:thumbsu:Spot on. I have been wanting all season in having Jarred Moore playing in the firsts. Maybe after the way the season panned out, Roosy will pick more of the younger players for the seniors. Look at the results the Magpies achieved this year. We can only hope.:)

Sydney Morning Herald Friday the 21st September

Sydney Swans player Jarred Moore was named the winner of the AFL Canberra 1st Division best and fairest award, the Mulrooney Medal, at a ceremony last Monday night.

Over the course of the 2007 season, during which he played 16 games for the reserves side, Moore collected 23 votes to win the award. Teammate Ryan Brabazon came second, with 18 votes.

Swans Reserves players featured heavily in voting, with four of the top five places filled by Swans players.

The final tally was Moore (23), Brabazon (18), Mitch Daniher of the Queanbeyan tigers on 15, then Simon Philips and Kristin Thornton in equal fourth place, each with 13 votes. Over the course of the 2007 season, eighteen individual Swans reserves players received votes.

The Swans Reserves will seek their third consecutive AFL Canberra 1st Division title on Sunday afternoon, when they face Queanbeyan at Manuka Oval, Canberra. everyone try to get down there and see the next generation of AFL footballers.

Well done Jarred Moore! From memory, he only played a handful of 2007 senior games. Tough luck... but congratz to him. Hopefully him and the others who made it in the top 5 play a few more than a handful of games in the senior side next year. They thoroughly deserve it.

There are players being rested from todays GF to get themselves right for next year. (A big preseason)
So I guess thats means who ever isnt there 2day (given a couple of players long term injurys ) will most likely will be there in 08

Players eligible to play who didn't include Doyle, DOK (both LTIL), Brennan, Laidlaw, Jack, Phillips, Moore (first two definitely injured, other three reported to be too), Schmidt, LRT and maybe Dempster (not sure if he played enough games to qualify but certainly didn't play today).

Great game by the way.

This is well a guide to next year I think. Some players that aren't there, and are injured may already have been told they will be traded or cut. Others are considered senior and have decided they are already accepted as the future.
Everyone else is playing for their spots. Now if for most part you remove the players drafted last season, it would seem it is these guys who the delistings will come from.

Lets analyse. Players in bold under question..

Eligible Players - did not play
Doyle - LTIL - Gone
DOK - LTIL - New draftee, not in doubt.
Brennan - Injured, likely senior form decided his fate. I dare say that fate is to stay on the list. - Stay
Laidlaw - Injured. Would have seen in Geelong game that he is a likely player. Also he turned up at reserves finals to watch the game. Likely not in doubt. Stay
Jack - Injured. Depends whether Roos saw enough at senior level to keep him. With Crouch on the way out, likely replacement. Stay.
Phillips - Injured, but rumours of problems within the club. That and his lack of size may determine his future. Unlikely
Moore - Pretty sure is on contract, but can't be certain. Just won B&F for the reserves. Likely stay..
Schmidt - No chance. stay
LRT - No Chance. stay
Dempster - A favourite of Roos. Seen as a senior player when fit. Stay.

Did not play:
D.Currie - New draftee, spent most of year doing HSC. Stay

Players that are left from younger guys:
Brabazon - Safe
Barlow - Safe
Brennan - Safe
M Davis (rookie)- Gone
Faulks - New draftee, but problems in club apparently?
Grundy - Safe
Jack - Safe
Moore - Safe
O'Dwyer (rookie)- Gone
Rowe (rookie) - Unsure
Simpkin - Gone
Smith (rookie)- Gone
Thornton - Safe
Vogels - Gone
White - New Draftee, safe.

My best guesses?
GONE(Senior List): Doyle, Vogels, Simpkin, Phillips.
GONE(rookie list): O'Dwyer, Shaw, Smith, (Rowe, may be okay.)
Elevated: Brennan, Barlow, Jack.
VETS: Magic, L Barry.

That will give us 3 in the national draft, not withstanding some players being traded outside of these, or if players ask to leave.

It has been suggested elsewhere that 8 spots are to be cleared from the list. It wasn't clear if this was just the senior list or includes rookies too. If it is all lists, it sounds a little conservative. If it is just the senior list, I suspect a couple of players are going to be very disappointed.

From your summary list above, add Davis to the almost certain rookie chops. Not sure about Rowe. Would like to see him stay but have a feeling he won't. Earlier this year I was hopeful about O'Dwyer but he probably hasn't shown enough improvement this year to get another year. He has plenty of dash and can do the eye catching stuff at times but too many of his disposals are rushed and shoddy.

Smith is another matter. Didn't see much to get enthusiastic about early but he's definitely come on over the season. He's a bit on the vanilla side and is still very skinny but he's pretty courageous and has better than average skills (compared to his reserves team mates). I wouldn't be surprised if he got another year, depending on how they assess the rest. And by the way he was terrific this afternoon - probably in my top half dozen.

