He's officially stepped down according to the AFL website. He will only play a minor role in recruiting going forward. Simon Murphy and Andrew Mackie taking over splitting the role.

Doesn't get to do his job like other recruiters these days. Must not be fun knowing you can't touch the top 20 in the draft most years.
Anyway we'll be right. We're a well run club these days and look after and don't alienate people.
Wouldn't be surprised if both Cook and Wells stay on casually/ part time for the transition.

Wow, he started at the club in 1984??? Now I finally know who to blame for stuffing up our only #1 draft pick back in 1990!

37 years is a freaking long time, and don't blame him for wanting to take a decent break. 100% agree that they should be erecting a statue once he finishes up. Based on the bits and pieces over the past few years, it seems like Troy has been sorta-kinda groomed as his successor?

Better start melting the bronze if this is true and get the Wells mould out.

Statue coming in hot.

Hope to god its not true yet.

GO Catters

Mitch Cleary reporting he's stepped away but will have some input.

His role will be split between Mackie, Simon Murphy and Scott Selwood

1994, I thought

Grew up with Wellsy and he has always been a straight shooter, totally decent person. Hope you land how you want to mate, and keep involved in the club somehow. Couldn't agree more with the sentiments that there is a major leadership shift going on at the club, and its all the more reason for the club to avoid Sutherland having any role at all costs. His track record is terrible as a leader of people and cultures, and a house brick could have negotiated the TV rights deal he did, which is his claim to fame. Couldn't be a greater contrast between someone like Stephen Wells and Sutherland.

Day was always coming, what a gem he's been for the club.
I REALLY hope he was well paid, particularly the last 15 years or so...
Start the statue plans now.

I've heard that he turned down a contract from the club years ago and refused to get paid big bucks.

Whether that's true or not.

Wells was the best.... 20 years ago

The game has gone past him and we need another recruiter for the modern times.

If he does leave, we all thank him for his contribution and his role in our premierships and we wish him well in his future endeavours.
Is that a joke? Wells had heaps to work with in terms of picks 20 years ago, today he gets a pick in the 30s every year, once in the 20s of he's lucky

According to the AFL article, Wells has stepped down but the club believe he'll return to the club to work in some capacity and we'll have 4 staff stepping into his shoes covering the various aspects of his role

- It's understood officials at the Cats believe Wells will return to a working capacity in the club and still form part of the list management team, albeit in a reduced capacity compared to previous years.

- Triple premiership defender Andrew Mackie and Cats football operations and compliance manager Simon Murphy will share responsibilities managing the club's list and be overseen by head of football Simon Lloyd.

- And Talent ID manager Troy Selwood and fellow recruiter Liam Woodland will take the lead on the Cats' recruiting.

- The Cats' current list management team includes Wells, Mackie, Murphy, Lloyd, coach Chris Scott and Brian Cook, who will finish in his role as chief executive at the end of 2021.

So if you're not completely sold on future recruits, it's on Troy ;)

Nah it’ll be Scott fault as usual with some around here

Yeah, but at the same time, if you're trading away draft picks for mature players, hard to complain when you're the guy doing it.
