If he was the deep forward he wouldnt have been there. Cant believe we have him doing the Petty donkey work. Absolutely ******ed stuff. Playing talls for the sake of a stupid structure that makes us worse. Fritsch was the best hit up option high last night.
It’s Joel Smith time. However, wouldn’t surprise me if Goodwin has T Mac, BBB and Schache ahead in the pecking order.

Does he make the side better? JVR pushed up the ground coz TMac is there. Tell me he couldn't have done what TMac did last night if he was the deep forward. Probably doesnt give away those two free kicks in defense either.
With Petty out I think Goodwin will keep picking a second tall to play with JVR. I don’t necessarily think it’s ideal, I think the midfield really needs a mighty rocket and I think we need a truck load more from our small forwards.

He buggered up a bit. I agree.

Happy to throw Goody under the bus for this loss. He had a shocker. It all started with the selections. Salem should have played VFL. He doesn't warrant auto senior selection and it showed.

Then he doesn't have any balls by playing Salem high half forward. He puts Fat Gus in the middle (who was just starting to find form.down back) and replaces him with Vanilla Salem who yet again had zero impact on the game.

Played Trac forward for far too long when we were getting smashed in the middle. No surprises our third quarter momentum was when Trac was on ball.

The one bloke who could maintain high skills in the wet, Kozzy, he hardly played on ball.

How about putting Vines on Butters after quarter time? Or put it on Riv to go with him. Fn anyone to play on him closely..was clearly evident Butters was going to be their match winner halfway through the first quarter.

There's several other things that Goody could have done but didn't, but he thinks rotating a couple of different names through centre bounces is change enough to turn our form around from mid last year. Nope. Our clearance work is still pathetic, our ball movement into the forward half is terrible and our pressure for some reason just isn't as good as the better teams. It's quite evident the better teams know exactly how to beat us. Shark our tap(we always win the hit outs yet nearly always lose clearances) or pressure our poor kicking mids, extra defender down back, run it through the corridor, lower the eyes forward to nullify May/Lever. We're not forcing teams out wide anymore.

Spot on. Goody gets outcoached nearly every game, shows a high degree of inflexibility, and often makes strange selection calls.

I'm willing to stick my neck out here and say maybe it's time for a conversation about Goody (and the assistants)... He got us a flag and that was amazing, but we have looked stagnant since, many players going backwards, forward and mid structure seems broken, and quite frankly we are not fun to watch.

Hello Simon.

I hope this post finds you well.

While I am sure you're deep into the LEARNINGS of this loss, I'd like to highlight certain LEARNINGS for your attention.

Please never play Angus Brayshaw in the midfield again. Play Kozzie there. Or Rivers. Or Salem. Or Sparrow. Or my overweight, gout-afflicted uncle Bob. Just not Angus.

Please also consider playing to the conditions. I know the rain can be wet and scary, but sometimes you just need to embrace the moist chaos.

Finally, consider developing a forward 50 entry strategy that doesn't involve plonking it on top of a pack and hoping for the best. Do you remember LEADS? I like LEADS. Consider how we could utilise more LEADS in the game plan.

Your friend in starch, DP.

I agree that Goodwin deserves flack particularly for Brayshaw in the middle and doing fa about Butters as two terrible blunders along with team selection.

However, we could have a coaching panel comprised of Smith, McHale, Barassi and Clarko all at their peak and we’d still be mince if the midfield gets scudded like that.

Those 3 would of sent someone out to belt the crap out of Butters . Can't do that anymore . Very poor coaching to let him run amok .

We butchered our possessions, firstly in defence when under the pump. With the now traditional Lever intentional-fumble... has become the norm for our defenders.
With an intentional fumble to around the ankles, and then a scramble for the then loose-ball, hoping for a stoppage.

This is coming back to haunt us, now that opposition defenders are playing closer attention to Lever; and our defenders. This in turn effects our disposal when we get the ball away, transferring pressure up to the wing, to our next line players.

The Power worked overtime to stop us marking the high ball out of the back half, between the Arcs.

This is where our game broke down; then we failed to connect with our forwards and smalls.

I’d love to see what another top coach could do with us. We won a flag because Goody had us absolute buzzing for a season and we were fitter than everybody else.

There’s rarely been a sign of any tactical nous.
We cannot keep changing our game-plan every 5 minuutes.

Stick to the plan or otherwise our players will all be not connecting. change personel but not gameplan. Or we will be a bunch of sheep.

Needed a big game from Gawn against a cooked Lycett and he didn't deliver. Even with the rain, for the amount of times we targeted him he took zero marks - Port's talls aren't much chop.

He looked sore and Port went after him, but nobody really flew the flag and went in to retaliate when there was a few opportunities to.

Next week Gawndy v Darcy/Dogga will be a great battle. Will need our pair to bounce back.

Lycett owns his soul. Has done since the prelim in 2018

The cliff is coming for several - I agree with you there. But I still feel like we should be contending this year, but the effort and intensity isn't high enough. Last night was a perfect example. Poor in the first half, and then suddenly they flick the switch in the 3rd and they completely outplay the opposition. Then in the last quarter, the same level wasn't maintained - all due respect to Port for the comeback, of course. But we have a superior team to Port, even with certain weaknesses. We just didn't will it to a win like we would have 2 years ago. Gawn allowing himself to be hassled, and his teammates allowing him to be hassled felt emblematic of the lack of mongrel in our team this year. We haven't even played a lot of the better teams yet, so it's going to be a confronting time ahead.
Agree re intensity. The difference between the 3rd and the rest of the game was so stark. Really can't afford to not show up like that and back on us clicking eventually.

All the big lumps like Pittonet, Hickey etc do. Hates the physicality

That's ****ing stupid analysis. Yeah Steven May should run from FB to go push someone then have a goal kicked over his head. If Gawn doesn't wanna stand up for himself then why should anyone else

Tell me you didn't read the article without telling me you didn't read the article...

Couldn't agree more. Those comments from King were so dumb. Imagine the outrage if half the team went to remonstrate with the Power players and we leaked goals as a result.

Not the first time a Port player has run into Gawn off the ball . Meh .
I got a different vibe (based on nothing) from the Sat night post match from Goodwin. I wonder if a line coach suggested tagging Butters but Goody overruled it . Doesn't matter now .
Would not be surprised if Harmes comes in for a run with role too.

Did you read it?

He didn't really say anything like that, in fact he said: “Steven May had the opponent (Lord) that did that to Max jog back to him – and did nothing. That is not the Melbourne that I know."

Pointed out Trac, Clarry and Gus all saw what was happening and didn't do anything, at any stage during the game.

He also said: “I was really disappointed for Max that he was left on an island by senior, core players who should’ve brought more physicality.”

Do you disagree with that? I certainly don't, and I reckon there'd be a fair bit of revisionism going in if people who posted on game day here didn't think that at the time.

How about instead of running over to help out Max, who clearly doesn't need the help, we run to actually defend opposition players. The lack of defensive purpose is embarrassing. That's why I'd like Harmes back in to take Andrew Brayshaw or Serong this week to actually show his team mates that defending is still relevant in todays game.

Are sheep well known for changing their gameplan every 5 minutes? I would have though the opposite if anything.
