There are currently 26 players whose contract expires at the end of 2025 or sooner.

At this stage only 9 are worth retaining beyond that

Taylor Walker also deserves a one year extension but can't see him playing beyond 2025

I'd put Wayne Milera in the maybe category

Should be getting rid of 16 players over the next two years, and I think that's come about because of our refusal to turn the list over in the last two years. Means there's a glut to move on at once rather than pacing out some of those departures last year.

We seem scared to take a late pick instead of retaining a player that probably isn't good enough at the top level (like Borlase or Parnell) even though clubs find decent players late in the draft every year

LM, you can see the DNA in a lot of their draft profiles.

McHenry, Jones, Berry, Pedlar all poor production in juniors and its correlated at AFL level.
This is factually incorrect.

Chayce Jones in his draft year.
2018 Nationals averaged 21.5 disposals across his 4 Allies games (Flat 25 minute quarters)
2018 All Australian named on ball with Sam Walsh
2018 Tasmanian State League averaged 23.3 disposals, 8.3 clearances in his 7 games against the men.
Would have made the TSL T.O.Y but was considered not to have played enough games.

Launceston draft prospect Chayce Jones was the form player for the final five rounds of the season and produced some of the league’s most blistering footy. The selection panel strongly considered picking the brilliant Jones but a handful of games was considered not enough to see him selected. Clarence skipper Brady Jones was also on the verge of selection but couldn’t quite squeeze into the 22 despite a reliable and consistent season across half back and in the middle.

Sam Berry

Never played any football in his draft year (Covid)
2019 underage year for Gippy Power averaged 17.7 disposals, 4.4 clearances from his 10 games and only got a decent run through the midfield when top agers Caleb Serong and Sam Flanders were required for Nationals duty for Vic Country (4 games).

Ned McHenry
Averaged 15 disposals across his 4 Nationals games for Vic Country playing as a pressure forward
Averaged 18.5 disposals for the Geelong Falcons playing as as a midfielder/forward/winger.

Luke Pedlar
Only resumed late in the season due to off season shoulder surgery that had seen him miss most of his underage year and never really got going, obviously the recruiters had seen enough of his PAC footy from his U16's onwards to rate him highly. The word was GWS were set to grab him if we didn't take him at that point. And I might add he's never really got going with the Crows as yet due to uinjuries having a heavy impact on his general fitness and output.

Wasn't it said that list management and recruiting would be looked at, and have a shake-up at the end of the year?

I might just be too optimistic, but I think we 'mutually part ways' with Hamish at the end of the year (maybe after this draft)
You don't change those things just before the draft/trade period.
You do it just after, so the new person gets time to build what they want.

At the very least what do we need to be a genuine contender.

2 - A grade midfielders
A ruckman
Another quality tall defender.
A defensive small forward (playing in the dreadful Murphy's position)

Hopefully we fill a few of the above this year or this will drag on for another decade of nothingness.

Last one will be covered by ANB

I'd chase Ballard hard at the end of next year for the tall defender

Don't know how we're going to get the ruckman, I wouldn't move the F1 for Dodson. Would have to find someone ready to break out from another side in the next two offseasons

Pick 4 is hopefully a midfielder. Only problem is, if it's someone like Lalor, they probably take a little while to grow into that role. Is a Dawson/Soligo/Taylor/Rankine/Curtin/Edwards mix good enough by 2026? Do we add, say, a Hinge type to the mix?

Hinge to midfield doesn't change anything IMO. Just makes the half back line weaker.

Anyone for Oliver? Probably a massive gamble feel like our midfield is going nowhere currently.
Pick 4, Curtin, Soligo, Taylor probably going to be good in time but that's realistically at least 4 years away.
IF Soligo and Taylor are going to be good mids it shouldnt take until 7 years into their career to determine.

