Apparently the offer from Brisbane for Doedee is 3 years with a games played trigger for the 4th year.

So I suspect he's gone if we don't budge from a 2 year deal.

Can Brisbane do their trick they did with Daniher?

We might need it.

Was there ever any discussion around where he would have gone if available to the whole league?
Based on what we know now, or what we knew then?

For the record, here is the top 15 in the 2007 draft:

1 Matthew Kruezer

2 Trent Cotchin

3 Chris Masten

4 Cale Morton

5 Jarrad Grant

6 David Myers

7 Rhys Palmer

8 Lachie Henderson

9 Ben McEvoy

10 Patrick Dangerfield

11 Patrick Veszpremi

12 Cyril Rioli

13 Brad Ebert

14 Jack Grimes

15 Robbie Tarrant

Not a bad bunch actually, a few misses but not bad overall. Based on what we know now, I think you could comfortably slot Tex into that top 15, if not top 10, but hindsight is a wonderful thing. Based on what we knew then, maybe not so much.

Was going to mention that. Offers we simply won't be able to match.
The AFL aren't going to want every team staying away from Tasmanian players between now and 2028 because the list managers fully expecting a mass walk out in 4 seasons time. That would be worst case scenario for the Tassie team, and a disaster for the AFL.

I assume there is already a fairly juicy compo package for teams who take Tasmanian player being discussed to keep recruiters interested. Otherwise you are 100% right, you simply would take the non Tassie player at every selection.

I vaguely remember the story on this board at the time being that Tex was a crows fan and wanted to play for us but we were lukewarm. Collingwood tried to sign him up to their scholarship program and Tex basically recruited us, rather than vice versa.

Everyone was pretty excited about him at the time, it's not just hindsight, there was a lot of hype on this board. He kicked a bag in the senior Broken Hill grand final in his last game before he was drafted.

Looking at that top 15 above you couldn't seriously put him outside the top 5. Dangerfield probably goes 1. I'd have Tex 2, but you could make an argument for Cotchin or Cyril. Kreuzer would be up there as well if his body didn't let him down.

I remember the days of coming on here reading about how Tex went in Broken Hill that week.

Think his team were the Bulldogs.

Smells like 2nd round compo incoming based on that
I don't think the AFL take into account trigger based clauses in FA compensation, Jake Kelly took a 3 year deal at the Bombers and that got us a 3rd round pick, so I suspect it'll be the same for Doods.

Kelly's last year with us vs Doods this year very similar.

Maybe...I suspect Doodee might get a bit more money than Kelly..just a hunch

I don't think it'll be significantly more coming off of 2 ACL's. At this point I get the feeling Doods is just looking for length rather than per year dollars because like the situation Brad Crouch was in, one more bad injury and he may be having trouble getting his career back going again.

Not only free passage, but I would guess they will make it in the financial interest of Tasmanian players to move back too.
And compo will be crap.

Maybe Hamish is working on the theory if we have a heap of Tassie boys they can’t take them all.

Depends on the money, reckon Dude will be paid more than Kelly

I'm curious, why do you think the compo would be crap? If these guys are going to get overs to go back then it stands to reason that the Compo would be overs too.

As I mentioned above, the very last thing the AFL would want is 18 list managers to completely disregard selecting Tassie players for 4 years before they introduce the team.

TBH I think it would be in the AFL's best interest to make the compo a real carrot for list managers between then and now. To the point where they can build 4 year list strategies around it. Thats the only way I see the next 4 years not being a trainwreck for football in Tasmania.

A very interesting comparison
Stats look very similar
Who would have thought Kelly with more metres gained than Dodes

Callinan's son might be the exception.

I'd be annoyed if North Melbourne get rights to him as an NGA.

From previous good source , don’t be surprised if we trade out some draft collateral for Brennan Cox as a pre agent

This is the great scam of the AFL free agency. To match a RFA bid you need to match all trigger clauses, but compensation is only based on the base contract, excluding the trigger clauses. This is what stuffed us with B Crouch.

For example if you offer a player $300k per year over three years, with a trigger for $1m in their 4th year if they play 1 game over the first 3 years. Then compo is worked out on the $900k deal not the $1.9m deal. But you need to match the $1.9m deal under the free agency rules.
