he and Hingey are perfecting it
Did you get any hints during pre season that the coaching panel would be so reluctant to trying any of our recent draftees (maybe always being in the B teams during match sim or stuff like that)? Other clubs have no issue with it, even the top 8 clubs.

BACCS i dont think each of the new boys have yet done enough to deserve selection but Ryan and Edwards are getting better with each outing. Generally all of those boys were in the possibles with Curtin early on getting some probables time. The injury to his knee has severely impacted his development. He ran with a limp for many weeks and still looks restricted to me at times.

Nank and Billie have been our better players but only one game for the past few weeks has not helped their cause.

Nank was in the possibles for a lot of the preseason although his form in training and early games was quite good. His shoulder injury may have had something to do with that.

Hammils form against South was underwhelming.

Were you impressed with Ryan and Curtin against South? I can't see how they would be any worse than Hamill at AFL level

Ryan's last half was of a very high quality. Speed, lovely kicking, good spoiling and sound defensive game. His best game since good pres-season form earlier in the campaign.

Curtin was all at sea in first qr - Mcasey like against Freitag but came back strongly in second half as well when he got more up the ground. I would like to see him play half back. Took some good marks and spoiled well. One spoil in the last qr was special - but it went straight to Hammil - who froze like a rabbit in the headlights and the ball was turned over with a holding the ball decision.

Probably should play the long game with these two just for the moment.

If I missed Michalanney then thats a mistake on my part because I actually think he is one that has been good and consistent but still has a way to go to be considered Elite.
He's bordering on elite in the Crows' backline.
I love Pedlar but again no consistency. He has patches of real determination and is courageous but he disappears for a large chunk of the game.
I Coached a young fella in a Year 12 school team ages ago; about 180cms, built like Michalanney.
He was super-fit and disliked being one-on-one --- hated being stuck in one place --- at that time, I played him as a ruck-rover (now "midfielder") and he was very damaging because he was tough, a real bull, and loved running everywhere driving the ball forward again and again. Ran back and defended too. Game after game, our best player.
I would play Pedlar, give him license, and tell him what I told that kid:
"When we don't have the ball run and keep running, chase and tackle. Anticipate. Sag off a kick behind the play. Run through packs and players and drive the ball forward".
In fact, I'd say the same to Keays, who's a running machine, but he can tag too.
Run everywhere, but be accountable.
A pox on structure/ system. Players like Pedlar should never be assigned to tag or nullify (eg on Stewart vs Geelong). Rankine too.
Let'em run wild and do damage and become an unpredictable headache for other Coaches.
If Fog and TT could play the entire game at their best level and then every week we would produce a different result to what we are doing now. Sadly they just havent lived up to what they promised.
I'd give Fogarty (who has been shackled by roles/system/structure) the same license. I'd ask Burgess to get Pedlar, Rankine and Fog mega-fit and unleash them.
Thilthorpe was headed for a good season until injured.
We'll never know how good until the start of next year after another pre-season.
He'll come back this year but immediately post-injury it won't be the same as when he started this year, so we'll have to wait :sadv1:.

I want Gallant to show me if he’s got it or not. Can he take the next step? Maybe he works well with Fog and Thilthorpe in the long term?
Lively, enjoyable post :thumbsu: .

Re: Gollant, I thought he was going to be a slick-moving, overhead-marking forward. Solid goalkicker.
Showed glimpses, but like a lot of our inexperienced players has lost form in the AFL.
Has he been Nicks-ified? I dunno.
I don't want to write him off even if I have doubts, but Nicks has got to play those kids, as you said.

P.S. Unlike you, I have not enjoyed the last 25 years, except when were contenders (not just making up numbers).
2020 - 2023 inclusive have been a nightmare.
I hope I am wrong, but I don't think Nicks is the man for the job.

Just watched Nicks' Wednesday Presser - it's beyond a joke.

He's too close to the players, he has no perspective. Can't see the forest for the trees.

If all you did was listen to that tripe .. you'd think we were just unlucky.

It's Neil Craig lite. Ick.

Best case scenario is you play the same 23 every week???!?!? Must be great being a young player looking in. Hamill comes in, maybe one other. FFS, exciting times.

I'm happy for one of these two options from here:

(1) I'm completely wrong - Nicks is the guy, he brings us out of the darkness and we make it to the promised land.
(2) We lose every game until he is fired.

Option (3) which I am not happy about, but is probable ... Nicks is not the guy, he stays, we waste another two years in limbo and lose players we cannot afford to lose to real teams.

According to Champion Data we're the 3rd BEST in the comp late in the quarter. I am sure the data is correct, but it bloody well does not feel true

That is because we are always behind and late in the quarter we revert back to our attacking style that we had last year and we start to play much better. Earlier on in the quarter the team is instructed to play this new defensive game style and they all get confused and scared to take any risks.

Selection goes "who's the next guy up with experience?"