Clearly we need a couple more guns - pick 4 will be one - so lets assume Draper, Rankine, Dawson, Soligo, Taylor, Rachele (ideally part time) and Curtin optimistically. Crouch can be solid for another 2-3 years also and has been good overall since returning to the team late last year

I reckon we'll know a lot about Soligo/Taylor's ceilings within the next couple of years, they should have fully improved their fitness levels and ability to run out a season by then

Clearly smart and composed players, just need them to be able to consistently accumulate (and in Soli's case maybe settle a bit after bursting away from traffic)

Curtin was benched for 40 mins? When?
Most of the 2nd quarter was one space
I specifically checked the “time on ground” stats at half time last night because it was apparent that Curtin had been on the bench for an extraordinary amount of the first half.

Half time:
Curtin: 49% TOG
Next lowest: Wines at 60%

How on earth does someone who has not required a concussion test, isn’t playing in a hugely demanding “two way” role, and didn’t leave the ground via the blood rule or to have a fitness test end up spending MORE THAN HALF OF THE FIRST HALF on the bench?

It’s ludicrous.

not sure where to mention this but looking at our draw and teams we doubled up against surely we have the hardest draw in the AFL (after the second hardest last year on one measure. Hardest on another measure in terms of playing top 4 teams)

This year we play the following teams twice

1 Swans
2 Power
4 Cats
5 Lions
7 (could become 6th if GWS beats Bullies)

and 11 Dons

Look we arent good enough on many fronts but HTF do we keep ending up with the HARDEST draw every single year. Is it just 'bad luck'. Not one of the other bottom 7 sides in the AFL do we play twice.

Waiting for updated analysis from afl site or Herald Sun talking about how we were 'unlucky' that GWS and Cats improved so much (ie reverting back to their trend of making finals the last 6-7 years with last year being an exception for both), Syd (2022 GF's) improving more than expected etc etc

Next year, less concerned with commercial fixture and want the Port Power type fixture (Eagles, tigers, Dons at home in the first mth) to get off to a good start

seems a little extreme. who are the 16 - I assume you are talking main list? - you currently think aren't either AFL quality or solid AFL depth? I can get up to around 10 but interested in who these 16 are in your view

Its why if there is a taker for our f1 on draft night if a second top end mid is there at the back end of the top 10 to early teens, we should be seriously looking to pull the trigger and get in 2 extra high end mids this year and then try to determine who will really make it. We have to get in multiple top end mids.

Also i am sure its been mentioned but GWS Peatling looks a real player, if he is gettable then we should be looking at him

Karl Gallagher (R, Cat B)
Brodie Smith
Taylor Walker (assuming he gets an extension)

Contracted until end of 2024
Sam Berry
Ned McHenry
Lachlan Gollant
Patrick Parnell (R)

Well maybe we should beat these teams a few times and they'd drop down the ladder.

I'd be okay with Hamill, Borlase and/or EH sticking around another year or two for depth reasons (given we clearly see them as such, and they're at least a little bit capable). ROB's status is fully dependant on whether we're able to get another capable ruck onto the list (clearly needs to be a priority)

Anyone else, I'd be fine with pushing out - including Crouch, who I've rated since he's come back in, but we probably need to prioritise Taylor in his role after his contract expires

ok thanks. Hard to argue with too many of those names and a chunk mentioned are retiring (Tex, Smith, Crouch) or rookies (inc Cat B)

end of this year - most seem right but disagree with Borlase (can remain on rookie list as decent cheap back up), one of Burgess or H/Berg will remain on the list for next year. Wasn't there a recent rumour Berg wanted to stay / Giants lost interest) and/or Burgess has another year remaining. I personally like Hamill so would keep as a rookie.

But agree Gollant, Parnell, Mc H delisted, one of Berg or Burgess = 4
Traded - Berry (possibly Keane) = 1/2
So probably more like 6 this year IMO but will be interesting to monitor

In bound trades - probably 2 (ANB and Luko) and 3-4 picks at draft inc pick 4, Dees seconder that we upgrade, Welsh, and perhaps a Hamish special IF we still have a late pick (unlikely IMO with picks needed for Welsh and inbound trades)

And most look right for 2025 but ROB probably gets a 1-2 year extension depending on maturity of replacement brought in and Crouch may get another year if still performing well

Hamill and Borlase I’d keep for depth. ROB only because we’ve left ourselves no alternatives. Mrouch is still afl standard. That’s it.
