That said, why does he need to be in the 1s to add the necessary strings to his bow? I genuinely don’t have an answer to that, aside from maybe the simple answer “he’s in until Marchbank and Williamson return at which point he’ll head back to 2s for further development”

Alternatively the coaching team feel he’s ready and just needs exposure to AFL and the tempo for it all to click. Stats suggest this might be the case as he’s clearly building into it:

Round 1= 9 disposals @ 44% efficiency, 3 rebound 50s, 2 score involvements.

Round 2 = 13 disposals @ 61% efficiency, 3 rebound 50s, 4 score involvements.

Also not sure if it’s been mentioned, but we ran a combined 301km this week, 3rd to Melbourne who ran 304... but ours was in wet conditions to cap it off.

That puts us top of the team km covered over the first 2 rounds @600 total. Fantastic effort from the lads.

Hazard a guess that Port won’t be able to back up this week quite as well as they did last, like Richmond this week after we ran them ragged in Rd 1. Not a punter but if I was...

The backline I assume would look something like;
Thomas, Jones, Plowman
Simpson, Weitering Marchbank

The mid's would be
Walsh, Cripps, Murphy,
Dow, SPS Phillips

Up forward
Fisher, McGovern, Setterfield
Gibbons, McKay, Kennedy

With the bench being

I would say if the goal is to get him to choose better options, execute better and show more composure WHILE UNDER PRESSURE there is very little point in playing him in the VFL environment. The step up in pressure from AFL to VFL is too big.

That's one possibility. I'd have Polson starting in FP before Gibbons.

I'd also start Walsh on the bench and have Daisy starting on the wing.

Take your choice of Garlett or Newman for BP.

Line ups are pretty fluid now days, so I'm sure they're all going to change throughout the game anyway.

Fasolo plays as if he's a tall, so he's constantly trying to mark the ball on the lead. Unfortunately for him, Carlton already have enough marking players and what they really need are more high pressure, crumbing forwards that work hard to position themselves front and centre.

I'm not sure you can teach that old dog new tricks. I've already said bring Kennedy in for Fasolo, so Cripps can play more time forward. The other one I'd play more minutes forward is Fisher.

I would not mind Murphy playing that Boak role in the forward line. Fisher is certainly another player that could provide defensive pressure in the forward half.

And this is what I mean by dealing with the errors. They are a learning experience every time. The more opportunity he gets to adjust to the pace of the game and what is expected of him the better he will be and increasingly more consistent. He's got the potential to be a very good footballer in a role that we've been crying out for years. I can envision him becoming the running half back that we hoped Chris Yarran would become way back when. It's been a huge deficiency in our gameplan since his wellness left him. Has shown signs that he has a bit of mongrel in him too which is nice.
