Review Dees v Carlton: the Good, the Bad and the Fugly

Thought Jetta was outstanding especially in the first. Fair chance we would of been down at halftime if it wasn't for him.

Was at the game with a Canadian who was at is his first game, doesn't know much about the game and knows no players, he's favourite player now is Jetta, he was saying this guy must be the best defender in the comp and one of the biggest superstars.

GOOD
  • 2 and 0 baby!
  • Jetta was excellent. When he crunched Kruezer by going harder and lower than him in that contest in the 4th was tough/inspirational/hilarious.
  • Garlett played well and we truly needed him to, his goals were all very important and timely for us
  • Oliver second ripper game for the year. Having 5 touches in the first 3 min's of the game when Carlton had only managed 6. Beautiful.
An overall good: Most players would have had what we/the club/they would consider to not be their best day and well below the output we want on a consistent basis. Carlton were also not a rabble and brought very good defensive structure and intensity in the contest (particularly centre clearances). A Midfield of Kruezer, Gibbs, Murphy and Cripps is not to be scoffed at. While it seemed early on as though we could have blown them out of the water they held fast and fought back. The fact they hit the lead is disappointing but it is comforting to know that we stuck to our guns in terms of gameplan/style and were able to grind out a win - an important win for the club.

BAD
  • Our run and effort to create leads, pressure the ball carrier, run in waves when transitioning the ball was poor. Carlton got cut up on turn overs the week before so maybe we just expected them to give us the ball at half back so we could cruise through the field into our 50? We still won but we can't be picking and choosing which games we go all out for.
  • Over possession, particularly early
  • Our plan of having 2 extra backs means we are vulnerable in the case where WE get a quick clearance and bang it forward. Needs to be addressed.
Think the above stems from us underrating Carlton and they set up better than we probably expected.

UGLY
  • Hogan letting his frustration lead to a cheap shot - direct that aggression toward the ball and take a pack mark next time thanks pal cheers
  • Lewis as well - reckon both he and Hogan got a fair bit of attention off the ball and they let frustration get the better of them (still think the penalties were excessive but eh). Lewis at least could arguably have been trying to "change momentum" by starting a scuffle. Hogan's was just dumb.
  • Carlton saying both Cripps and Rowe are in doubt for this week give me a ****ing spell. If either of them miss I'll be shocked. Pussies.

The FUgly - Losing Lewis and Hogan

The bad - Not being able to cope with the Blues flood in the 2nd and 3rd quarters

The good - Bruising contested footy in the last quarter, even though we were a much younger team the Blues couldn't go with us

Something that i noticed at the game is that your forwards pressed too far up the ground and once you won the contest you had no one to kick too. Forcing you to handball through traffic and making the forwards burn extra stamina and the lack of lead up marks was also really disappointing.

Is there a new rule at your club that you can't kick for goal 35m out from goal?

Can't kick from outside 30m, must handball to someone closer to goal.

Good observation. I think what you're talking about was mentioned by Petracca in his post match interview on 3AW. He talked about the forward line being too 'stretched' and they tried - particularly in the last - to be in better positions for the midfield to kick to.

Think it was less a team directive and probably better play from Carlton to get our forward sucked into the contest while they set up how they liked.

Helps when carlton flood their backline with talls and Hogan, Gawn and Weids are all standing together

You've oversimplified a bit. The actual rule is: must have an uninterrupted chain of at least 29 handballs prior to having a shot from within 30m.

Combining that with Jeffy only within 80m of goal taking on 3 defenders at all times as a tactic didn't seem to be working well for us did it?

I did seem to notice number 7 from Melbourne in the Lewis Incident was that Viney ?

Are you Craig Jennings?

It was an ugly win. But wendropped those games last year. The way we played in the last shows we're maturing. We had a younger and less experienced games wise side on the day again.

Very disappointed in Hogan and Lewis.

Jetta and Tmac were immense down back and Oliver and Jones huge in the middle. Gawn again had a good game.

Jeffy was great to.

Did I dream it or did Oliver contest the ruck at a centre bounce at one point in the second half??

Yep got the hit out too haha
