Review Rd 17 - Dees v Poort West Horsham: the Good, Bad and Fugly

Ffs, let’s at least save the arguing for games we lose you dickheads.

Petty, Trac, Tmac, and Kozzie were all massive. Thought Brown was okay, but jeez he got pushed out of a lot of one on one marking contests- needs to drop that anchor.
You missed one bloke. Oliver was huge. Especially in the first half.

For some reason, you can pretty much tell whether you are going to have a rough night watching the Dees within about 5 minutes. Even though the lead rotated in the first quarter I was actually strangely relaxed. Max always looks to tap to Oliver as his first option. If Oliver is up and about and winning contests in the square then Melbourne is already ahead in terms of likelihood to win overall. And right from the first Max looked more dynamic with his ruck work and Oliver was reading it 100 percent.

I wouldn’t mind somehow getting a match against Port in the finals.

The data I’m looking at wouldn’t support the idea that we’re a young side.
Also, for the record, the average age of the side in our three losses has been 24 years, 9 months (GWS), 24 years, 7 months (Collingwood) and 25 years, 2 months (Adelaide). We were the younger side by more than a year against both GWS and Collingwood, and older by 4 months against Adelaide.

I don't know what our median age has been but only three sides since 1997 and seven sides since 1987 have won the flag with an median age of less than 25 and only one side has averaged fewer than 101 games. In those losses we averaged between 85 and 92 games. For a side doing this well in the premiership race we are definitely still young.

But then again all I do is make excuses for the club, so what do I know :)

We’re really a strange team. To be 5-0 against the other clubs in the top 6, yet still have the losses against bad teams…. I really don’t know what to make of it.

Though this I feel very different about this Melbourne side and history means nothing. In the past losing to shit teams when we are 'good' is very Melbourne. Just look at seasons from 2000 to 2006.

2018 was the opposite really, we were spanking the lesser sides, and just couldn't get over the line against the best. This season we've shown we have a level that can actually beat any current side and potentially win flag, could never have said about our 2018 side.

Having said that, botching games against crap teams is classic dees, you gotta get used to it.

You put forward a very nuanced argument.

But, if Weid is a dud, then Brown is a dud too... assuming that Brown's abilities are limited to what he showed last night.

I'm not knocking how Brown performed his role, but it seems that you are holding Weid to a different set of expectations. There's nothing that Brown did last night that Weid couldn't have done in the same role.
Mate he's finished, cooked..

Never have I seen a more mentally fragile then Weideman. The guy drops his head the moment he drops a mark and almost looks like he's about to get emotionally overwhelmed.

Hasn't got the ticker.

Not many decent ones that we could get. Probably better going the draft. KPFs on the market will either have injury/form issues (like BBB last year), or cost a fortune in picks/$ that we don't have.

Two glorious words "Premiership window" ...options we never thought existed now suddenly will. I wouldn't worry about the free agent pool. There is always one who wants to break a contract at their current club who is sick of the bullshit.

I really like Weid and wanted him to make it, got all the tools , but the evidence against him has got to the point now where it can't be ignored.

Cash out now while he still has trade value for a proven KPF at AFL level.

No idea why Champion Data don't list Joe Goose on the stat sheets.

Probably coz it's hard to work out who to give 100 ranking points to...the receiver and bloke who kicks the goal or the bloke who handballs it over the top. Trying to establish who deserves what on such a complex play I imagine is similar to splitting an atom.

Agree and I’m a huge supporter of the Weid.

Yeah we have given Weid multiple chances and still hasn't cemented his spot, ideally we'd have an A grade KPF but for now I think Brown is the go.

I should have noticed the sign that we were on within the first second of last night's game when Max decided to try and spike the ball forward instead of doing his fancy behind the back shit.

This is the ultimate read on the MFC, I'll be looking for this closely moving forward.

Damn, I never thought about it like that 😟. I was looking at it quite literally.

C. Petracca: 35 disposals, some clearances, 1 goal, one behind, other stats.
J. Goose: 2 disposals, 2 goals.

3 votes C. Petracca
2 votes M. Gawn
1 vote J. Goose.

etc.
I don’t know shit about anything though 😇

On fox max said he literally was sick of our slow starts and wanted to start off well so decided to get momentum going

You're far more knowledgeable than you believe you are Mr. Ass

It'll be interesting to see if we drop numbers begins the ball this week or keep attacking from the first bounce. We are good enough to kill the game in the first quarter if we set up like we did against Port.

Agree totally!

He just punched the first ball forward and I felt better instantly. The week before nothing worked in the midfield. As soon as Max spiked it 5 seconds into the game I knew we were at least trying to address a problem and that made me feel good. The fact that ultimately it all worked and we won was okay too

Also still not gonna concede about my point that the teams intent and set up was far more important than the players in it

But
More than happy to eat humble pie on saying Brown couldn't play up field. Had no idea he was such a good field kick. I'm excited to see him kick the ball inside 50 more often, the direction he kicks them are beautiful. Forwards advantage
