Some pretty reasonable pick ups in Keays and Hinge who weren't regulars in their team at the time, far from it actually. Keane looking pretty good too who was on the fringes at Collingwood.
Totally agree with you. Can see a very big upside to Mark Keane. Hopefully he and one of our recruiters have been to Ireland or about to. He must know some athletes who would make it here. We have 2 Cat B vacancies coming up. Someone like the great Jim Stynes would be nice. Thoughts?

I didn’t know you were there at the negotiations. You know best.
That comment would have been based on what Sloane himself said when interviewed on 5AA where he said the only discussion about SANFL he had was around if his form wasn't good enough to play AFL, which he didn't believe was going to be an issue for a few years. So either Sloane is too proud to admit he's been told "You're in the SANFL unless someone gets hurt" or the club chickened out and haven't told Sloane that he's in the SANFL unless otherwise required and weasel worded their way through the conversation.

Now if it's the 2nd one, this has the potential to have a messy Tyson Edwards ending to everything because from the way Sloane talked he is not expecting to play SANFL at all next year.

Successful clubs don't behave like this.

Likewise, but I equally get the impression that his future doesn't lie as a KPD.

Looks suited to be a Lever styled interceptor though.

Jay Clark said on the Rush Hour last night that we are still going very hard after Petty as part of this McAdam deal and that Petty is seriously considering it given that it is a chance to come home. Obviously Melbourne are under zero obligation to trade him, but we are actively trying to improve our list. Missed Redman, missed Day, maybe 3rd time lucky this year?

We have no idea what was said to Sloane.

We do know he said he re-signed because he still feels he's AFL standard and has something to offer. He absolutely should say that. I'm not expecting him to say that he thinks he'll be playing in the reserves all year.

But I want the club to have been direct with him about our intentions.

Also, for what it's worth - Sloane is two years younger than Boak and had a better season by every measurable. I think both should have retired, but anyone trying to argue that Boak is somehow more deserving of a contract than Sloane is just showing their biases.

I'd prefer Harrison Petty over Brennan Cox. Petty is a very good player

Any watch much of Connor Stone from gws in the VFL?

I've only seen him play one afl game of his 3 and he kick a few goals and looked alright.

I know we were linked to him at where we took pedlar. Think he'd be good to try get out of gws in the Himmelberg trade.

Been very underwhwelming at both AFL and VFL levels in the games I've watched actually. Been tried in defence after being drafted as a forward. Has had big big hamstring issues over his time at the Giants as well. Andrew McPherson like issues?

I’m sorry but are you basing this comment on potential or on what they have done? Because Cox was 2nd in Freos best and fairest last year (ahead of Serong)and in the All Australian squad as well. His year this year was pretty special as well and I’m sure he will be top 10 in their b n f again Which is bloody hard for a key back. There is a reason that they just signed him for 6 years and it’s by far the biggest miss this club has had in a long time. Day and Redman would be great but they are not near as important as Brennan Cox would have been.

I'm basing it on what they have done. Petty is a great defender that holds together Melbourne's defense and allows Lever to become an unaccountable loose third tall. He's a capable interceptor, he's aggressive and is quite versatile. He's the third tall defender behind two All Australians but was crucial IMO to Melbourne's flag and often had big roles on the second best forward of the opposition.

Cox looks flashy because he plays much more of a third tall role, which we don't need. Cox gets a lot more uncontested ball and doesn't do as much one on one defending, often taking lesser players. He's not a significantly better intercept mark, in fact I'd say he's probably a worse interceptor than Doedee.

But I've said before that I don't rate Cox especially highly, I think he's a good typical defender but I don't think he could be our #1 key defender which is why I was firmly against trading him in. Petty absolutely could be that player and would complement Murray and Worrell nicely.

I also strongly disagree that Cox is a bigger miss than Will Day. Couldn't disagree more actually.

Well it’s all opinion but Cox is not at all a similar player to Doedee. He’s about 6 inches taller and much much bigger. The accurate comparison would be to Lever or May from Melbourne, and that is absolutely something we need. In fact I would argue that its the most pressing need we have.

just looking at his stats this year he is comfortably ahead of May and Lever who are the benchmark for intercepting key defenders, and he was top 15 in the league for contested marks. I think he suffers from people not paying much attention to Freo, but in a world where Ben McKay is worth a band 1 compo then Brennan Cox is seriously underrated.

Petty, Murray, Worrell would be an awesome tall set for the backline.

Butts in there too maybe, or maybe next one in line, especially while Murray recovers.

Still have hope that Butts will improve from good to elite. Honestly I think it's psychological - just needs a bit more strutting around, bit more eye of the tiger.

I don't know whether you have checked the stats or not but both Lever and May actually average more intercept marks and intercept possessions. In fact Petty averages more intercept marks in 2 of the last 3 seasons. So I disagree that he is the better intercept key defender and he's not on the same level as a May or Lever in general. He does get more ball, because Fremantle's defense uses him as a distributor off half back.

I don't think he's a bad player or anything, just not elite or in the top handful of defenders around the league (certainly not to the level of spending first round draft picks)

Has also occasionally played forward for Melbourne too and had some great games for them in 2023.

Very versatile, could be a great swing man.:thumbsu:

I think if Petty's 6 goal game was against us (like Cox's 4 goal game was) Crows fans would have a very different view of him

For mine, Butts always looks like he has just woken up. Definitely does not have the demeanour that would make someone who is lining up on him for the first time think "Yeah, it's gonna be a bad day..."

Had Mark Keane returned from Ireland back to Collingwood, he'd be standing next to big Joe this Saturday afternoon.
And we still think he's fringe...

If all fully fit, it's going to be a tough call on Keane, Butts and Murray. Assume we would ever only play two of these. Who misses out?
