Which is what makes me think that our problems are 90% development, rather than talent identification.

Godden's ability to turn U18 guns into AFL nugs is unsurpassed.

Having said that, the balance of our drafting - with a notable failure to select any gun midfielders (other than Soligo) for over a decade - is a massive problem. However, that's not a problem with talent identification, it's a problem with list management making bad decisions about our list/drafting needs.

Up until last year our list management believed our midfield to be 'stacked'. No room to give Dawson a few weeks in there or trial Rankine.

The problems with trading a future pick into the top 10 this year are as follows:
1) Hamish would be picking the player
2) A team has to agree to the trade - what would really be in that for them when this year’s top 10 is considered very strong?
I agree with a lot of your post.
In regards to the above, the only way I see it happening is if one of Brisbane/Carlton/GCS finishes 10th to 13th, and the player they have to bid on ends up projected in the top 6. And even then, we'll likely have to have a full on bidding war with some other clubs over the pick in question.

So, I think Brisbane, Carlton and Gold Coast's firsts are on the table for this year.

So would be some or all of Freo's firsts.

We may have picks from ROB going, maybe a very late pick for McHenry/Sholl, maybe Butts and Keane are available, maybe we get some late compo for Himmelburg.

I'd be happy for the 2025 first to be on the table for the right thing - but it can't just be rubbish.

Our top five pick needs to be a mid.

I'm happy for us to be targetting Perry if it only really costs us Keane (to Coll) and later picks. I'm happy for us to target Luko, as long as our first this year isn't a part of conversation.

I want to know we're also getting at least one of English/Moyle and also Perryman. I don't hate the idea of Yeo, if the role is clear.

You forgot McHenry and Jones!

We have a couple of kids dominating as under agers eligible for the draft next year but the AFL changes to the rules and out likely ladder position means we will only be able to match on one of them

Likely wouldn’t use the Melbourne linked pick so unlikely
That's assuming they'll apply those changes to the northern clubs - wouldn't put it beyond them to exempt you guys from it.

The VFL wants us competitive not contending, surely you guys are fully aware of the VIC Bias that dominates the narrative. They were screaming about our academy and were successful in getting the rules changed because we had one year with 4 graduates, that’s more than than we have drafted in the entire history of the academy, quintessential knee jerk, yet in a city with 10 teams players can nominate a club, this suits the large Melbourne clubs and as such nothing ever gets done. That’s my 2 cents anyway

I would actually throw in a pick of ours if any club actually has any interest in McFumbly :$

If we end up with a top 5 pick in a midfield heavy draft where there really are promising mids at the top end and we have traded that pick on a utility....i am done

On our drafting record we would be better swapping picks than drafting

We seem to trade better than draft with our best two players traded

A better option would be better to trade Hamish for a capable person

Our senior players don't provide good leadership so I'm not against getting a Yeo type to get some fresh voices around the group. Obviously can't be three years

Really like the look of Alex Dodson in ruck. Can we get him please.

Phoenix Hargrave and Jacob Newton really impressive. Add them.

Draper and Sharp we can take with our first picks in the draft over the next two years.

Add Harley Barker and Thomas McKay as project players. Barker in particular with a bit of x-factor.

They can all feed Welsh, Thilthorpe and Fogarty to the next premiership.

Going to have to finish low next year to be in a spot to draft sharp you'd think

IN a perfect world, would absolutely love to draft 2 x gun top 5 mids in this draft.... Some serious talent on display in these National games. J Smith and Moraes look really good.
Now come on be serious. On what planet would anyone give us the opportunity to have a second top 5 pick in this draft and set up our midfield for a decade?

Nope, there has definitely never been anyone keen to give us one of those - in November 2023 or at any other time...

How is Dan Curtin traveling, anyway?
