What was the deal with Marlon Motlop when he was at Port?

He seems to have blossomed at Swan Districts this year. Here is a list of his games playing League in the WAFL. Averaging 23 poss a game, including about 29 per game over the last 5 rounds.

Elite junior, ripped up the U16 championships before missing a year of footy with serious injury (might've blown out a knee, can't remember) and was pretty much drafted off the strength of that form and no doubt his bloodlines.

Just couldn't put it together after a smashing end to 2008 when he played in two wins, found a lot of ball in superfluous roles and snared a GOTW nomination. After that he just stagnated. When he wasn't injured he was underwhelming at North Adelaide before the inevitable chop.

Can see Choco taking him to Breakfast Point for the inevitable renaissance.

I bet there were a few pats on the back after we snared Phillips. On the plus side, he has technically lasted longer at Port Adelaide than Krakouer has at Gold Coast.
Not me. I said from day one he was sh it.
Said he scored with the woman in the photo, but he was a serious dud.
More premature than my wedding night

Most others did too

10 Untouchables:
Brad Ebert
Jay Schulz
Hamish Hartlett
Travis Boak
John Butcher
Robbie Gray
Matthew Broadbent
Jackson Trengove
Chad Wingard
Jarrad Redden

Like to keep as still uncertain but would trade if right offer came along
Andrew Moore
Jasper Pittard
Matthew Lobbe
Brendon Ah Chee

Everybody else bar the obvious delists is tradeable.

i know 8+ names sounds like alot to cull but i reckon we have the opportunity to add players who will be ready to play and while they may not make it at least they havent run their race at afl level and could come on for us.

byron sumner- wingman speedy long kick
marschall- hbf described as a very good kick
jolly- young athletic mid.
raikiwasa- 3rd tall/ kpd
tom lee- kf/kpd

any player delisted by his club is a free agent and therefore can choose his destination. im unsure but i think sumner probably left on his own accord so has to be draft/ psd/ rookie.

in any case all these players will be available in either late draft/ psd/ rookie. i think they could very well be an upgrade on many players in those 35-40 spots on our list. all would be physically ready to step up so dont leave us short on bodies if we delist a whole bunch of our spuds. all these players could be convinced that port is the place to be if you want both opportunity and to be part of a teams rise rather than joining a team thats up now and be there for the fall. all these players suit a need for us.

ill also add these guys who should be available to us in the draft ie, they are probably not going to go early.

mcdonough- strong goal smart
spencer white- big key forward.
irra- fast outside long kick
broomhead- allround mid
j ballard- def/ mid
montgomry- rebounding defender
obrien- 193cm kf
tim sumner-187cm. sounds similar in descriptions to ahchee
t mackayy- inside mid

not to mention its supposed to be a deep draft for key defenders.

to be honest there is more than a dozen players ( with the other list above) we could add to our list with psd/ rookie and 3rd/4th round national draft picks that ild rather have than the last dozen on our current list. i reckon there are gonna be half a dozen teams who will not even use their 3rd or 4th round picks this draft, and while some may still hold them i reckon we might be able to pry them away cheaply.

One bad year does not make a bad player make. Just look at Jacob Surjan and Kane Cornes (whether you like Kane's gamestyle or not, you can't say that he didn't go backwards in 2011 and you can't say that his 2012 hasn't been better). Would take.

I laughed at that article saying that Surjan is under the pump but none of Logan, Thomas or Rodan are.

"Brent's body is sound, his mind is good, he wins contested footy and he would be a good on and off-field leader for a young side, which Port is."

Moloney, who won Melbourne's best and fairest award last year, is certain to explore free agency after failing to command a regular spot under new coach Mark Neeld.

Sounds good.

The contested possession and clearance king - two areas the Power desperately needs to improve in

No.

Port has boldy declared it would be a big player in the first year of free agency, with list manager Jason Cripps - who has put himself off limits to the media as he compiles his hit-list - working overtime to attract some experience and talent to Alberton.

Hope thats a joke.

In a way, he's right. We don't need more contested possession type players in the side. What we do desperately need to do is get players who can win contested ball but who can also do other things well, so we can move on the one-dimensional hardnuts who can't do anything else like Thomas, Logan and Cassisi who are currently clogging up our side. Moloney is one of those players, or at least he has been for the vast majority of the career. If we can get him even halfway back to the form he showed in 2011 he'll be an instant upgrade on any of those three.

I'm sure it's not what he meant because Capel is a moron who still thinks our problems now are the same as they were in 2009 like the lazy hack journalist he and everyone else at the Crapvertiser is, but in a way he's right.

He is better than Thomas. Don't know if that means he should get a game or not though

Always thought Moloney could play, but has also always had question marks too. Why did Geelong trade him? (this was before their era of dominance). Now after a BnF year he's on the outer at Melbourne. What's his problem?

Geelong traded him to Melbourne to get a first rounder for Ottens

On Moloney: thought he was only effective with a winning ruck (ie Jamar) but found to be wanting when it wasn't so?

Hes a good player and id take him, but im not sure hes the player we need to be honest. Ialways see him as the player I thought Matt Thomas would become....a hard nosed inside mid who can win plenty of the ball and win plenty of clearances.

Hes gonna be 29 before he plays a game, hes only played 20 games or more in a year 3 times in 10 years and I highly doubt we'd get 4 'good' years out of him...maybe 40 games i reckon.

Im also not sure that hes the player we should be targetting. Our contested possession and clearance rating is actually quite good. Where we struggle is inside 50s (3rd bottom) and disposal efficiency (bottom). Im not sure that getting another inside mid is going to help improve our disposal efficiency which is what kills us at the moment.

As I said, i'd take him, but if hes going to be our trump card signing, then we've been barking majorly up the wrong tree.

Looks like another 'Renouf' type recruit to me. Recruiting a 28/29 year old player always has some element of risk but I don't think he is a risk worth taking. I would rather rebuild our club with a younger player.
Renouf is 22? 23?

If its a choice between Chaplin for a good draft pick or Chaplin for Moloney + Monfries + Jordan Russel + Chris Knights, draft pick wins (Not in the eyes of Cripps tho).

I have a feeling we are going to make more bad decisions when drafting/trading comes around this year.
