Nah disagree an all counts. As a tagger Hutch was very limited to the players he could tag. He matched up well on the outside leaning mids but other sorta mids he struggled on. Had success against some electric back flankers but he struggled on them too.
I agree. He did his job for us when we needed him but he is past it. To me 18 GF his job on Sidebottom won us the flag.

Disagree...I knew Avishka was/is better than A5 reincarnate!

I don't think any player is immune from criticism. Nelson included. Hate is stretching it at least from my point of view. Good player, improved heaps but still butchers it big time considering our game plan relies heavily on DE on kicking. he is the shakiest in our backline and I think cole has passed him in kicking department.

Gov is our worst kick atm. Guy offers up some shockers.

He is not far off I give you that. However, if you are going to be comparing strengths and weaknesses Gov is by far the better player hence why his strengths, presence and x factor outweigh his shortcomings. the same thing could not be said about Nelson and when Sheppard and Whitherden are back he will be in trouble and should be dropped considering Duggan will most likely spend time at the back as well.

Pretty outdated views. He's no superstar but he isn't as bad as everyone makes out either.
I think the reason Nelson gets so much hate is that he makes similar mistakes to most of our players but he never does anything outstanding to balance it out.
He never really has those moments that make you think "that was a great mark/tackle/kick", so all you remember is the bad pieces of play.

I like Jacko. I think he’s a really solid defender. Goes when it’s his turn, without fail and usually his skills are pretty good. I think we trust him internally to do a number roles we set for him, which is why he’s been a constant in our side the last couple of years.

Whipping boys seem to often fall into that category - solid role player. Often the case the player is just doing what we ask him to do. So sometimes it gets a bit over the top.

Plus, whenever a first year player kicks a goal, or we celebrate as a group he’s ALWAYS the one that comes and jumps over the top. None of this tap on the back and run back to position, he’s always going above. I think he’s well liked in the group, every team needs guys like Jacko.

I agree, but his ball use in my opinion by foot is as good as, if not better than the other defenders. Every defender will turn the ball over (see Hurn last week) but people seem to think he does it with every possession.

Turnovers need to be judged against the degree of difficulty in the kick being executed. I do feel like he isn't as manic over the ball as he used to be, Cole and Duggan show him up in that regard now.

So what does he do consistently well?

Lets see tonight how many positive plays he is involved in that create goals and how many plays he stuffs up that lead to Richmond goals

Nelson is a whipping boy because:

a. He has no outstanding attributes;
b. He makes glaring mistakes, both in fumbling when he’s clear and missing kicks; and
c. It’s easy to imagine someone else playing that role and doing it better.

Despite all that, the main reason is that every team has a couple of whipping boys and he’s the most likely candidate at the moment. Cripps, brander and Cole all get their fair share as well.

Nelson is frustrating because he seems to make the same mistake each week (getting caught holding the ball)…he hasn’t improved in this area…do the coaching staff work with individuals on a known key weakness?

It's what happens. Players get older. Hutch WAS our best tagger and was good in that limited role against specific opponents.
But to be a good tagger you need to be able to stick to an opponent and not give them an inch. When you slow down (age) that becomes harder.
And you are right, his best days are behind him.

But WC do things differently to other clubs. We don't debut and give a run of games to players as readily as others. And when someone is established we are slower to drop players who are out of form or who, in reality, no longer cut it.

And that's where guys like Vardy, Hutch and Cripps become whipping boys. They will never reach the heights (solid role players) they previously have and there may be better or better for the future options available. Nelson is now a better option as a tagger and Langdon is at last showing a bit and may be our next 5 year defensive small forward. Williams has been carrying an injury the last couple of weeks (and become a bit of a whipping boy) but has certainly shown more in his games than 2021 Vards.

Waterman has also been a bit of a whipping boy. I like him and think he offers a fair bit. BUT...
I don't like him in the same team as Allen, JD, JK, Williams, NN and Brander as we have gone at times. We have shown time and time again that when we go in with our B22 individuals (as against our B22 team) we go in too tall, too slow, get killed on the run through the middle and get overrun late in games.

So I'm happy Waterman misses today vs. Richmond when most of the others are fit and ready. I'm not whipping him, it's just that the team looks more balanced without him. And happy that against the Richmond ruck setup Williams gets a week or two to recover from injury and Vardy doesn't come in.

I would disagree. Last year Nelson got holding the ball nearly every time he gathered possession. He was fending off and getting caught.
He has definitely improved in this area. I think he has learned from Hurn, who is a master of getting tackled and then getting a ball up.

I swear my little sister could tackle Hurn and there would be a ball up. No knock on Hurn. He is great at getting a ball up when he has had no prior opportunity.

Ive been watching this closely this year with Nelson. He is not breaking tackles but he is no longer regularly getting holding the ball.

Lol Waterman is in.

We are definitely suffering from our poor drafting. Coach feels obligated to play all these tall players.
