Review Round 10, 2024 vs Hawthorn

Yeah, I understand where the “if you can’t get excited for that you may as well give the sport away!” takes are coming from in isolation.

But if a similar thing happens in Hobart next week, coming back from 8 goals down to overhaul a 17-point deficit with a mark of the year and goal of the year in the last 60 seconds, is that not cause for wider concern?

Or are we to keep up with the “bah try to enjoy the ride!” advice Andy Maher gave me in the wake of the Untenable/Swans game, and try to act surprised when we lose another Showdown or get smoked in September?

I don’t think it’s possible for my concern to be any wider at this point and it’s to no avail. So if like me you’ve long accepted that the H-Train is destined for the bottom of the ravine it’s not really “enjoying the ride” but more getting a few chuckles in while you can.

You can never not be absolutely pumped in the moment at those sorts of finishes. Doesn't change the 3.99% of the game that I just didn't want to be there and found embarrassing to watch.

TBH, I nearly left at halve time but spent most the game on my phone posting my dislike for Ken. We dodged another bullet from an below average team at home.

I'm not sure we did work out their kick in strategy. a number of times in the last qtr that long kick to the open side on the Eastern wing was there, just that Hawthorn had clearly put the cue in the rack and were playing it safe and not once took it on like they did the previous 3 qtrs.

The free kick count go to 14-3 at one point. Although saying that at that time we were second to the ball on almost every occasion, and we had alot more going wrong then just the umpires.

When all was almost lost did i see Bergman in the centre square for a bit? I'd rather we try Bergman in there then Mead to be honest. I know Mead was good against Geelong but they had one of the league's worst midfields that game. He's too slow, small to be a long term mid, I'd rather those minutes were given to Bergman.

We definitely stopped the progression of coast to coast carries from our pointspalooza. But we never did anything creative with our kick ins.

They did give Bergman a run through the square, he's actually not a bad option, he's strong, quick and a long kick. Mead had a good run through the middle and looked alright again.

Oh and Boaky, bless him he can win the footy like few on our team but his kicking reduced me to tears. Maybe it was the rain, not tears. No, it was tears. Uncontested shot on goal, point. Short pass from a free kick, hit up a Hawk.

I realise weather conditions were poor but 6 of our taller 7 forwards and backs were pretty ordinary. BZT gets a reprieve, but between the four taller forwards, Aliir and Ratugolea, our big guys weren’t great and haven’t been much chop all season.

Nope, our players look scared and timid for 3 quarters to dare the center corridor. Especially from half back. There were a few times I was screaming out, take the game on when there were holes in the middle to be kicked to a leading player.

Aliir has been found out and needs to reinvent himself otherwise its the Magoos for him.

Allir has been crap all year.

Actually the Hawthorn player McEntee tackled was going for the disposal. Even more htb.

The whole crowd knew it was BAALLLLLL. Imagine if the umpire did give the free and DBJ had not kicked it.... Mcandcheese to win it after the siren!

It's easy to complain after a game like this because for the first 2.7 quarters they were pathetic. At the same time, I'm not sure Hawthorn could have played any better. It was a case where all the luck was going Hawthorn's way. Every 50/50 contest, every odd bounce of the ball, players running onto the ball seeing it hit their toe and then inexplicably go out on the full. Was one of those days, and typically when it's going like that there's not a whole lot you can do.

It's why the boys also deserve credit for staying in the contest, keeping up the fight and producing a massive comeback. It was super impressive given the wet conditions.

At the end of the season no one is going to care how Port won this game, but it will count for 4 points just as much as any win this season. The biggest positive I can takeaway from the game as a collective is that this is one of the few times they've been able to chase a team down late to win. Typically, Port get out to a big lead and then almost cough it up, but it was the reverse today. That is sure to give the team immense belief going forward that the game is never truly over no matter the circumstances.

The AFL is a very even league this year. Collingwood barely got over the line against the Crows. Geelong got smashed against the Gold Coast. Melbourne were shit against West Coast.

Bad games happen for all teams. When you're winning in spite of that, that's a good sign going forward.

Well done campaigners.

Amazing come back. Not sure how it happened, but it did.

Gritty wins like that galvanise a group creating resilience and belief.

We are toast now. Good luck for rest of season and finals. Kudos, amazing come back.
We are a team of soft *****. There wont be any galvanising. Thought it was a top effort by the Hawks.

Allir has been crap all year.
Aliirs been crap for a while bar the AA season. If the guy had some mongrel about him he could be the best defender in the league but it's his Achilles heel. If you take intercepting out of his game, he's basically useless. His dropped marks and fumbling has become more evident this season, elite at reading the game though which is something I will give him.

Hawthorn have beaten Saints and Bulldogs over the past few weeks.

We are on level pegging with the team we beat last week.

Essendon are sitting 2nd.

The next game we are seriously concerned about is against a side sitting 10th

It's bizarre.

How many times were we given the shush sign today? Chol. Ginnivan. Maybe one other. Karma.

Is that what they were doing ?
I thought Chol was telling us what they were going to lose by.

Amon barely has a step after collecting the ball, so its pretty harsh to try and claim he has prior opportunity.

And he's clearly making a genuine attempt at a legal disposal. Play on is the correct call here.

This wasn't one of those cases where the player waits for the tackle and the ball is "knocked out by the tackle" in the perfect way for a teammate running past.

If it was called, Jed would've slotted it. Kicking the goal after he gets hit up when he finds himself wandering around on his own is the most reliable part of Jed's game.

The best bit about this game (apart from the last 45s) was the Hawks end to end goal from the long kick out over the top and the memories that it brought back of Port doing the same thing with Matt White in those exciting early Hinkley years.

I'd love to see us bring it back to stretch opposition kick out zones.

We have the kickers to do it in Houston and in particular Farrell.

Just not sure who we have with the genuine pave to make it work.

Perhaps DBJ?

Maybe Rozee?

Definitely looked like burton couldn’t bend over, I would have put money on it seeing what I saw so to hear there was rumour he’s got a back issue makes absolute sense.

Why are we playing him if he’s not fit ffs. Get him right.

There were comments on 5aa before the game that he was running laps at training rather than participating in drills during the week.

He takes 3 or 4 (albeit little) steps, goes to kick the ball and gets caught. Doesn't matter anyway, DBJ gave us a far more spectacular finish.

The various radio commentaries were priceless listening. :D
