Should trade Brander to Geelong for WC first rd pick this year

If Brander was worth a first round pick in the forth coming draft we would not be trading him.

Brander has negligible trade value.

That's horrible recruiting then. Surely there's better players in wafl in their positions?

Pretty harsh to judge a guy like Petch who's been injured all year and no proper reserves matches to play to get back into form.

If he was spudding it up in the WAFL then the criticism would be fully warranted but I think it's a bit harsh to judge players coming in off long layoffs in this season.

Should trade Brander to Geelong for WC first rd pick this year

Geelong are going after players like Jeremy Cameron and Joe Daniher, not Jarrod Brander.

They enquired about him during the TK trade wars of 2018/19 and we feigned shock and horror that they would even ask.

This is the same conundrum we have had for over 12 months.

How do we fit everyone in a forward line while JK is still playing.

JK is keeping Brander out of the team in his spot, and JK is playing well enough to warrant a contract to play next year.

But then what do we do with Brander?

And if we trade Brander, what do we do after next year when JK doesn't play?

I was on the JK retire band wagon pretty hard at the beginning of the season resumption, but did get shown up for it by JK after he hit his straps, but the reality is there is a dilemma here.

We may very well be a less formidable team if Kennedy doesn't play next year, but if Brander isn't part of our forward line we will be a far worse team once JK retires.

It's awkward and there is no easy solution.

Embarrassing because we had almost a full strength side available on our home deck and lost to the 8th placed side that we thumped by 10 goals earlier in the year, not to mention how we let Mason ******* Cox kick 3 goals in a few minutes. Gut wrenching because it went down to the final minute and we lost by a point.

It is fair to say 2020 was a write off period. Worst year by for for all involved.

JK should retire.

Allen is ready to play 2nd fiddle to Darling and it’ll actually enable Brander and Williams to become relevant team members and develop. I don’t think another season of those two stagnating is best for the next decade of the club.

Do you really think Allen and Brander would offer more than Josh? It would be a net negative to the team if JK were to retire.

There is also a secondary question to this and that is, if Josh Kennedy retires at the end of 2021 where does that leave us if Brander spends another year in the wilderness, or leaves for more opportunity at another club at the end of this year?

The medium term future of the forward line is(or should be) Oscar and brander.

Kennedy has put together a pretty good season all considered. But let’s be clear, JK playing on is keeping us from
Playing Brander in the role that we drafted him for. We shouldn’t pretend that trade off doesn’t exist because it does.

The solution to that would be tom play JK on reduced minutes and/or only play home games. Would be good for his body, progress Brander and help the team adjust to new structures. As has been pointed out, we are far too JK conscious when going inside 50.

Guess it depends on if we believe a flag in 2021 is dependent on JK playing. Brander is a complete unknown at FF at AFL level. I remembered his accuracy wasn't great in 2018 in the WAFL. The only one that can replace him in the immediate in that role is Allen. Brander would need some development in the WAFL (if the situation allows us to have a proper home & away season) to see if he can play that role in the AFL. Can't just stick him in there and hope for the best when he hasn't played there for 2 years. Whether or not we move him forward is not entirely dependent on JK retiring, but it would with Allen's development as a genuine key forward.

Brander should be developed as third tall back or forward. Probably back which is where we have more need.
Waterman is a much more promising wing prospect. Seems to read the game better. Waterman would be good as a forward too but there is more of a log jam for positions there.

I like the idea of Waterman in the defensive wing role.

That allows him to push back when required as well and support defense. He has a very good tank, is a good mark and can kick a goal. Extremely underrated.

Brander is a forward and perhaps Waterman/Brander should switch roles.

Forward is harder to play than back. Often when a player is having trouble finding their feet they are played back to begin with.
Even the maligned Petrucelle might establish hinmself as a hbf. Duggan, Cole and Nelson could all move to the midfield.

And we’re talking about a year at most, maybe two, of JK still playing. It’s not like Jarrod Brander is never going to become a player if he doesn’t play in his preferred position for one more year. We’re in a premiership window, and JK offers far more than Brander could at the current time.

McGovern didn’t start properly playing until he was 22. Sometimes these things happen when the club you’re at is in a period of sustained success. IMO it’s just not as severe as some are making it out to be.

Do we think losing Brander if JK plays on would be a negative?

Brander is contracted though.

But why would Brander leave if he’ll be taking the FF spot permanently in a year, maybe two? It’s not like he has to wait five years, or something absurd like that.

If the whispers aren’t just bullshit and Cripps is considering a move home we should be asking Gaff where his heads at.

I have had the pleasure of seeing gaff absolutely destroy the crows here in Adelaide on multiple occasions, he’s a great player but You’ve got to give something to get something and he does have clauses in his contract. I think Carlton would prefer this as they would want something more than just draft picks back.

Cripps, Yeo, shuey in the guts shift kelly to a wing allowing him to play a similar role he did at Geelong. all this is assuming Cripps/gaff salary is on par.

in the off season take waterman and Nelson aside and tell them no Bali this year. Develop your tanks so you can become unstoppable AFL players. Waterman could be a weapon on the wing if he could run all day and Nelson has the bit of campaigner the team is missing, just looks gassed all game.

Sheed to spend the off season with Yeo working on tackling.

Bali is an option with covid???

Gaff was literally our best mid in the final and just committed to honouring the final 4 years of his contract and you want to trade him

Cool

Brander is 22 in February and has played around 10-11 games, with very few in his preferred position. If JK does play on, that's another year for Brander not in the team.

JK has earnt a new contract if he chooses to continue and play next year.

I don't like the idea of JK only playing home games or something along those lines. I feel like if you want your connection forward of the ball you need some continuity.

I don't know what the answer is, but I think the current circumstance is far far from ideal.

Outside of that 5 game patch mid year where JK kicked 20 goals, he only went at about a goal a game. He has already declined and the question is has he got another pre season in him while turning 34 next year.

hadn’t seen he had just recommitted.

In an open market who do you think would command more value Cripps or Gaff
Cripps would but I feel that is mainly on reputation and a higher ceiling. Cripps best is better than Gaff by far, but Gaff plays at his best incredibly consistently.

I would rather have Gaff. I don't like one paced inside midfielders and I suspect the only way Carlton lets Cripps walk is if his body is cooked.

Line breaking speed in the midfield. Whether it comes from internal development or from outside, Collingwood exposed our lack of midfield foot speed (I'm looking at you Gaff).

But Gaff isn’t really the problem. He has exceptional attributes. The issue is he’s in a midfield with Sheed & Redden & even Kelly - those 4 are all slow to moderate and you can’t have that many who are slow - I thought we learned this in the Priddis era 🤷🏻‍♂️

If Sheed has currency - which I think he might - I’d consider moving him on TBH.

Redden is 30 in a couple of months. Shuey 32.

The midfield in general needs some work given the lack of obvious kids coming through. And Anus certainly doesn’t solve the problem you’ve identified
