Butts at 198cm has the extra 4cm of height on Keane and Murray (194cm ea). That's his POD. in an ideal world it'd be Butts, Murray and Worrell as our 3 talls.

Though, with Murray out for a lot of next year, Keane gets that gig.
If Butts can put his foot down and reclaim no.1 def status, it'll make the back half of 2024 and start of 2025 very interesting, but a good problem to have.

I'm not sure I have a great deal of faith in Butts to do this ATM though. He needs to turn himself into a Daniel Talia quality lock down, as he's not gonna get by on any rebounding prowess.

Murray-Keane-Worrell would be ok, but adding a Petty def wouldn't hurt, and would throw in another conundrum, and essentially delist Borlase.

So just for fun...
Who amongst our usual backs could go into the forward line unexpectedly and snag a few goals?
Jordan Butts kicked plenty of goals for the Murray Bushies when stationed forward in 2018.

We have no idea what was said to Sloane.

We do know he said he re-signed because he still feels he's AFL standard and has something to offer. He absolutely should say that. I'm not expecting him to say that he thinks he'll be playing in the reserves all year.

But I want the club to have been direct with him about our intentions.

Also, for what it's worth - Sloane is two years younger than Boak and had a better season by every measurable. I think both should have retired, but anyone trying to argue that Boak is somehow more deserving of a contract than Sloane is just showing their biases.

We know what Sloane thinks, and we know he’s confident and assured about speaking publicly about his belief and expectations of his role

We absolutely know these things

That funnels down to a very narrow set of options for what his discussions with the club look like

And we know that the club picked him for every single game that he was available. He didn't even get the Tex week off treatment.

Hypothetical here, if we got pick 4 from Gold Coast how would people feel if we swapped pick 4, pick 9 and our future first for pick 1 and West Coast future second so we can get Harley Reid?

It's a no from me. That's a lot to give up on someone who is already making noise that he wants to return to Vic one day.

That's why I think the Eagles should trade pick 1 and try to grab multiple first round picks. They need as many first rounders into their team as they can at this early stage of their rebuild.

Interesting name. I can't say I've seen him take a contested mark.
Did we train him into a backman due to need at the time of his arrival?
Pretty obviously yes, Jordan played all over the ground in his 3 years in now what is called the Coates Talent League, essentially the Bushies tall swingman. Played key defence where his intercepting marking was on show, key forward, wing and some ruck/midfield, in that order.

Played key back really well for VC as an underager at the Nationals bearing in mind with a very late December birthday he was only 16 at the time. He was noted for his endurance/running power and intercept marking.
He now plays a way more dour stopper type role which leads me to believe that's more by coaching design than playing what was his natural game.

On principle, my view is that we don’t have enough high end talent on our list. And have historically run a football strategy that was predicated upon training, experience and implementation of a game plan by a bunch of mid first rounders and beyond will lead to success. It’s wrong. Even Nicks admitted a pivot towards talent over drilling mediocre slugs this season. It’s ingrained in the club.

To compete in the top 4 for multiple years we need at least 2 more elite or A grade mids. We’re not getting them with multiple picks in the 20s. We’ve got enough fringe role players as it is.
To win a GF at the MCG against everything the VFL will throw at us we need a far better 22 than we currently have.

Sloane
Laird
Keays
Murphy
ROB

All need to be replaced in the next 24 months.

Laird being the last to be replaced out of the 5 of them..

And I’d argue that Smithers and Tex will need to be retired and replaced in the next 12-24 months too..

This delusional thought process from some around here (usually used to defend their favourite little trier) that “we can afford have a couple of poorer skilled role players in our 22 cause every team has those” is not only ignorant of the fact that we have more than a couple.. it also ignores that we have to have every single player in our 22 perform at a high level if we are to have any chance to win a GF at the MCG.

Two, three or even four players, with poor skills and decision making, that try and make up for it by just trying harder isnt gonna cut it.

We’ll continue to see the same shit we’ve seen since the late 90’s.. a team thats good enough to make finals but not good enough to make a GF, let alone lift the cup.

You're the one who suggested our future 1st and 3 x 2nd rounders for pick 6, who is this player you want to give these 4 picks up for?

Not sure what I’m willing to give up for the suns pick 4 has to do with my comment but I’ll answer it anyway..

The best player at that pick would be my answer..

Hopefully it would be that durrsma lad.. if not I’d go the wizard..

The wizard instantly replaces murphy or keays in that forward line and also helps in freeing up rachele, rankine and pedlar for more midfield minutes by providing elite x-factor coverage for them.

Also hoping Cook finally steps up next season.. and he comes into that roaming half forward/wing conversation as a replacement for murphy too..

its do or die at this point for cook.. which really is a damning indictment on our selection committee given they continue to pick that fxxkn spud murphy in front of him.

Also… Given north already have a heap of young midfield talent on their books.. anything could happen on the night.. maybe a zane durrsma slips past their picks..

Having pick 4 puts us in the box seat for it.

You would trade a future 1st and 3 x 2nd rounders for a small forward, because..... Keays and Murphy?

If Cal has Duursma at pick 3 he's likely not available at GC's pick 6.
