Darling is 28 now .. wow it's gone quick
Went to primary school and most of high school (before his indiscretions) with darling. I remember sitting on the hill watching him dob 50 meter drop punts when he was 13. He was always going to play for west coast and it makes me feel flipping old that it’s coming to an end.

On the brander debate: how long did it take Kennedy/darling to become the greatest of all time? Give the kid a chance ffs
Darling was pretty good straight away, strange comparison.

The worry isn’t Brander’s talent, it’s his heart and his lack of opportunities to actually play his preferred position. He’s been handled horrendously.

Jack kicked two goals in his first game and has been a consistent performer since day one.

Sucks for all fringe players with no second tier competitions this year to help them develop.

The season been a right cluster fu(k for player development.

Any idea whats going to happen next year regarding players in the seconds.

We fought so hard to establish the BEagles, will be a shame to revert back to having our players scattered across WAFL clubs or even worse, lack of development by continuing with scrimmages.

Nisbett has more or less said there will be no Beagles.

It's 800K just for the license, that 800K would go in the soft cap.

He also said that the club had no intentions of having an AFL reserves team if that was the way the AFL went.

Dare I say we will see our players back to playing in teams across the WAFL.

We really should push for this fee to fall outside the soft cap.

We need to flex some muscle.

Victorian clubs pay license fees as well to play in the VFL.

The problem is the ridiculously high price for WC in the WAFL.

Given that West Coast are the WAFC's main money maker, you would think that they would want a strong West Coast AFL club and find a way to reduce the cost of West Coast playing in the WAFL, but apparently not.

The other option is just to cop the luxury tax.

It is called a soft cap for a reason.

We should cop the luxury tax IMO. I understand the WAFC get a fixed percentage of our profit not revenue so it will bite them in the arse too.

Hurn to step back, perhaps retire, JK in the same boat- employ him as a forward coach that can step in with injury. Jetta probably gone, Shuey to rotate between mid and half forward if his hammies hold up. More Williams, we need to groom a Nauitanui replacement for 2-3 years time and Oscar permanent CHF will allow that. Next year will be a changing of the guard which will either see us middle or could provide a rejuvenating spark. We've got the seeds there to replace the big guns. Will we go for a tilt with the old firm and risk not developing enough? I hope we see a bit of an on field shift to youth, and last night was great experience for those young guys and emerging leaders like duggo, Ryan and co.

Issue with that is I think it is a tough sell asking coaches and footy dept staff to take significant pay cuts and then fork out extra tax to AFL for going over the cap to keep the WAFL team.

The biggest concerns are the mids we lack explosiveness and pace and the other is small forwards
Petch, Rioli, Cameron are supposed to be the the next gen small forward/mids.Coupled with ainsworth, foley, XON and venables who were all meant to be prolific ball-winning midfielders. For whatever reason none of them have come to fruition.

The 5 year forward line is Darling, OA, Ryan, Rioli (?), Williams, Waterman which is still leaps and bounds ahead of anyone else.

5 year midfield is Gaff, Kelly, Sheed, Yeo, Williams. Which I’d back-in to beat anyone.

I don’t think it’s panic stations, but we essentially have 5 years to get replacements for Darling, Gaff, Yeo.

If we were a struggling bottom 8 club then the answers are you probably start to build with your youth.
But we are a top 8 club and most would agree we have a list that can contend and that will still apply in 2021.
No sane coaching group is going to replace JK with Brander, Brander needs to get his spot by completely dominating in the WAFL at FF. How many years Brander plays as a backup is completely up to his own performances.
We need a small forward, we are well placed with JK and JD as our focal points.
Our midfield is our issue and it needs fixing, I don’t think the club has the balls to fix it and they will back what they have in and we will contNiue to get similar results.

What balls do the club need to fix it?

Get super aggressive and trade Sheed and others out? What?

Duggan has shown some very good signs on the ball, he should stay in there in 2021.

Yes and Yes, do what is required to fix a plodding midfield. Existing players are all we have to deal with so see what is out there.
Its hard to knock the club as we contend a lot but we have rarely traded out to improve, we love just sticking by our guys. It’s nice to do that but I am sick of us being the nice club.

I was actually thinking about this. How we don't trade players out and replace them with players traded in.

Is this actually a good way to build a list with players building stronger bonds etc? Is it part of our list plan?

Remember we are way out West and a large proportion of players looking to move don't want the WA travel factor, so opportunity to trade in is not like a club over East.

You suggest trading players out with currency who don't quite fit perfectly our needs. Sheed is the obvious example. Except we traded out of the top 10 to get two picks, with pick 11 the one we used on Sheed. Sheed and Redden shouldn't play in the same side? Well Redden isn't getting any younger, does Adelaide need a bigger body and experience to help rebuild? I see us moving Redden on before Sheed. But we need midfield depth so that doesn't help does it.

What about a Barrass trade? He would hold good currency and he and Gov are very similar in being intercepting KP defenders. Dogs are looking far and wide for a KP intercept defender. Not sure if Barrass likes the idea of being moved on.

Replace Barrass with either Brander or Edwards as the lock down tall defender. Edwards takes the Mason Cox monsters and Brander takes the lighter, quicker leading forwards.

So no, pushing decent players out the door to land quality players we need just isn't the Eagles style.

Being successful doesn't help the trade out argument. If we weren't as successful maybe we would be more ruthless!

We need to ram home how important it is for us to finish top 2.

We can't have lapses like we did in our first hub stay.

So out with the slight mental softness, in with ruthlessness.

Additionally I love Shuey as a player but there seems to be a little be of whinge that has crept into the group (mainly he and Gov). From memory that didn't happen under Hurn. So fixing up that part of the team would benefit as well.

I think our team is right there (obviously). No major personal changes needed.

The fact that we are right there makes the 1st round exit hard to take. Really stresses the importance of the games we let slip during the regular season that cost us that top 2 or 4.
