is lucky to push Owens out

The weirdest part about the Pelchen era was the 2012 draft where we traded our two first round picks for Tom Lee and Hickey

In general though I think the 3 top 20 strategy was sound, we just fcuked the picks up. Melbourne did something similar 2013-2015 but they nailed enough picks to get their core going, then added guys like May and Lever later on. That's after they already fcuked up their earlier rebuild from 08-11 of course.

I don’t know what you think Cordy is but he’s no more useful that anything we have if Howard goes down. You’d be better to play Hayes, at least he has bulk.
Playing Hayes in defence would be robbing Peter to pay Paul

We brought him in as a key forward who can pinch hit in the ruck and we have a gaping hole there

That suggestion sounds a lot worse than playing Cordy

A bit different considering Young had only played 24 games in his career before Carlton picked him up. Clearly he was happy still fighting for a spot. Cordy on the other hand has played 117 including 14 this year and a final, I agree with those who said he's probably been promised a very good shot at playing lots of games rather than just a depth spot.
Doubt anyone has been promised a game

Man our supporter base has such low standards. Cordy signs on and there's literally 20 pages in this thread since yesterday evening.
Yeah there should be more in depth discussion about what happened 8 years ago rather comments about signing a bloke less than 24 hours ago.

Walsh is on SEN at the moment, thinks St Kilda is seen as irrelevant and wants to turn that around in a nutshell. Said he’s one of he sees an issue to call it out not walk past it.
he can start with the list manager and recruitment team and then start asking hard questions of the coaching and fitness.

Feel bad for Cordy. Social media is absolute filth these days, he can't even check his new clubs Instagram announcement without seeing every single comment complaining or saying something horrible about the guy. No good

Pretty piss poor, you'd hope most players are savvy enough to just stay off it by now.

I understand we want mids.

But **** me Nick Haynes would be a dream across half back as an intercept mark.

Now that he’s signed with us Supporters should back him in. Have chatted to my bulldogs mates and he’s a serviceable back with a lot of heart. Could be a Tom Campbell/wood type pickup.

No we didn't.

We downgraded them.
Nathan Wright and Spencer White were taken with returned picks.

Hickey wasn't a bad result really. We had old players retiring and leaving the club faster than we could replace them.

Pick 12 Jaksh. - No thanks. ( our pick traded for Hickey ).
Pick 13 Jesse Lonerghan - No thanks. ( Our pick traded for Lee ).
Pick 14 Aiden Corr . Meh.
Pick 15 Taylor Garner. No
Pick 16 Thurlow . Meh
Pick 17 Josh Simpson. No
Pick 18 Brody Grundy : The only player we missed out on in this draft , and face it we wouldn't have picked him anyway.
Pick 19 Ben Kennedy : No.
Pick 20 Tim Broomhead : No
Pick 21 Nathan Hrovat : No
Pick 22 Dean Towers. No
Pick 23 Marco Papparone No
24 Nathan Wright. No worse than any of the others above, apart from Grundy.
25 Spencer White. Worth a shot.

James Stewart taken pick 27

We were not going to build a winning side from this draft, yet we let BJ walk.

The same welcome Mason Wood had.

Just won best clubman. I remember even halfway through the season he was still getting every mistake singled out and criticised unjustly. Now he’s a fan favourite and people realise he’s been doing quite an important role throughout the year

Didn't Higgins & Butler get dropped

Butler went through about a year or so of poor form before being dropped.

Higgins was brought back in way too early after suffering concussion and no proper gametime in the reserves.

There has been selection integrity issues, everyone has complained about it.

Another reason I suspect that Walsh has been brought appointed over Rath and co.

Only a good thing that Rath didn't get the head of football job.

If we can get Mitchell for a 3rd, we have to take it IMO.

Mitchell, Steele and Crouch would make for a slow midfield, but they shouldn't be beaten around the contest too often. A good coach should be able to make that combination work.

The challenge will be to make sure it doesn't impede the development of Windhager, Owens and our first round selection this year.
Where will we get the coach? Ratten has 2 more years.

Always thought Mason Wood was a good get for us. He's always been a quality player, Norf discarded him without rhyme or reason....

If he is showing some leadership qualities amongst the kids then I have no issues with him in the leadership group.
