Lel Kreuzer played like arse before he got injured. Just coz he got first touch on the odd occasion doesn't mean he did anything good with it. We were raping them while that unfit spud was on the ground. He just helped us plus the umps let the shithouse centre bounces go when they bounced the spooners way

Our contested work was shite because we were playing the 2020 wooden spooners in a joke match in a joke season. Why would we even bother trying
Couldn't have said it any better myself.

We were smashing them until Kruse got injured.

*WTF is it with that bloke - every year's the same script!?

It is what it is. Don't know what people are expecting round 1. Our best was breathtaking. Second half ordinary As a spectacle I forgot there was no crowd when blues got close. Last years round 1 game was worse. I feel like we played the Pies. Moral victors and injuries to blues influenced the result.Rubbish. Just wait till next week they will blame injuries and Pendles Cv-19 test.

Houli wont be back within a week with a calf strain , Stacky was ok , no more or less , 15 games into his career , we should persist . I really want to see Rossy back into the side as I reckon we lacked some grunt not that the stats said so, we were 3 clearances less than the blues . CCJ just has to come in as nank really floundered , didn’t look like taking a mark and was clumsy with the ball in hand
I thought Stack did some good things in the last quarter, team stuff.
He will get better for the run.

Everything last night was pretty much 'meh' round 1 footy. But there was one play that stood out to me. Marlion Pickett's kick inside 50 to Bolton in the last quarter. It was unbelievable. Watch how long he holds onto the ball before releasing the kick, just waiting for space to free up for a target. Then he kicks it to one of our smallest players who was surrounded by Blues. It caught me eye and I cant wait to see more of it. Our forward half on paper is elite but we sometimes fail to capitalize on our inside 50s. Pickett will help fix this. I'm going to love watching him play this year. Bring on the Pies

Our centre clearances were absolutely horrible last night.
23 tackles all up for Carlton. I know the game was shortened, but wow.

Eh its round 1 im happy to always take the 4 points regardless of how sh1tful we look.

Especially this year, if we truly get through the season (which i doubt) seeing as you only play each team once, wins are the only metric that truly matters. %is very unlikely to come into it as you dont have teams beating up the cellar dwellers twice a season to pump up their %

we beat the teams who will finish 5th and below and go even with the top 4 and well be up there for the flag. drop 1-2 games against the teams fighting to slip into the top 8 and you can see yourself missing the finals.

but really i still think they whole thing will be sh1t canned in a month the second someone tests positive, so enjoy the footy while its on.

Not sure if it was mentioned but the shorter qtrs do not benefit us at all. Dimma mentioned in his presser that our KPIs spike at the back end of qtrs. The shorter qtrs kept Carlton in the contest longer.

Gil just said if a player tests positive (which will happen sooner or later, probably sooner) the comp will be shut down for a minimum of 30 days.

then why if qtrs stopped at 16 mins last season would we have finished equal 1st?

I was talking specifically last night and referencing the coach

but you said "do not benefit us at all" as in it will cost us through-out the season

weird that dimma would say that when it actually wouldnt have cost us last season

Our success is based on players with roles within the team to compliment the likes of Dusty etc.Broad isn't A grade material but i think you expect our players to be so.Never going to happen.
Balta atm hasn't got the capacity to even play a role like Broads.
Broad was way up in the running stats. I'll have to re-watch the game. I thought he rebounded OK

Dimma implicitly shat on the umps in his presser for not giving Tom and Jack any frees for all the blocking yet we gave away 8 free kick goals. Good on ya Dimma

Yep, needed to be said.

LOL yeah, the first two centre bounces would have gone down Kreuzer's throat if he'd opened his mouth and I thought to myself 'here we go, there will be a flock of pelicans who take a whole 5 minutes of a game to confirm their biases ranting about Kreuzer *smashing* Soldo in the ruck.'

Sure as the sun coming up, that's what happened. ;)

Out: Broad, Soldo, Nankervis, Graham, Stack

If we carry these strugglers in next week we’ll get a major hiding.

In: Garthwaite, CCJ, Chol, Ross, Houli

Hardwick said we played two genuine rucks because we believe we have three talented rucks.

CCJ is the 3rd 'talented' ruck and may well come in for Nank (who looked way short of full fitness and even further short of having his touch back), Chol isn't even a blip on the radar. Clearly Hardwick either doesn't rate him as talented or doesn't think he's a ruckman. Ditto Balta. Coaching staff would have been happy with Soldo's overall game and barring injury, he'll be our first ruck for the entire season. As I predicted pre-season, his numbers this year will see him firmly rated with the top 2nd tier rucks in the league. That's great from him for now.

