Turns 33 in December, was already contracted through to 2025, but I'm sure signing for a further 2 years through to 2027 is a smart decision... Sounds like a bit of damage control to tell the fans all is ok

100% damage control.

Tries to set a tone and calm the narrative about everything being on fire.

They need as much as they can get.

Looking at the ladder crows in bottom 4 with 34 points and % over 100. That has to be unusual after round 22.
Its quite unusual, Suns last year headed into the last game of the season with 36 points and around 92%, but other than that it gets grim for teams who had the most points in the bottom 4 heading into the last game of the year over the past few non compromised seasons.

2022 Bombers 28 /2021 Crows 24 /2019 Swans 28 /2018 Lions 20 /2017 Blues 24 points.

You would have to go all the way back to 2007 when the Bulldogs headed into the last game of the season (in a 22 game season) on 38 points but only 85.50%.

If the Crows finish bottom 4 with 34 points and over 100% (means they need a win over Sydney) that would make them the first team to do that in the AFL era.

In fact it means they are the first team to do that since Melbourne in the 1984 season where they finished bottom 4 and went into the last game on 36 points with a percentage of around 104%.

Do we think rankine would have made the team if he played 16 games?

You could argue that Houston has cost rankine some coin (most contracts have AA bonuses attached).

You could also argue that rankine cost himself the coin by being suspended

He would have definitely made the squad and he was a favourite for a spot as a small forward - averaging 18 disposals, 1.9 goals & 3.4 tackles is a pretty solid season

Definitely didn't do himself any favours with his own 4 game suspension

Another reason to post it was the mention of the minimum game requirement - not sure I remember that mentioned too often

He has done Richmond a big favour.

He is highly valuable to a club that wants to contend (most likely Freo).

To a club that is going through a full rebuild he is absolutely useless.

He is a luxury player, Not a grunt player.

With him formally requesting a trade Richmond can deal him with the support of their fans (“he gave us no choice”) and get some value for him.

Before the season has even finished? Wow!

Didn't even name his preferred destination. Just anywhere but Richmond :tearsofjoy:

Richmond superstar Shai Bolton has formally told the Tigers he wants to be traded, aware he will have to stay put if WA-based clubs cannot put up a vast trade bounty for his services.
Bolton might be playing his last AFL game for Richmond this weekend against Gold Coast, with the Tigers reconsidering their hard-line position on the 25-year-old.

When his name was floated as a trade possibility mid-year Bolton was still happy to stay, having made the call only 18 months before to play out his career in Richmond.

But with a second baby on the way later this year. Bolton and his partner are increasingly aware of the challenges of remaining away from family who find it difficult to get to Melbourne to support them.

He has four more years on a deal of $1.1-$1.2 million, with Fremantle and West Coast keen but the Dockers a much more likely home given their trio of first-round picks.

Exactly the type of player you'd be prepared to lose at the start of a rebuild. Fremantle have a bunch of picks as well

It's actually not good news. Makes freo better now, and Richmond better later.

Not good news for us.

Good news for Richmond, decent news for Freo.

It will be interesting to see how much freo are prepared to pay. Is he a longmuir kind of player?

They are usually a defence-first team, game breakers like Bolton are so valuable to teams that structure themselves that way.

Just like throwing a bit of salt and butter into the mashed potatoes, Bolton will bring that team to life

We can only hope they pick badly, but unfortunately they probably get one good player from that.
Probably.. but still you look at it and the Saints could get compo inside those picks for Battle... and Ashcroft + Lombard should be bid inside those them.... so the picks end up being more like 11/12 or 12/13.

Still can miss on those picks and are giving up a very skilled player under contract who is only 25 I think.

Anyway If I'm the Tigers I'm demanding those first 2 selections Freo hold.

Bolton is a great fit for Freo.

The WA teams always complain about WA players not going back to WA. Must be about 10 players this year that have considered / wanted to go back to WA. Someone like Baker will probably end up having to stay at Richmond because a better player in Bolton wants to go back now. Interesting timing on the English re-sign as well for example.

Christian Petracca fronts teammates as Demons hold players-only meeting

Christian Petracca fronted a players-only meeting at the Melbourne Football Club on Monday to discuss with his teammates his frustrations with the direction of the Demons and how it spilled into the public domain.

The 28-year-old has been the subject of reports he would leave the club – to which he is contracted until the end of 2029 – if he had the opportunity as he was disgruntled.

The club conceded in an email to members last week there were frustrations throughout the playing group after missing finals, and said a review was underway to examine avenues to improve its football program.
However, the Demons categorically stated last week that Petracca would not be traded and nor would four-time best and fairest winner Clayton Oliver, who had a below-par season in 2024 after an interrupted pre-season when his health and wellbeing was prioritised.

Melbourne skipper Max Gawn foreshadowed on Triple M on Monday morning there would be discussions between the players and Petracca over the next fortnight before they go on leave. A source familiar with the situation, who requested anonymity to speak freely, confirmed a players’ meeting occurred on Monday.

Another source, also requesting anonymity to speak freely, said there was no way a Petracca trade would occur.

Some teammates were initially frustrated at Petracca’s absence from the club as he recuperated on the Sunshine Coast, but Gawn said on Monday the group was aware of the reasons behind his time away from the club. The captain said he was comfortable with the reasons Petracca was granted leave.

“I’m happy he went away. Any player that is struggling mentally with anything that’s going on – [it] doesn’t have to be in the ICU (intensive care unit) like ‘Trac’ [was] – it can be just a rolled ankle; anyone that’s struggling [we’re] more than happy to grant leave on that. So that’ll all play out. There’ll be conversations that we’ll have over the next two weeks,” Gawn said.

The star midfielder, who won the Norm Smith Medal in 2021 – the same season he signed a seven-year extension with the club – has not addressed the reports publicly, having only returned to train with the club last week after a short break in Queensland to recuperate mentally and physically from the season-ending injury he suffered on the King’s Birthday public holiday.

Petracca has been open, however, about the effect of the incident that occurred when Collingwood skipper Darcy Moore cannoned into him in a marking contest.

He required emergency surgery after suffering a lacerated spleen, a punctured lung and broken ribs. He initially tried to keep playing before being subbed off at half-time.

Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin said last week the mid-season incident had shaken Petracca.

“Christian’s had an incredibly traumatic experience, and we don’t need to underestimate it,” Goodwin said.
“He had to go away from the game and get happy and healthy again.
“I’m sure he’s got some wonderful ideas about how we can get better, and we’ll lean into those suggestions.”
The Demons bounced back after a tumultuous week to be the first team this season to beat the Gold Coast in Carrara, thrashing the home team by 54 points, even without Oliver or Petracca.

Melbourne were contacted for comment.
