Autopsy Round 13, 2024: Positives and Negatives vs North Melbourne

Vast majority of them have been picked in the last 18 months. How quick do you expect players to develop? Quite a few have been injured.

You are the one claiming the drafting has been poor. So which picks do you think have not been as good as they should?

I’m saying that having gone to the draft for 3 years. We should have more than what we do pushing for selection, and better output from the under 21’s a whole.

Gaff and Sheed being selected in this team shows just how little is currently coming through.

We’re also a long way from the finish of the rebuild - many more drafts are needed. I think that Harley mania has altered expectations way too much although I’m not really referring to the poster you have quoted here.

While it's been improved this season, we have to take into account the wasteland that the Beagles have been. It's hardly been conducive to sound player development.

Relative to where they were taken and expectations I'd be considering Long and J Williams successes at this stage.

We need to put that into perspective though.

The last handful of games has been the first time in 3-4 years where our top ups haven’t been bog for us.

Last year and early this year our best players in WAFL team have been players from ammos or players delisted from other clubs.

This year our BOG have been Ryan in his first game, Sheed, Gaff Culley (an MSD pick), Ruscoe (delisted) and Hutchinson who was playing country footy 6 months ago.

Hall has been decent last couple of weeks.

Even at WAFL level kids are struggling to hold their own.

That’s a huge red flag.

TBF, when you finish last and your second pick is pick 30 in an 18 team comp you would have to say the system has done us no favours.

We are just not serious about the rebuild whilst we keep playing Gaff & Sheed , it's clear Simmo is coaching for himself and an extension trying to get W , instead of developing.
Our midfield composition and depth is just horrible though. Without two of Reid, Kelly, or a fit Yeo, we lack class, speed, and burst from stoppages.
Recruiting a gun stoppage specialist this year like Warner should be priority numero uno come trade week. And if that fails, we must draft another with our first pick.

And you still havn't answered my question.

Becuase youre question is a straw man argument.

I’m not retrospectively saying that pick x player at y pick was a mistake and we should have selected player v

I’m saying as it stands, the players we have picked at the most recent 3 drafts are on the whole struggling at WAFL level.

At the halfway mark of the season, it’s really hard to find anyone other than Harley and Hough who have really taken a big step forward and exceeded expectation in the way we would have liked pre-season.

Some players have made marginal gains, some are showing small signs of improvement, but overall our young players aren’t showing the quality we would have liked.

Sure, but it’s the same system 17 other clubs are working under.

3 years in to a list build and we are still rolling out Sheed, Gaff, until recently Rotham and Jones because the guys we’ve taken aren’t at the level to even push those guys out.

If you dont think any of the picks have been disappointments then what you are arguing makes no sense.

Which players havnt taken a big step forward that you think should have? Harvey, Dewar, AReid, Livingstone, JWilliams, Chesser, Hough, Hall, Trew, Culley have all made positive progress this year. 18/19 year olds that arent midfielders are unlikely to dominate at WAFL level.

Stop saying our young players havnt showed quality if you arent willing to name which players and why. This vague stuff is weak. I genuinely cant think of any young players that have taken a step backwards this year.

I’m saying that overall, our list build is flagging, and of 12 or so picks we’ve had, the output of most is currently at WAFL level or below.

Coby Burgiel got 4 touches the WAFL 3 weeks ago.

How does an AFL listed player get 4 touches on WAFL?

Of the ones you listed some have taken marginal steps forward. None except Hough have shown they have genuine AFL quality.

Let’s not forget most you listed are currently playing in the WAFL and struggle to be competitive without sheed and gaff in there playing key roles.

We have an entire list to overhaul, and other than Harley and arguably Hewett no one that we have on our list look to become genuine A graders.

Just because we have lots of young players doesn’t mean we have lots of young talent.

If we did, they’d be making a case to be selected for AFL.

Since when does karma involve interpretation of made up afl game rules?

Freeloading off other clubs indefinitely is a karma causing event which, I guess, north are paying for. Having Reid is our just karmic reward for keeping your club afloat.

I am sure Kane will come out and defend her bum child.

As for jeering for another side to go into admin, EVERYONE else does and wishes your club to fold. Heck your own fans don’t want to watch you.

Back to establishment and age of club, let’s see who becomes older before they fold. Era of cheap money is over, which is only thing that kept north in it.
Wow I’d be really upset if any other team folded, seriously. What kind of market driven crap is this? We go to watch footy, not the economy. Youse are weird. Anyway I’ve overstayed my welcome I’m sure.

Who gives a ****.

This is a footy forum and both of you should just stick to ****ing football without talking about who is genociding who in Middle East.

Look it’s pretty clear who’s doing the genocide but I’m pushing my luck here anyway. For the record, I actually don’t mind the eagles as I grew up in the early 90s and loved watching your side play as a kid. I just hate the casual attitude towards clubs folding: I legitimately don’t understand how you could barrack for that. Hate a club, take joy in them losing, troll their fans: that’s all part of it.

But do youse remember Fitzroy? That like devastated actual human beings like you and me who were just born into following a different team/franchise ;). I really find it difficult to understand how any true footy fan would actively wish for any team - whether their history is 150 or 40 years old - to stop existing.

I for one don't think you should be folded.
Just shipped off to Tassie and renamed.

Yeah I think feelings are a little bit raw at the moment. Anyway these debates were decisively made and refuted back in the 90’s. No one is going anywhere AFL House has decided that all 10 Melbourne clubs are never leaving no matter how bad they are. I thought the weekend’s game was classic Shinboner spirit. Hell Melbourne looked like an absolute rabble for a while and they got through it. Having said all that thanks for Simmo, Petrie and Reid.

I have no issue with your politics, simply you and others derailing the thread.

Reporting all of you for off topic.

In terms of wanting your club gone.

You’re a net drain on the entire competition, you leech money from the afl, can’t make a profit without huge handouts and selling games to Tasmania, and contribute to spreading the talent far too thin across the comp.

Many, including supporters of other Victorian clubs want you gone, because you contribute nothing.

There’s your answer.

Your ignoring the fact that of the 12 picks only four were in the top 20. Expecting players picked 20 onwards to be AFL quality in a few years is ridiculous.

Burgiel has never had less than 10 touches in the wafl so no clue what you are smoking there.

Plenty are putting their hands up and have done well when picked.

You guys understand footy through an economic lens first and foremost? Maybe some suits in club land do but I’m surprised actual fans would. Gold Coast, GWS and St Kilda are all allocated more money than us. We also have $0 debt while the Saints are 11 million in the hole. Should they all be folded too? Should Melbourne have been folded when they were as shit as we are now and way less secure off field? Do you just wanna play Freo every week or something?

It’s amazing from north fans given they have won one game, and that’s because we were inaccurate.

Apologies but nothing you ever do (apart from premiership) will wipe saying no to Reid.

Nice cover for that though. But it will wane after today.

Sorry for the intrusion, I come in peace - have been a big fan of what you guys have done this season.

Now, enough of the pleasantries, I’m off for the afternoon, can you hold the L for me please?
Thanks for the pleasantries. I don’t think you’ll win a game for another 12 weeks. Cheers for Reid well done on being worse than Fitzroy.