There isn't a side in the league who wouldn't fall over themselves to list a genuine giant who can crack a three-figure CD match rating from just 58% game time in his 23rd game.

They were shizen and we arre lucky we didnt play a team who can actually use the ball well and have a fwd line.

Same players shown up same problems shown up.

Soldo and Nankervis was pathetic and there is no way we can keep on playing both of them. They got smashed by Kruezer early and thank got he got injured early. With him off the ground between the two of them they should have totally dominated the game and didnt.

We should have dominated in the air down back when Casboult their only genuine key fwd had to play ruck but struggled. We were smashed in clearances and our contested ball work was horrid if they had just a bit of midfield depth we were in trouble and even then like i said if they could use the ball better they would have won and if they had just one dominant tall fwd who could give a good contest every time they would have won. No one can tell me if Kruezer had stayed fit and Curnow, Betts and McKay were fit we would have lost this game.
We lost in a whole pile of key areas against this mob i shudder to think what will happen against a good side.

Imo heads need to role there are players who took into this game what they always do and there was no sign of any sort of improvement in areas of weakness.
That was totally unacceptable even though we won and there is no excuse after finding a whole lot of depth last yr to not make changes and give em all a good wake up call.
Do you understand that we were best part of 8 goals up at half time and 50 points up halfway through the 3rd quarter and then put the cue in the rack?

You say we were smashed in clearances? We lost the overall clearance battle by 3, winning centre clearances by 1 & losing around the ground stoppages by 4.

Not sure you have noticed, but over the majority of the last 3 seasons and 1 game our game plan has relied upon the opposition being put under immense pressure around the contest, so that when they win possession they invariably hack it forward where our defensive set up allows us to win the turnover and then catch teams on the counter attack. On the other hand when we win possession around the contest we don't just hack it forward, our preferred option is to flip around quick handballs to get the ball into space where our support is and then cut through the oppositions zone with waves of runners coming from behind the contest to create the overlap and allowing us to handball it forward until we get into the right areas to then go long and direct into an open F50.

Finally Carlton got a number of goals from some of the softest free kicks including Astbury being pinged for holding when Silvagni tried to out body him but couldn't budge him. Edwards being pinged for a couple of fingers getting caught up in Casboults jumper as they fell to the ground. Newnes suckering Astbury into giving away a 50m penalty by grappling with him 25m off the play, then flopping when Astbury pushed him away. Baker being pinged for a block on Martin while holding his ground in a marking contest that involved 6 different players trying to get to a kick dropping short. Casboult flopping in the first quarter when outnumbered 3-1. Overall they kicked 8 goals from free kicks, whereas I think we only had the one where Dusty got awarded a free kick for being held in the second quarter.

We had 25 less disposals but were 12% more effective with our disposals running at 80% for the game and were 16% more efficient once inside 50. We also butchered a handful of chances late in the game that should have pushed the margin back out to near 7 goals, including Riewoldt kicking out on the full when trying to pass to Dusty, Lynch & Lambert leaving the ball for each other when Bolton passed I50 & Bolton missing an easy shot on the siren are 3 that spring to mind.

You still can’t discount the possibility that longer terms suit us. It is possible opponents didn’t run as hard earlier in quarters last year for fear of us running over them late. The 16 minute mark score in a 20 minute quarter could be very different from the 16 minute mark score in a 16 minute quarter.

Having said that it is an interesting stat, where did you get it from?

dissapointed we did not bury the scum. We relied on too few last night. Not many new things I would like to add but give graham another week, was one of our best before injured. Broad does some good things, but to me is a bit of a liability in the air. gets shouldered out too easily. Chol could take arsby place one day and if he continues to play like that he is done. Lynch had too many apples over summer.

Standard round one performance from us. Don't know about you guys but I felt it got a little out of control in the last, they got to within 3 goals twice. It has always annoyed me that we rarely put teams away but I'm used to it, it's what we do and has obviously worked well over the last few years.

Stack coming out of the back half/delivering the ball inside 50 looks so much better than he does playing ahead of the ball. He's too good a user not to have him playing in the middle/off half back.

Well said, RT.

If only he was 10% as generous and fair minded to his own supposed club as he is to Geelong. ;)
