Up until last night, Petrucelle had kicked 1 goal in the past month.

That's why people have been suggesting he's due for a rest. His output had clearly slowed down. It's not a conspiracy theory.

8 disposals and 2.5 tackles a game was his return from rounds 9 to 12.

He was better vs Essendon with 10 touches 2 goals and a tackle, as well as blowing a couple of other opportunities. Probably could've kicked 4.

But with Cameron surprising everyone with his pressure at the top level and kicking 2 himself, Petch could find himself making way due to team balance.

Doubt it will happen personally. I'd give all of Ryan, Petch, Rioli and Cameron a game.

Young players have ups and downs. Small forwards often have dry patches. People were calling for Betts retirement a month ago. Additionally 1 of those 'poor' performances was the Sydney game were everyone was bad.

We seem to be far more strict with our younger players then our older ones.

So looking at Hawthorn, they are a difficult team to predict on line up. This week, they are going:
696163

696165
Stratton has 2 weeks R&R so won't be back next week (that should make Darling happy he has not been that great on Stratton). Wingard is the only top line player with any likelihood of coming back in and he is hardly setting the world on fine.

Roughead is their only genuine KPF (despite being named on HBF) with Gunstan undersized and McEvoy more the ruck resting forward. So if we lose Gov, not a bad week to lose him with Barrass to play on McEvoy and Shoey/Sheppard to play on Gunstan.

I'd go with a tag for Hutchings (either Smith, Scully or JOM).

They have the defensive height to match us with Brand (198cm), Frawley (193cm) and Sicily (only 186cm but would be ok on Darling) with only Sicily likely to run off a forward and head up forward. If we play our full complement of smalls in the forward line of Ryan, Cameron, Rioli, Cripps and Petruccelle, I think we will expose them for defensive foot speed. My thinking is that if NicNat is playing, then he plays 50% in ruck and 50% on the bench. Then we need to decide about Oscar or Hickey. I would personally go Hickey as he was good against Essendon and showed a load more around the ground. It takes some pressure of NicNat although Oscar is doing a pretty good backup ruck role and offers more resting forward.

I would like to see Hurn play on Puopolo just to set a record for the combined thickest thighs.

I have a feeling that this will be a decent time to play the Hawks.

Indeed not a bad time to play them. teams tend to struggle with their captains out.

Out-

Schoey, Petrol (stiff but Rioli offers more through the middle), Allen

In-

Barrass, Rioli, NN

As for Gov, if he gets a week and we don't challenge I will riot! Important player, only a monetary incentive not to challenge (we are the richest club in the league!) and action was in the field of play. Player had the ball when contact initiated. IMG_0899.JPG

Petch has a long long way to go before he is considered a good footballer and this is why they are pumping games into him, he does some very good things and he also disappears for long periods. He is on his learning journey and while we can keep him in the side I think they should.
But I don't think he is close to being in our best 22 when it counts and when no excuses can be offered.
We only need 3 small forwards and we have them in Cripps, Rioli and Ryan.
Just my opinion though.

Masten has to go, he just really offers nothing

He isn't a defensive minded mid who pressures or tackles (unless you count arm waving, then he would be a league leader)

He doesn't hurt you, or even hit, the scoreboard

And for all his vaunted running power, he has never been an accumulator of the ball.

We are far better off without him
Yeah but he’s playing his role, what don’t you get?

Sorry mate, I forgot to mention I was taking the Mickey,
All I ever here on this forum from Masten supporters is he’s playing his role.
Like you I’m stuffed if I know what the role is. I have noticed he’s always there on camera after someone’s kicked a goal for the high five. Maybe that’s his role, the designated team high fiver.
We should add that to the team stat sheets

I’m no Masten lover, I do appreciate he’s been able to forge out a career and win a flag, all power to him, but I didn’t think he was that bad last night?? He even stuck a good tackle. In a team where our game plan revolves around kicking the ball a lot to an open player, someone like him that can run all day and provide an option is useful. I guess a lot of players could do that, but the MC must see something that we all don’t, otherwise he would’ve be playing. I’m going to assume they know what they’re doing, moreso than us on an internet football forum.

