Collingwood's 2012 Draft Prospect Talk - Picks 18, 19, (updated), 20, 38

I'd be surprised if we didn't pick up a key forward this or next year considering we cut Dawes. We have very little depth outside of Cloke with Lynch (~two years left?) and Paine the only back ups. Considering the time it takes for key position players to develop I think we need to recruit a forward a succession to Lynch in the medium term and Cloke in the long term.

Moore is a highly rated KPF we get next year correct?

Between him paine gault richmond i think we have enough young KPF prospects for the moment to not pick one up unless they are a big slider

AFL says there won't be a 10-1 countdown at the draft this year. Will go back to what it was a few years ago - starting at #1 and going up.
7/11/12 4:36 PM

Finally the AFL realises the suspense isn't who goes #1 but who slips!
Nice, counting down to 1 is boring as bat shit. The media usually know who is going at pick 1 anyway. It was a strange idea and I hope it never comes back.

We will see moore in the VFL next year? awesome. Definitely will boost interest

No we wont
he is doing year 12 next year...and hopefully playing championships etc..he will only turn 17 in 2013, not 18 until 2014.
if we agree with Moore, the afl, etc ie: if we commit to him we can develop him in the vfl viney style in 2014
then draft him end of 2014
Moore wont be eligible to play afl until the 2015 season

Agree the Morons at AFL House have Figured it was Stupid. Hella Luya

I like the idea of Vlastuin/Hrovat/Membrey. Vlastuin can play defender and become a mid, Membrey can play forward and become a mid. Good versatility.

In the likely event of Vlastuin being gone would hope to see best available mid. I feel like the Club may shy away from the interstaters after recent homesickness contract sagas with Leon and Wellers.

Melbourne losing pick 4 would spice things up & is probably what they deserve, they dicked us about with pick 13 (which might have netted Valstuin) and Scully was never worth 2 first rounders anyway. I'm also concerned that in all the phantom drafts Carlton end up with a very good player. Hopefully Carlton get stripped of pick 11 ... for being Carlton.

Jesse Lonergan has been often talked about as an option for us. Didn't play much in the champs and only for Tassie so limited exposure for the causual watcher, but this video gives a glimpse. Is a nice looking unit.

At present I have a top 10 of:

Power rankings 2012 (This represents where I rate players in this draft rather than where I expect them to land):
------------------Potential A-Graders--------------------
(Don’t be surprised if O’Meara and Whitfield don’t all things said and done develop into the best of this group. This top region is much more even than advertised and I see very little separating this group)
1. Joe Daniher (Ess – F/S)
2. Jaeger O’Meara (GC – 17 Y/O)
3. Lachlan Whitfield
4. Brad Crouch (Adel – 17 Y/O)
5. Jimmy Toumpas
6. Jack Viney (Melb – F/S)
7. Jackson Macrae
8. Brodie Grundy
9. Jake Stringer
10. Nick Vlastuin
------------------Potentially high level AFL players--------------------
(Again this next group are all pretty evenly rated in my mind and like with that top 10 quality group little separates the top from the bottom here)
11. Dayle Garlett
12. Oliver Wines
13. Nathan Hrovat
14. Tom Clurey
15. Lachlan Plowman
16. Taylor Garner
17. Nathan Wright
18. Troy Menzel
19. Sam Mayes
20. Jonothan O’Rourke
21. Josh Simpson
22. Ben Kennedy
23. Jed Anderson (Hawthorn – via GWS zone)
24. Tom Lee (St Kilda – via GWS)
25. Tim Membrey
26. Jason Pongracic
27. Jesse Lonergan
28. Kamdyn McIntosh
29. Matthew McDonough
30. Kristian Jaksch

Of those I have in 1st round consideration who could be within our realistic range are (in bracket is chance of availability): Stringer (unlikely but possible), Vlastuin (unlikely but possible), Garlett (chance), Hrovat (likely), Clurey (chance), Garner (unlikely but possible), Wright (likely).

After this I would be more looking towards the 2nd round with: Membrey (unlikely but possible), Pongracic (chance), Lonergan (unlikely but possible), McIntosh (unlikely but possible), McDonough (likely).

My order will likely be different again this time next week but just what I have at present and what I'd be looking at from a Collingwood perspective with those 4 selections.

Josh Simpson is probably the bandwagon you want to get on, but there other pacy options predicted to be around our pick: Dayle Garlett, Ben Kennedy, Nathan Wright, Jesse Lonergan, Matthew Haynes and Nick Graham are the ones that BF groupthink tends to project around the 15-30 range.
I want (of the guys that may fall) Ben Kennedy. That is all.