If the reported 8-to-go are just from the senior list, I suspect that Faulks may get shown the door early if there is any truth in the suggestions he doesn't "get" the dedication level required. And I also think that a couple of Brabazon (notwithstanding today's great performance), Thornton, Phillips and Simpkin will be in the firing line, all for different reasons. I think they all have something left to give and plenty of scope for improvement but without losing a couple, the numbers don't add up.

I wonder whether Roos and his team will be brave enough to forceably persuade either Crouch or Mathews that their best is behind them?

And I wouldn't be surprised to see a couple of the more marketable kiddies shopped around, to give them more opportunities if nothing else - the likes of Moore, Grundy, maybe even Schmidt?

I went to the game yesterday and if i can say so Nick Smith was probably BOG. Not sure why you would delist him.

Agree with you that he had a very good game yesterday (see my comments above). I reckon he may well survive the cut though his skinny build may be a concern.

I reckon they knew last year that James Wall could definitely play (and Ross Lyon was happy to take him down at the Saints). But he was so stick like - and didn't look like growing into his body for a number of years - that he was probably deemed the most expendable.

Saints fans reckon he's been playing very very well in the VFL this year - but still comment on his stick like build.

The main draft only really gives you a likely success with the first two picks (2 total vacancies); after that it is good judgement and/or good luck. With Craig Bird to be taken as a no cost ‘inside’ midfielder with our last round pick (3 total vacancies), I think we will look at a quick midfielder and a KPP. These newbies won’t fix our needs for a quick midfielder and KPP (as stated by Allison I think) for next year; so we are likely looking at the same in mature bodies through trading etc (5 total vacancies). Promoted from the Rookie List is probably going to be Barlow, Brennan and possibly Jack (can he be left on the Rookie List for another year?). Jack is the last one because we do have similar players in front of him, I am thinking of Schmidt and Moore of the youngsters. Therefore we need about 7 – 8 total vacancies off the senior list.

Where do we find these roughly 7 – 8 spots? Barry and MOL give us two if they are both eligible for the veteran’s list. If the usual suspects of the older ‘inside’ midfielders do ‘retire’ that maybe about an extra two. Therefore we have 2-4 spots. Of our KPP’s; if the rumours of Faulks’ problems are true then we have 3 – 5 and if Vogels is moved on then 4 – 6 (I personally think this was a missed opportunity for he never seemed to get an extended chance, especially after Round 1 this year). Of our midfielders Simpkins (more of an ‘inside’ type) appears to have been overtaken by the previously mentioned Schmidt, Moore and Jack (if possible I would put him back on the Rookie List ‘a la Monty’ some years ago, Simpkin does show something). Now we have 5 – 7 spots. Of our ‘outside’ midfielders (old and young), I think all have shown enough to stay on. Phillips is being mentioned in despatches but he is unique on our list as a possible specialist ‘small’ forward. If we are not to play him as such then I suspect we have 6 – 8 spots. Similarly Doyle is also often mentioned. I think he will stay regardless of Jolly’s future; as Doyle is contracted for another year, is tall and actually young for a ruckman. If he moves then we have 7 – 9 spots available.

Of the Rookies; astute Judges on this board think Rowe, Smith should stay. Add Simpkin if possible and some of the good NSW ‘top ups’ we have found. I would also think it worth a punt on at least one former top draft pick from another club who has been cast adrift (as we did with Luke Brennan type). We do have a good medical team and club culture.

The problem with putting both Leo and Magic on the VL means you get two fewer spots for rookies. Maybe that is less of an issue for the Swans given they have an additional three spots for local boys.

Agree that Simpkin might get squeezed out, but also agree he's worth retaining as a rookie if he wants to (not quite 'ala Monty' since he was never on the rookie list, just delisted and redrafted onto the main list).

One spot on the rookie list is already taken by Murphy. Keeping Jack (who I think will get promoted), Rowe and Smith leaves not a lot of room for fresh faces.

As for the local boys, there look like there might be a couple of decent options who played in the U18 championships (aside from Bird). You'd expect Taylor Walker to get taken by the Crows but there are a couple of others eligible this year who showed a bit - the team did go through the championships undefeated, after all. Either Wilsen or Wilson is a decent looking ruckman (one is apprenticed to the Roos and other to Freo I believe but don't know which is which). If their sponsoring clubs don't take up the option, I'd expect the Swans to look at the ruck amongst these two.

Then there's the tiny bloke from Broken Hill who was a clearance machine (behind Bird) and has a pretty good leap to him. Would be worth drafting him just to watch him and Flipper buzz around together in the ACTAFL next year.

Sadly I don't think any of the tired older players will be chopped - which makes me think that none of Moore, Phillips, Grundy, Thornton or Brabazon is completely safe (though Moore, at least, is contracted).

And of course the club could yet spring a surprise by promoting Matty Davis back to the senior list...
