Surely if it was to happen, the player involved wouldn't have been guaranteed being re-taken in the rookie draft.

Sure, but I doubt you'd find anyone - or their management - agreeing to void an AFL contract in the hope they get selected in the rookie draft by the same club.

We nominated Ben Jarman and selected him in the rookie draft, however I think there must be different ways to do it as all the talk on Jarman was written about us nominating him as a "potential father-son selection", which I believe meant he was open in the national draft, but guaranteed to us if he slipped to the rookie draft.

I believe with Welsh this is a full obligation and we have to pick him if no one else bids on him in the national draft.
This is correct. The 2024 AFL Draft Booklet lists 2 dates for lodging F/S nominations.

31st October - Father-Son and Academy Bidding Nominations Lodged
22nd Nov - Northern Academy and NGA Academy eligible Pre-Selected Rookie and Father-Son Pre0Selected Rookie player nominations submitted to the AFL.

Note that the ND occurs on 20-21 November.

By nominating him in the 31st Oct nomination, we are effectively committed to selecting him with our last live pick in the ND, if nobody has bid on him previously. We are not, however, obligated to match any bid.

The list mathematics dictates that we need to upgrade 1 rookie. Keane is the most likely, given that he's a regular member of our best 22.

Yes, Keane could spend 2 more years on the rookie list, as could Borlase & Turray.

As for the salary cap considerations... Only part of a rookie's salary is excluded from the salary cap - an amount equivalent to the salary of a 1st year rookie draftee. In 2025, that will be $100K. It's the same amount excluded regardless of what the player's actual salary is. Thus, salary cap considerations are about the number of players on the rookie list, not the actual players on the rookie list.
That’s the bit , cheers.

Sounds like Michelanney Jnr is going to be offered a SANFL spot should he go undrafted.

Now who was it that said he wouldn't.....

Not quite...

They could do Pick 4 and 2x rookie upgrades, taking Welsh in the RD (assuming nobody else selects him in the ND or PSD). I think it's 90% likely that we'll go down the ND route, upgrading only 1 rookie, but the possibility still exists until the club confirms how many rookies they're upgrading.
I’d say it’s almost 100% certain we go the ND route. Can’t see us risking the chance someone bids on him and lose out all together.

Or put an age restriction of say 23 yo on rookies …… that may be a bit difficult to administer, as you know a 24-26 yo state league player will fail to get an opportuniy

Maybe put a n AFL games played as a restriction …. maybe rookie spots are only open to players with fewer than 20 games
Salary restriction I reckon. Have to be upgraded to the senior list if you're earning more than $150k

Remember when feenix67 said Schoenberg was gonna win a brownlow? Swing and a miss. Make podcast equipment more expensive xo
Nice job potting from the cheapest of seats. I really hope this was in good jest, because Feen's contribution to this (and the larger crow fan) community is right up there. We all get it wrong from time to time and have had our personal faves who flopped (hey Troy Menzel and Riley Knight)

Was just about to post, no one has a perfect record

I liked Lachie Murphy before this season. Had a shocking year.

No, we can't back out of the commitment. It's a contract.

I believe that nominating Welsh as a F/S (announced last Friday) means that we're committed to taking him in the ND, if no bids come in before our last "live" selection. I'm not 100% certain about this, but I believe it is the case.
The rules say the club may pick them up once nominated, so seems there is some wriggle room. It’s also covered by a determination which isn’t made public- so that may shut the door on passing on them.

So, the only questions remaining for the AFC draft night are:
1. Does Hamish have too many tequilas on the night and trade pick 4? (If yes, then a whole can of questions opens up!)
2. Assuming not, who do we take at Pick 4?
3. Do we match any bid on Welsh? (Choosing not to makes 64 a live pick!)
4. If we don't take Welsh, do we leave a spot open or pick up a project ruck?

Another Q for Vader - are we actually obliged to pick Welsh if no-one else bids now that we have 'nominated' him as F/S, or does that nomination just give us the right to match a bid?
If no one bids on welsh in the draft he’s ours in the rookie draft. Like we did with Jarman and Edwards. Will mean that there is no spot for one of the two delisted today
