I’m not making judgment. I deliberately used the words “shaping up to be” because it’s early days.

I’m not saying I expected him to win the Brownlow or even the Rising Star in year one. But I’d rather hoped that by June we’d be in a position where the best that could be said is something more than “don’t rush to judgment”.
I'd argue 'don't rush to judgement' along with glimpses of potential is all you're really ever going to get with a tall in year 1. I think people are way too worried about Curtin at this point and expecting far more than is reasonable. It would have been nice if he had played more games, absolutely, but I wouldn't be reading too much into his performances at all.

For a bit of comparison, here are the top 10 draft picks over 195cm from the last 3 years in their first season:
  • Sam Darcy (Pick 2) - 4 games, debuted in round 21, though actually was pretty good in those games, obviously a massive talent
  • Mac Andrew (Pick 5) - 4 games, debuted in round 20
  • Jye Amiss (Pick 8) - 3 games, played in round 8 and then 2 finals, kicked 4 goals
  • Josh Gibcus (Pick 9) - 18 games, played pretty much the full season though did fade towards the end
  • Aaron Cadman (Pick 1) - 12 games, debuted in round 5 and played most of the season, was subbed off in a third of his games and missed the end of the season and finals. Kicked 6 goals.
  • Jed Walter (Pick 3) - 10 games so far, has kicked 9 goals and shown glimpses but certainly not dominating.
  • Ethan Read (Pick 9) - 4 games so far, similar to Curtin in that he's been subbed off a few times and hasn't done too much, though did kick a couple against the Hawks.

A lot of these guys had injury issues, struggled to break into the side, or struggled to impact games when picked. Most did show potential as well because they are all good players. And none are busts, the ones who were not drafted in 2023 all look good.

Curtin isn't massively behind these guys. Hopefully he can put together a couple more good SANFL games and play some more AFL this season but a few games and glimpses of potential is about on pace. What we want to see is improvement next season.

Going to have to finish low next year to be in a spot to draft sharp you'd think
Or we try and trade for a future 1st from WC or NM to give ourselves a better chance. Be a bit brave and creative with our players and picks to give ourselves a chance? ROB or Laird and a swap of future 1sts? Curtin for a future 1st?

If we can’t convince a gun mid to come to us by trade or free agency we must draft one in.

So you think that it was what is currently a swap of pick 4 for 3 and with that being the case you also agree it was one of our worst moves to turn it down?
From the article in CTID's post, I think the deal was WC's r1 this year for pick 8 when Curtin was still available. So we could be holding picks 4 & 5 right now (but no Curtin).

Yeah, of course they are.

Players make decisions for lifestyle - they want to go to strong clubs, but they don't act like fans who follow the game emotionally.

They'd look to the Crows and see a lower midtable team that's been rebuilding; had a bit of a step back this year but has some good talent. Mist players would think they'd improve us, and we'd be around the mark with a few additions and changes.

Players have been going to Carlton and Essendon and others for years - they look beyond last week's win/loss record.
Carlton have shown some courage by backing in Elijah Hollands. Lots of red flags had to be overcome.

Looking like a great acquisition now though.

Ypu are the only on here that is correct, it was a pick swap of first rounders. Given where we are likely to end up would have been a big win for West Coast
This is not accurate. WCE would’ve taken Curtin if they had pick 2 and offered their future first to each club until Curtin was drafted in order to get him. GWS took Adelaide‘s deal as it allowed them to keep their presence early in the draft rather then defer it to next year.

I personally would’ve taken that deal but more to do with likely having pick 1 or 2 this year than Curtin himself, who I think will be an elite level player.

Who is our next ruck then?

Do we try get that moyle bloke from gold coast?
barnett from the eagles?
verell from the dees?
try bring in tyler goad?

gotta bring in atleast 1 new ruck i reckon this off season.

If LDU is looking to move, Adelaide can offer huge $$

What will likely be a top 4/5 pick this season do you take 2024 and 2025 firsts for LDU if you’re NM?

If North improve next year pick 4 now and say pick 12 next year is a decent deal
Compared to solely pick 6 next year based on likely improvement

I say we go chips in LDU

Get Welsh as f/s with junk picks

In;
Welsh
Moyle
LDU
Perryman/Cumming (either or)

2025;
NWM for 2026 first rounder

Are you saying our 2024 first (likely top 6) AND our 2025 first (realistically, probably top 10)?

I think they'd take that. I wouldn't want to do it though.

LDU? No thanks

LDU? No thanks

In fairness, not a lot of experienced mids going around. We need to move past laird and LDU provides a 1 in 1 out option. Dowling is 2 seasons away from being anything close to a full time premier mid. So its not the worst idea. I just think we shouldn't chuck all our eggs into his basket. We may have to offer overs but we dont want to be stupid about it as we want other players.

LDU is genuinely the only midfielder type probably other than bailey smith we need. Modern afl midfields have mids kicking at least a goal every 2 game minimum per midfielder. laird, crouch, dawso (sometimes snags a few), soligo arent that. Dont get me wrong soligo and dawso should be in the midfield mix going forward but i would not trade our top pick this year. draft a genuine link breaking start mid, this draft is stacked with mifielders, go get the best one possible.

if we can get LDU without getting rid of this years 1st round pick would be amazing.

i would consider packaing a butts and gollant and future 1st for him. North need a key back, and need a second tall forward.

LDU is good but nowhere near a 2 x 1st rd picks player. Unless we're getting a Bailey Smith level mid (and we're not) we need to take this year's first and finally draft an elite mid.

Would consider giving Luke Parker a couple of years as an on field leader/midfield general, transitioning into coaching while this year's/next year's 1st rd picks are developing. We lack experience, leadership and midfield craft - even our best mids Dawson and Rankine, have played elsewhere most of their careers.

Think our coaching staff should always include an about to/just retired player from a strong club to bring current, fresh ideas into our system.

How's Hunter Clark going? I tend to ignore St Kilda games for obvious reasons but former top 10 pick who never really got going, had a lot of injuries but always looks like a genuine footballer that could break out at any time. Restricted free agent next year - which is surprising but I guess they gotta pay someone over there - wonder if we could prise him out for a pick in the 30s as a 'pre-agent'?

Haha, I got the big thumbs down from old mate Sanders when I suggested a while back Luke Parker was on the outer and might be worth a look?

I must admit I'm confused about the idea of getting Parker and Yeo - not because I think they are not quality - they are - but the suggested idea that they are going to be there to help teach our up and coming midfield.

I would think that is Laird and Crouch role

If we are getting them for any other reason then we have failed our development or drafting

It's really not a good look for the club either way

I’ve got a bad feeling we’ve Bryce Gibbsed this one and made promises to him that we’ll get him next time no matter what it takes.
And we’d be too nice to say we had our fingers crossed and to forget the whole thing.
Maybe the afl would step in and say the trade is unfair and a late 4th would be more fair than 2 firsts.
However there is a chance that they’d uncover something we’d had written down instead promising the trade.

I saw Dawson reposting one of Luke Parkers wifes business posts on social media over the weekend and thought that was a bit strange.

Parker is 32 in October. Wife looks to have a successful business in Sydney.