It has to be remembered that a top ten in the draft is not the best ten young players in order. All clubs have different weaknesess and different needs.

In fact we should be talking about "first round" not top ten. Theres no difference between pick 10 and pick 11 except the ladder position of the teams with the picks.
Not so much with FA.

Of the relative speedsters Garlett I like because he can win his own ball and has that combo inside/outside game.

Wright is that other and off a back flank is an option I'm increasingly warming to. Very athletic (good leaper, and nice pace) but what I like is his sidestep then that ability to break past and away to really generate that meaningful run and drive. It really sets him apart off a back flank. Also his midfield capability excellent and can step into the midfield, win his own ball and find the footy so he is that other I'd really favour over the Simpson's/Kennedy's who excite with their pace but probably haven't improved enough this past season. Wright really has plenty of Dangerfield when he was in his u18 and played as a back flanker. Could just as easily make that transition into the midfield - just without being quite that same level dominant player.

Garlett's Highlight Videos are Great and IF he gets to our Pick and with the Off-Field Red Flags there is a Strong Change we could take him because of the 3 1st Rounders we have.

Video Highlight:

I'm a youtube "recruiter" if you call it that.

Don't want Garlett do want Kennedy. Obviously some people are in the know.

Garlett has the more complete game for mine. Has a much better outside game and probably the better inside game of the two. More duel sided. Better decision maker under pressure and in congestion just doesn't make any mistakes getting through trafic and always using it really well and easily. Just does everything really naturally well, gets plenty of it and produces. Bit like Alex Fasolo a couple of years ago could be that slider who came under question for personality and can be had a good 10-15 selections lower than he probably deserves and has the production to back it up.
Garlett for me if he keeps focused as he has been this year (all he needs is good coaching staff, leadership group and culture - which we have and will benefit moving interstate and he'll be fine) he can become close to the best player in this draft and very likely a big time difference maker. Can really find a role in his own right for our team as a guy who can rotate as a inside/outside mid and off a forward flank.

Kennedy has that pace, that explosive kick and the ability to win his own ball as the footage suggests and with those attributes as with Simpson it does catch the eye, but his pressure game isn't good enough for a player at his size, then outside game really quite poor. Additionally I've been pretty disappointed with the lack of improvement he has shown this year. Was a top 5 quality prospect coming into the season but has dropped down some and feels like he has maxed out. Hasn't developed endurance as hoped and is the same player he was this time last year with an ok but not great inside game and no outside game - and looking more like an explosive small forward without a particularly impressive pressure and tackling game which he really should with his pace.
Good player and has something to work with but I wouldn't be spending a 1st round selection on him when much more complete players are available who could more easily find a role in our team. Just no need for more small forwards. He'd be competing with Blair for that position in the team and don't really see the point with Blair already fine as that small forward who can play through the midfield when required.

Thanks, what it sums up for me, is you can't be a youtube recruiter.

I don't see the faults in Kennedy, looks like a better version of Blair, who I think of more as a mid.

I see Garlett more as a young Ben Reid, only in he has that "deer in the headlights" look to me.
That is ok for a KPD but I don't like it in a midfielder. What you see as picking the right option I see as indecisive. I think he'll be found out a bit (still good) at AFL level.

Warming to Lonergan for on of our first 3 picks, from everything I've seen (purely on a computer screen) he looks to have that inside ball winning ability with break away speed. these attributes are pretty tempting, thats how many elite midfielders make a name for themselves. Look at Judd and Swan, win the ball and have the ability to break out of the pack.

As well as this geez he tested well, looks athletic as well, and at 184cm/86kg looks the right build to make it in the big time.

I'm of the thought that we go for a mix of players with our first 3 picks (an inside mid, outside mid and KP prospect). if we snagged Lonergan, Simpson/Gartlett and then Membrey/Shaw/Jacksch geez I'd be over the moon.

Your thoughts on Kennedy as a Blair type is about right. He is that more explosive, more powerful kicking version. His inside game is not to that same level as that of Blair and doesn't get in and dirty as much and like with Blair has no outside game. So he can be an AFL level player who can find a role but he is another of a large number of what we already have a real surplus of in forwards.

I don't see the deer in the headlights at all with Garlett and I think this is where our views differ a fair bit. In traffic is very evasive and has an awareness of who is around him, what is coming and can pretty easily dodge, weave and then use it well by hand or foot or speed away. He just has that natural evasiveness where it just doesn't matter how much pressure he is under in a similar way to Andrew Krakouer where he can find and create that extra space like few others can.

Deer in the headlights was a wrong call. It's something about when he has time to think I'm not convinced.
Not even that, call it a gut feel.
