Hinkley basically guaranteed Jonas will be back.

Going into the game without a recognised ruckman is just dumb. Even if you don't rate Hayes, having to play Dixon or Finlayson in the ruck robs you of a damaging forward and means you put those players at risk.

And who are you actually bring ing. Lord? Bloke is not worth going into a game without a ruckman.

They liked Visentini's sanfl game and maybe this is a reasonable game to bring him in.
Lord isn't even notably better than Hayes at Lord's position, let alone Hayes' position.

If Hayes comes out, it's because Lycett is fit. If Lord comes in, it's because Dixon is unfit.

Jonas is 100% coming in with McKenzie’s injury. Ken pretty much announced it in his presser.

The more interesting part will be who does he go to? I wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t take either of the big two forwards and they try and hide him on Silvagni when he goes forward or their third option.

Other than that it’s:
Narkle / Evans / Fanta for Rioli

Maybe another week for x in the twos. Once they work out Jonas is shot X in for Jonas and Bergman goes down back.

This is the game we drop.

Out: Rioli, McKenzie, Dixon
In: Duursma, Pasini, Lord

Narkle sub again.

Not opposed to trying Evans in Rioli’s place if the club feels Duursma needs one more week at SANFL level.

The gymnastics being done on here to keep Jonas out is amazing 🤩

Edit: for clarity, I completely agree he shouldn’t be in our 22 & hopefully he sees it and retires at years end.

That's the real problem, and it probably depends how long McKenzie is out for.

Can probably get away with it against Carlton, but Jonas can't play McKenzie's fullback/deepest defender role. Bergman/Jones can cover for a little while, and they've been doing well to combine as the third tall. But the group of undersized key/mid defenders + Aliir looks a lot weaker with 2023 Jonas as one of them.

If McKenzie is out for more than a few weeks, I think we need to look at what else could be done.

After McKenzie went down we moved Bergman from wing to defence and be played well.

I'd shift Bergman back and bring in Sinn/Duursma. Whichever one played best for the Magpies.

I wonder if they will punt on Fantasia for Rioli? Probably just Narkle.

No for fanta: he needs to play three or fours games together before being cosidered.
Of course, a bag of five or so would change that.

Posted this in today's game thread but fits here.

Against Carlton at Docklands next week - and they have no (recognised) ruck with both Marc Pittonet and De Koning out due to injury. So no need for a tap ruckman with no mobility as it will leave our mids exposed to a smaller faster centre bounce set up.

So Hayes out. (sorry Schulzy ).

Give Dixon and his peg leg a well earned rest before Collingwood.

Bring in Ollie Lord (who's back from suspension) to rotate with Finlayson in the ruck

And I'm not sure what we do to replace McKenzie if his ankle is something serious but the SANFL form of a couple of players looks pretty good and surely Duursma has done enough to get a spot back in the As.

Narkle stays in. And maybe Burgoyne gets another look with Rioli out for personal reasons.
Well Ken said Jonas would replace McKenzie 😬

If we brought in Jonas, which I think we will, and he stinks it up again, will we have the balls to drop him again? Dropping your captain once is a statement, dropping him twice would essentially be telling him he's done.

I'm worried he comes in, the team performs fine regardless of him due to the fact we're paying Carlton, so he stays in and Collingwood absolutely towel him up the week after.

Many of them boundary throw ins. Something that is not commonplace in SANFL games under the last touch rules.

Which is where Hayes lack of an engine gets most exposed as it was at the end of the second quarter tonight - doubled over and out off puff unable to make the sideline contests. But you saw that as you were there- right? Of course you were.

As a result he required frequent resting on the bench after half time and a one legged Dixon needing to step up to take his place.

Do we risk that against a team with no recognised ruckman? And Dixon likely to be rested. My guess is no.

Again. Let's see what the selection panel thinks. Reckon they know a bit more than you or me.
Nah this line of Hayes took extra time on the bench because he needed it is factually wrong

We sit near the interchange gates and there was at least 3 maybe more occasions in the last half when Sam is trying to get on the field (Ie standing on the boundary waiting) and couldn’t because the play was on the other side of the field etc

His running capacity is well documented but there’s a layer of sauce here that goes beyond….

im pretty sure Charlie is cooked, his last month he has had some impact very early in quarters but after that he's been pretty much invisable afterwards except for seeing him wrestling guys in the goal square. He looks like a guy who the game is passing buy and he just can run to the level needed and thats wihtout an injured leg