Which of his 2 possessions in the 1st half did you like the best?

Roughead on the HBF and Sicily at CHB? What is this team?

and he was only going at 50%, I remember one possession, had two easy options, instead kicked it to a contest, where the Eagle, had a disadvantage, luckily, the ball went over the line, I gather, this was rated as "effective" which meant the other possession went **** up.

Yep and he isn't going to improve in the WAFL. He can simply burst away from everyone at that level. He needs to learn tricks outside of his pace and I think that he can only do that at the AFL level.

Haha, like I said, I’m no Masten lover, but he provides an option (most of the time a short one in the defensive half, which is exactly what our game plan consists of) and again, I’ll take Simmos view over peoples view on here. If he drops him after last nights game, I guess you were right.

Cripps spending more and more time up the ground and on a wing - noticeable last night.

Rioli also spends time in the middle.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Cripps as a permanent wing and Masten out - to create room for another small forward

Ins : Rioli (definite), Naitanui and Barrass assuming they get through Saturday’s game ok

Outs : Not so clear cut and a lot depends on how the MC want to structure up against Hawthorn

Backs - Gov*, Hurn, Shepp, Jetta and Duggan all safe leaving a decision between Schofield and Nelson as the out for Barrass. Think Schofield goes out as we would be too tall otherwise even though he’s been pretty solid.
*Assumes Gov isn’t suspended

Mids - Yeo, Shuey, Sheed, redden, Gaff all locks. One of Hickey or Oallen to come out for Nic- probably Oallen as we’ll need Hickey to still do a large chunk of ruck work especially against Ceglar and McEvoy
We ran with an extra mid this week with Rioli out but one of Hutch or Masten probably makes way - Masten imo unless we don’t identify a specific target for Hutch to tag (unlikely)

Forwards - JK, JD, Cripps and Ryan all safe but one of Cameron or Petch could be unlucky if either
a) Oallen is retained as a pure forward as he was when we’ve played Varkey - personally I think this makes us too tall but that hasn’t concerned the MC in the past so it’s a genuine possibility or
b) We stay with the extra mid to play both Hutch and Masten - can see this happening if we play Schofield over Nelson
Petch ahead of Cameron if one does come out but I hope not - a forward line of Cripps, Ryan, Rioli, Petrucelle and Cameron at the feet of JK and JD could terrorise a Hawthorn backhalf not notes for their leg speed

TLDR is Schofield, Oallen and Masten as my preferred outs. Any other week they’d all retain their spots because they don’t deserve to be dropped but sexual, Willie and the big Fijian returning isn’t any other week

Can we just ban the word Masten from the forum?

There are no “Masten lovers”, the vast vast vast majority of people have him as an out. He was forgettable but fine yesterday, nobody is clamouring to get him more games, how is this still something people feel the need to posture about?

The dick measuring contest for who dislikes Masten the most is so old, and he’s only been back one game. Can we just drop him for good so we never need to have the discussion again?

To be fair he didn’t exactly dominate at WAFL level, still struggled to find the ball there as well. That’s what he has to learn in time. You can have all the pace in the world but it’s of no use to you without the ball. He just needs time to learn to get to the right places.

Jeremy McGovern, West Coast Eagles has been charged with engaging in Rough Conduct against Matt Guelfi, Essendon, during the first quarter of the Round 14 match between the West Coast Eagles and Essendon, played at Optus Stadium on Thursday June 20.

In summary he can accept a one-match sanction with an early plea.

Based on the available evidence, the incident was assessed as Careless Conduct, Medium Impact and High Contact. The incident was classified as a one-match sanction.

Disgraceful. Compared to the existing ones, it can't be medium if he's not injured, and he isn't. Challenge it. No different to Zuurhar which was graded low.

Bellchambers fined for running past the ball and a high hip and shoulder, Redman fined for back-heeling a bloke, Gov suspended for a legal hip and shoulder inside the field of play because a chair was near the boundary? Doesn't add up.
