Review Good, bad, the gallant shat loss - R4 vs Melbourne 2024

Well I came, I saw, I am not nearly as disappointed as I thought I would be.

The sort of good: we won two quarters (first and last). Kick straighter in that first quarter and who knows? I thought Soligo was brilliant and Keane had the game of his life. Dawson and Tex had better games.

What was it with the umpiring? They may not have got many but I swear everyone they did get lead to a shot on goal. And the ones they missed for us!!! (Racheles run down holding the ball tackle).

We are devoid of confidence but there are glimpses and passages of play that tell me we aren’t that far away.

So, disappointing we didn’t get a win but completely surprised that it wasn’t the shellacking we all thought it would be.
It’s catching, I got it last night aswell…… it’s Adealaideitis

1) Good sides don't finish 10th.
2) Top 10 pick for 1.2 goals a game and a couple of really damaging disposals isn't very good. Maybe one day once he becomes accustomed to playing in the middle and we can get some players that aren't losers then we can get the proper value out of him.

I can't see what you're quoting but that's a good thing.

This is a really interesting post

It shows that Melbourne had more stoppage wins in the midfield and half forward that resulted in scores. Even though we won center clearances many of our clearances resulted in turnovers (6 turnover clearances from center bounce!)

Also shows the difference in quality of forward 50 entry. We took our entries from further back and especially when coming from the wing these entries were usually turnovers. In contrast Melbourne worked the ball deeper and had far fewer direct entry turnovers. Just 4 turnover inside 50s for Melbourne versus 13 for us

Just dropping in from the Pies side of things to say I thought Mark Keane was exceptional (he was great last week too). I'm glad he's playing such good footy for you guys.

The "free kick" he conceded to Petty was abysmal umpiring – but it showed how impressive he's become. He effortlessly shifted a seasoned AFL tall, completely did him in judging the flight of the ball, and beat him hands-down in a marking contest where Petty was actually initially favoured by the kick.

I hope he keeps dominating down back for you. Big fan.

lol the umpires have been on our side all season

Crouch 30 disposals, just 10 kicks and only 107 meters gained, 67% time on ground, quite the game!
Crouch is slowing reverting to his old form.

He has gone back to the plan where he accumulates disposals by demanding the short 15 m kick off people on the wing. Given he has a shorter kick, and takes time before then dumping the ball down the line, that mark and kick he gains, actually makes us worse off than if the guy with the ball just kicked long from where he was.
When he first came back in the side, it was clear he had been instructed to stop doing this. Obviously it was part of the memory wipe we had over summer though.
H needs to be read the riot act again. Get your own ball, stop looking for cheap stats and attack as soon as you get it. If not - back to SANFL you go.

I'm gonna need a bigger coffee!

I'm a big fan of their new visualisation format. The only problem is that you need to zoom into the high-res image to make sense of some of the images.

A couple of things that have been consistent with Adelaide this year:
  • 'Stoppage opportunity' (ie. where the stoppages are on the ground) generally favours Adelaide. but their attack from stoppage is garbage. Adelaide get it into the forward 50 and try to keep it there (which isn't a bad thing with Rankine et al around the ball), but other teams go into forward 50 and score.
  • Adelaide generate an above average number of interceptions that aren't particularly useful to them. In contrast the interceptions they concede generate a lot of attacking momentum for the opposition.
Someone else did some analysis on the forward 50 entries from these graphics and Adelaide have by far the worst turnover rate on inside 50s.

Not good enough, but clearly our best performance for the year against possibly the most in form side in the comp.

We came into this game as the most underperformed and out of form side in the comp so to finally show anything at all, for me was a bit encouraging at least.

Zip - 4 sheesh. Three of the teams we've played are currently top four ( not just because they've played us) and two of those are undefeated. Dees have won 4 of 5

Carlton next week at Marvel - the only other side in the comp to be undefeated in the first 3 games:(

Being so far out of form playing hesitant stop start football, it's been a sh!tful fixture for us, and is a fluke of course, not contrived by the AFL.

With Crows' current malaise, selection, key injuries, awful game plan, it's been a perfect storm of shitness. I reckon by the relative closeness of our losses we might've limped over the line against one or two of the comp's other struggling teams. At least we haven't been given false hope.

Finals are way gone but soon we'll play teams that are beatable by our standard, and we'll move up the ladder to find our rightful position in the mid to high bottom 10. Yay Crows. :(

Yes, I hate football now.

We as a club need to decide now the season can't be saved with finals all but impossible it's more important to finish low enough to get a top 4 pick, and we need an elite mid, quick with skills.

Finishing 10th-13th is not going to help us!

Picking Curtin and Dowling will flush it either way.

1 free kick in the F50 is worth 10 on the wing.

How many set shots from free kicks did Melbourne get gifted last night? How many did we get?

Set shot free kicks don't mean they were incorrectly paid.

Apart from the soft Keane one, all of them were clumsy.

Melbourne defenders are far better drilled, experienced, disciplined and most importantly ABOUT 3% OF OUR FORWARD 50 ENTRIES PUT OUR FORWARDS IN POSITIONS WHERE THEY COULD EVEN TRY AND EARN A CHEAP FREE KICK

Using umpires as an out for any of our losses this year, even as the most minor of reasons, is about as single-brain celled, crayon muncher as you can get.

I think our game plan/style of play was done in crayons.
