So many times when teams try to 'stretch the defence' it doesn't really work. I think in the modern game in the forward line/defence it doesn't matter too much. However where I think height is an actual big advantage is in the midfield, tall fast midfielders are amazing.

Considering Neither Lyons not Grigg are setting the world on fire you'd have to wonder if Crouch is really any good. If he is then why isn't he even getting a look in?
Good point. Maybe playing it safe with a youngster that seems a big part of the clubs future. Could say the same about Lever as his Sanfull stats are looking pretty good. I'm in QLD so don't get to see the results. Do you think Crouch isn't performing as well as the reports and stats sat? Genuine question, not trying to be sarcastic.

Wright was one of our better players last week and therefore doesn't deserve to get dropped but before that he looked very close to being out of the side, hence him being subbed out in round 2 and the starting sub in round 3. He will want to put some good games together because it appears he has been one of the last picked in the last three games.

Excuse my ignorance. Yo yo man?
Cam Ellis yo man - sorry bad joke

I said Phil was giving him the opportunity to play his role, I didn't say I knew what the role was :). I was too busy enjoying the Kangas match to work it out. I did try and check his match ups in the Collingwood and Melbourne matches and he didn't seem to be "tagging" a particular defender. I didn't see the Doggies match live but he seemed to be playing the same role as our other forwards (waving goodbye to the Doggie backmen as they ran past him). I will try and check it out on Sunday providing I do not have to retire to the Bar to lessen the pain.
Wish I could be there either way. The bar in a losing game at AO is better than TV and a win... Almost.

My 2 cents worth. Hartigans inability to hit a target has killed our rebound momentum on too many occasions. Our game plan relies too heavily on ball movement out of defence. I dont think Walsh had a choice.

Hartigan needs to learn from Talia in his decision making. Both poor kicks but Talia rarely takes a risky option. most of his turnovers are in the corridor or in front of goal, which make his turnovers look horrid.

Kick long to a tall option on the boundary son! Until we can find a replacement!

Or easy disposal to a better kick like mj, hendo, Laird or anyone!

Agree, tell hartigan to take no risks & stick to basics.

Honestly, I'm not trying to defend the incumbents or argue that they deserve to continue being picked. The fact is that there are several players in our team who are living on borrowed time - when someone better comes along they should find themselves in the SANFL. The fact that none of them show any sign of being displaced by the likes of Lyons/Grigg/Crouch says more about the youngsters than it does about the incumbents.

Again, they're possibly only one game away from being temporarily or even permanently displaced. We have to take into account that Walsh is a rookie coach. He'd also be acutely aware of the disservice that Neeld did himself when going too far the other way. It's understandable that the guys I isolated get first crack. NTRabbit quoted CEY as an example, but he's not. He only leap-frogged other players in the same category in terms of their level of AFL experience. It's not the same discussion point. Reality is that if B Crouch didn't break a bone in his foot, CEY would probably be rolling along the sub, sanfl, sub, roller coaster.

Once more, you use the current games selection as absolute proof that these other guys aren't in the frame and the encumbrances are doing the job. You said the same about Reilly last year. You, and others like you, love to use this weeks selection as proof positive that a certain player isn't even close to being dropped. What you all have in common is acceptance that a certain standard will result in continual selection. It might in a club with a rich history of finishing at and around the bottom of the 8. So historically, you've been right more than you've been wrong. And by a fair margin too. But if we're going to go anywhere, then the benchmarks need to be raised. The players that I've mentioned have proven over the last few years that they rarely perform to a higher level.

Once Crouch, Grigg and Lyons prove they can't either, then that should spell the end of their career at the AFC as well.

I'm pretty sure Hartigan will have been told to stick within his limitations. Unfortunately, I'm a little concerned that one of his limitations is in the brains department.

Would have liked to have seen the Truck parked at West Lakes when it was decommissioned and not on Punt Road personally.

Arguably our best defender ever.

The one player I really notice we are missing this season ... if only we could have Truck of 2 years or so ago out there.

If we're going down that road bring back Harty and Smarty any day of the week

Just hope he doesn't go too hard on them and get them offside. I love listening to him tho, best talker as a coach since Blight, maybe better ... time will tell.

**** that. They need someone to rip them. "I hope he doesn't get them offside". The players do what the coach says, not vice versa.

I reckon Laird is going 3rd man up in any contests with a size mismatch. Kind of like the North game, taking marks in front of the big guys.
I love Laird. He's the one of the most underrated players in the comp. Whenever he does something courageous I always wait for the common taters to mention it but it never happens. Massive rookie selection for us I reckon. Who thought westies would end up doing something useful
