I'm in the camp that think the season should be modified and played only when crowds can attend. With that in mind, I felt flat throughout the game, but it panned up exactly as it has over the last few years. It is basically JLT#3 for us, and we don't peak until after the mid season bye, so I'm just glad this game is done.

Roast

No crowd = no atmosphere
CH7 calling Betts while the game was live, replaying replays while the game is live..
Astbury and his undiscplinary acts
Two sets of umpiring rules for forwards (8 goals from frees ?)
Lynch well held - literally - see above
Loose checking on Martin - Poor defensive effort for his 4 goals
Long kicking out of defensive 50 to marking contests ?

Toast

Third practice game done with. Scums GF defeat again..
Small forwards ran amok - Bolton, Rioli and Castagna
Baker - Was impacting contest, second and third efforts. A small forward in the backline providing tackle pressure.
Lynch won't be quiet 2 weeks in a row...

When I woke up this morning, there was no buzz, no excitement that the season started. Hopefully, I will get used to it, but I think I've taken it for granted - we just attend nearly all games. Sitting at home watching an empty stadium.....

I don't get the heat on Broad. He was part of the 17 flag with Rance present. Part of the 19 flag without him. Our backline is a SYSTEM, and he plays his role WELL. Covers a HUGE amount of territory, and provides an option because he keeps moving in support. Same with Short.. Makes very good decisions and has a "Geoff Raines" like penetrating kick. Astbury was a liability, and it would have been ironic if Caddy walk across to him and reminded him of his brain fart (against Essendon)..Nank and Graham look unfit.

Umpiring in general play was ok. I had no issues with the decisions. The 50m To Edwards and Lambert were unnecessary. But I was furious with Lynch and Jack being continually blocked and held on to. Meanwhile, up to the 11th minute of the 3rd quarter, ALL the scums goals were from frees. The Silvagni frees were a joke and the Martin was incredibly bad. Going off these soft frees, we expect any players in packs will be awarded a free as long as it is in front of goal, and not a Richmond player....

Glad it is done to be honest. It is hard to measure if we have improved because we didn't get out of third gear, and we peak after the bye.

Out - Nankervis
In - CCJ

overlap and allowing us to handball it forward until we get into the right areas to then go long and direct into an open F50.

Finally Carlton got a number of goals from some of the softest free kicks including Astbury being pinged for holding when Silvagni tried to out body him but couldn't budge him. Edwards being pinged for a couple of fingers getting caught up in Casboults jumper as they fell to the ground. Newnes suckering Astbury into giving away a 50m penalty by grappling with him 25m off the play, then flopping when Astbury pushed him away. Baker being pinged for a block on Martin while holding his ground in a marking contest that involved 6 different players trying to get to a kick dropping short. Casboult flopping in the first quarter when outnumbered 3-1. Overall they kicked 8 goals from free kicks, whereas I think we only had the one where Dusty got awarded a free kick for being held in the second quarter.
Dave Asbury was pinged twice for being 2 times stronger than his weak and grappling opponents. Umps suckered into the sympathy card for individuals being weak and shit and going to ground like pissants.

That's what I found frustrating any one on one contests the Blues players would carry on, fling their arms out like they were being impeded, same as when they were getting tackled, falling to ground.

It was pathetic and if they keep that up as the season goes they will be lucky to win a match, unfortunately last night the umpires fell for it.

Still think we will need two rucks they will use cox as the 2nd ruck and we need someone who will be able to at least nullify him and Broad wouldn’t be able to

will need to either Back Nank in for one more week or bring CCJ in for him
We should have dominated last night once kruza went down.
Broad can run off the yank once the ball is in our hands.
Only caution I have is Broad isn't as smart as Grigga was.

Please help me understand how Broad contributed tonight.
He was miles off his man with the ball coming in numerous times and it cost us. Didn't intercept. Didn't rebound. Didn't provide a chop out.
The blokes a fan favourite, I get it, but the fact is he gets caught out all the time.
Not a fan favourite at all. But he done good, played strong last night.
