Second half we reverted to bombing it in though and they just intercepted and rebounded.

Which begs the question, why the change? Did we not handle the pressure? Was it a directive? It happens all too often. Happened against the Dogs where we went away from what was working to go long and lost. Same thing tonight

Seriously though, do we like a skills coach or something? A bit better in the first half, but our players consistently slip over, kick to someone’s feet, handball to someone under pressure, and miss set shots under 18 kids could kick. It’s just such simple stuff that makes games so frustrating because you play well, maybe even better than the opposition and lose purely because of inaccuracy and mistakes. At least for me personally, it’s * souls crushing watching us at the moment, absolutely shooting our selves in the foot

Still think that also falls on some of the forward group like Cotch and Cumbo
They could still fly for a few of those marks and bring the ball to ground like they did in the first half

Could make a pretty decent argument that we're missing Tarrant more than any other player on our list. Time and time again our backline is incapable of killing the footy, even when they get a fist on the ball its landing in a dangerous position for the opposition. We ultimately lost this particular game as Tyler Young wasn't strong enough to deal with a second year key forward, put Tarrant in place of Young and each one of those contest is getting spoiled towards the boundary.

I really don’t think it was a great performance tbh. It looked like a better team absorbing the hits from a bottom team and overcoming it. Like in all of our non-wins, we won 1 quarter and lost three.

Carlton: won 1 quarter, lost 3
Adelaide: won 3 quarters, lost 1
Collingwood: won 1 quarter, lost 3
Western Bulldogs: won 1 quarter, lost 3
Sydney: won 1 quarter, lost 3
Melbourne: won 1 quarter, lost 3

No surprise that we’re in the bottom 4 on both the ladder and in quarters won, which isn’t a good sign for us.

Yes, that 1 quarter we won in losses is usually good enough to make the game close at the end, but that’s usually what “past-it” teams like ours do. A quarter of brilliance here and there, but nothing much other than that. With or without injuries, there is just not enough players in their prime at the moment. Most of our AFL-selected players are either ageing or inexperienced. If we were faster through the midfield, then it wouldn’t matter as much (e.g. Adelaide 2023 and Richmond 2022), but we’re too slow to carry so much inexperience this year.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention this, * stupid and predictable how often we switch from lowering the eyes to bombing it

What game were you watching? Grundy was destroying our rucks but Balta was able to stem that clearance flow. Tell me you weren’t watching that game with 12-minutes to go and thinking we were cooked and going to lose by 30+. The only reason we didn’t was because we levelled the ruck contest.

Demons were missing only Salem from their best team. Our backline was missing Tarrant, Gibcus and Broad - all 190cm+.

We won inside-50’s and contested ball. We lost that game because of poor kicking for goal, it’s as simple as that. Demons missed maybe 2 relatively easy shots. I reckon we missed 8.

Coaching is putting the team into a position to beat the flag favourites despite missing a heap of players. It’s not coaching when players miss easy shots.

Agree. It was a few accurate kicks away from being a master stroke. That stage as a coach you have to try something to win the game. I always had a philosophy when coaching that you’re better off trying to win the game and lose by 60 then sitting on your hands hoping it happens.
Had to try something to stem the flow and it did

Good effort from the boys. Some poor second half coaching decisions probably hastened our demise.

Clarke, junior, Mansell were crap and Dusty and Bolton pretty disappointing. Didn’t give us a chance up forward.

Defence was okay until the substitute which proved to be a massive coaching blunder.

We didn’t do enough over the match to help our mids. We dropped guys into defense but still refuse to put numbers around the ball. It was clear by 3 quarter time that we’d gassed our midfield yet we persist with this stupid notion that we can create “dirty ball”.

It hasn’t worked since hocking ball, but sure, let’s keep trying the same thing in case this is the week that it does work.

We seemed to have fallen into a pattern of choking at extremely important moments in a match costing us game after game. It's a disgrace. We seem to be in every game yet a quarter, s**t kicking , s**t brain dead choices cost us game after game. Something us not right in the head at the club atm. We played one half of.footy then the 4th quarter we literally just rolled over and died. The most frustrating part is it seems to come from random sources.

A third gamer literally winning the game for them, not good enough and so disappointing. You sense the effort is there, but not everything else
Van Rooyen kicked junk time goals. Game was over by then

surprised about vlastuin, also highlights how martin is no where near finished

Also, that is now 10 of 24 quarters played this year where we have kicked 1 goal or less.

Disgusting. Broken. Unacceptable.
Wow that’s awful. Something we need to address because we’re not winning many games that way. Lynch was one of the worst players we could have lost

Good to see Ryan really show a bit , hope he can build on that , hard to Ruck against Grundy and gawn
Was great to see him on a dry deck
Took some really nice marks and was decent around the ground

That first goal he kicked was also sublime

His other set shots not so much but not going to crucify him for it
We have found one

Lost the game because we simply cannot execute goal kicking. What do the forwards do at training ? This is simple U17 goal kicking from 40m out - no wind and perfect for footy ? FIVE easy shots, and down the other end, their 5 shots sail through. That's the game.

What facilitated three of their converted shots was an appalling coaching error subbing Miller, sending Balta forward while Jack was on the bench. Then Cumberland's houdini second half and we halve 4 forward entries for simple chest marks to Dees defenders. On top of that, we have Rodan's goal line mistake and Van Rooyan's "mark" stolen for Gawns hands and there's the game.

Glimpses of Dusty brilliance was great to see, Hopper and Taranto are settling leaving Prestia with less workload. Yes - Prestia looks down on numbers, but without Hopper / Taranto, he would have had his first long term soft tissue injury for the year by now.

We have too many out to seriously trouble the Dees, but again, we really shot ourselves in the foot with poor conversion and poor coaching in the last.

Add Lynch, Nank, Broad, Gibcus, Graham and maybe Tarrant and we would have done better, but we still need to work on simple skill execution.

Out - Ralphsmith, Rioli Jr, Mansell
In - Broad, Sonsie, Ross

Your cat on your emoji is cute. The misses and I miss our beautiful little ball of cuteness but 19 years for a cat is a great innings. 🐱
Thanks, sadly she died 7 years ago now, it was only last year that I was ok enough to get a new cat, I should change my picture to the new cat, but I still miss her sometimes. :D she was 15 when she passed.

Heard some very different things about Chocos influence at the club
Did help Dusty but he was far from a positive influence in the club
You think it’s a coincidence that he had to go back to school footy afterwards for a few years before getting another afl gig

Melbourne culture is probably what’s held them back for a dynasty.
