A 3rd SA team is inevitable.

Within 30 years is realistic.

The bigger issues is not so much a 3rd SA team, but the VFL still having so many teams in Victoria.
They need to reduce the number of teams in melbourne to 6 at most..

Bombers
Hawks
Tigers
Carlton
Pies
Dees

Keep Geelong as they are a team thats sort of “outside” that melbourne area..

Get a tassie and NT team and maybe even look at a Cairns team.. the games pretty popular up there.

Before they even think about adding another SA team..

Dogs, kanga’s and saints can either move interstate or just be forced to leave the comp altogether.. go play VFL..

There will probably be some short term pain with the loss of some supporters but it will be better for the comp as a whole n the long run..

Pipe dream is the following:
  • Out: Doedee
  • In: Himmel, Will Day / Hollands (pipe dream I know), and Moir

Likely scenario is achieve 2 of the 3 above ins. Would instantly improve our team once again.
Imagine the following team!

FB: Worrel / Butts / Michalanney
HB: Himmel / B smith / Hinge
C: Dawson / Day (or Hollands) / Soliglo
HF: Rachelle / Pedlar / Rankine
F: Fog / Tex / McAdam
Fol: Larid, Berry, ROB
I/C: Murray / Jones / TT / Sloane

There's a likely chance Sloane/Tex retires, so it opens it up for Moir / Himel

It won't serve us to lose Tom as an RFA as any compo we get we would lose on Himmelberg..we need to be smarter on how we deal with the possibility of Tom leaving.

A possible strategy to your set up proposed MIGHT be - if a club ended up offering enough for Tom to be an end of 1st round compo pick.

Trade for Himmelberg using our 2nd rounders (maybe one of this years and our F2 - both years picks likely to be low 20's picks)
Use the end of 1st compo and maybe a 2nd for Will Day if we can convince him to come and he has shown his worth as a mid
Use our 2023 1st for Moir if we are in the hitting zone (top 5 I am guessing it would have to be)

Lose Tom, our 2023 1st, both of our 2023 2nds and a F2 to gain Himmelberg, Day and Moir

As harsh as it sounds and might freak the slicers I think this has to be our thinking

I like Tom and if he decides to stay then welcome - but if he feels its time for him to also cash in then thank you for your service and good luck

Yup, I'm coming to this as well, especially with Michaelanny looking a serious defensive prospect. Ditto Worrell.

That said, **** making that decision, seeing both pay or trade calls feel wrong.

Leaves an interesting question: of Day, HH, Redman, NWM and Hollands, who would we say is most to least likely to leave?

I’d probably go:
NWM (Saints fans seem super worried here)
Himmelberg
Redman
Day
(daylight)
Hollands

I’d like to wait until Worrell comes back and shows form in the ones this year before being super confident in making that decision

It’s also kind of moot if you’re bringing in a FA - defeats part of the purpose of going for Redman/HH (not all of it though, considering a rebounding HB and a KPD are bigger needs)

I think the only way GWS would take that is if we trade both those picks for a higher pick (ie what Carlton arranged with Sydney for the Gov deal to go through back in 2018)

The Day/Moir combo would be dependent on us finishing bottom 4 (still very possible) - puts us in the top end talent hitting zone as well as maybe being too high of a pick to trade out for Day

I called to trade him last year and got yelled done. With our list still very young, I’d like to hit the draft 1 more time this year as we still done have an elite powerful midfielder.
We have our pick this year, trade in next years first into this draft as well as the 2 seconds we have, plus trade in Doedee for Geelongs or Dogs first and we can set ourselves up for a big haul. Try for a free agent and we are set.

We may challenge a year or 2 later but it will be Fantastic , with a lot of talent

Hollands only due to being contracted next year. If he is a genuine centre square mid - and the Suns remain terrible - then watch the fear rise next year if he doesn’t sign early

At this stage he isn’t getting a starting gig in front of Miller, Anderson, Rowell. Swallow will start to come out although Bailey Humphrey seems a big inside mid as well

The opportunity might come

If we could turn Tom into Will Day this year - If Tom is wanting to leave - even if we had to swing a 2nd into it - its a win for us as we have cover for Tom but could really really use that high quality big bodied mid

Lets hope we are already putting in the groundwork so that he knows a big offer is sitting there to come and play with his childhood supported team

Darwin doesn't have the population to support an AFL team. Let alone the weather during winter isn't ideal for AFL week in, week out.
What? You can set your clock to the weather in winter up there.
30-32 every day, no rain.

My gut feel is they don't want to give Doedee the type of big deal he's looking for, which is why they're letting him go.

Those 3 + one of Murray/Butts would be the way to go I think, add in Max as the guy who can play tall/small (I think Worrell could do this too) and you've got a nice starting back 6 with someone like Parnell or Milera rounding it out.
Doedee, Himmelburg, Worrell, Max and Murray? All in the same backline?

Any team with decent small and midsize forwards would destroy us.

"Norwood planning an AFL bid" sounds like a December/January "we're bored" The Advertiser story. Not something written about in the week of a Showdown.
As an aside - and I dont read papers or watch nightly news- what has the build up been like?

I dont even think we have a dedicated thread about the game
