Autopsy Round 15, 2024: Positives and Negatives vs Essendon

Meh, probably better than expected, considering our recent away from and Essendon love to flat track.

Obviously we went in too tall but from Simmo's comments pre-game, they wanted to try it and see if it would work. Likely Williams is dropped next week, I imagine.

Good to see the centre combination mixed up. Hopefully this sees an end to Sheed at CBDs for good(if selected).

Reid and Kelly to come back in makes the midfield a lot more potent.

Prepare to be disappointed.

Negative, Simpson continues to throw shade on Jake Carey. Mans going to get himself cut if this continues.

Press: What did you make of the 3 pronged attack?

Simmo: Yeah what did Ozzie kick 2.3.. [pretending he doesn't know]

Press: Yeah 2.3

Simmo: 2.4 [Don't sell my boy short campaigner! clearly knows it was 2.4 lol] Its good to see Ozzy back y'know, if he has 5 shots every week [drifts off not realising he'd visibly beaming talking about his boy] an.. oh what did Jake kick? 2 or 3? [spat out as dismissively as he can]

HE KICKED 3.1 YOU CAMPAIGNER! And he worked his arse off!

+ maric on the wing for first half, dropped off but.

Gov and his harry high pants brother.

Yeos 2nd half.

Oallen rusty af but still got it, just needs a few games.

Coulda pinched that

Much better away game, gives me hope for mer Bourne in two weeks.

- Rotham and Hough were awful. Boughs worst game all year. Rotham just isn’t an afl footy player.

Flynn ordinary

Kicking for goal costs us another game
Hough is playing such a tough role. In a one pace backline that has and will concede alot of inside 50s... I trust it wont faze him, baptism of fire.. and just you wait fellas he will be a Sheppard type albeit not top 10 draft pick

Bjw has alot of fitness accrued from forced ruck time over the past 2 seasons, seems like the most obvious JD replacement.. ready made and can even play a DEEP fwd. Ozzy and jakey can play around up the ground or at home.

Not sold on flynn down the line (clunk 1 and surprise me)
Our fwd line is fine, mids and defs need tweaking in the coming drafts. Speed and ball use. We must not forget our jet hewett..huge in when it happens.

Yeah Flynn should be better than BWilliams. Flynn’s form was very good last year.

However BWilliams form as the number one ruck this year has been better than Flynn’s.
I actually agree with this. As a pure ruck, Flynn has been much better but as a football player, Williams has offered more than Flynn even when getting smashed in the ruck.

It's a real catch 22 because we can't persist with Williams long term, which is why we brought Flynn in. But we need a legitimate forward or defender that can ruck rather than trying to play a second ruck as a forward or defender.

I still reckon Bailey needs 10 games before we rule him out as a forward.

I assume Flynn will get better as well to match his form from last year. His best is clearly above BWilliams.

But yeah so far based purely on form I would play both Williams.

100%. But one of them can play WAFL while we experiment with other ideas.

You are a sad campaigner, looking for things you can twist negatively. ooroo

Maybe a bit controversial.

I'm not happy with the way Ginbey is being coached or mentored. Right now to me he is so focused on watching a player that he misses opportunities to win the ball. ( except funnily enough when he plays wing). when he often wins the ball in the contest he is very quickly looking for a give when maybe he could step and use his strength to hold up in the tackle. He often flays his arms and plays with his bodyweight off the ground.
Look he's a kid but when he goes on the ball just let him run at it like Harley. And obviously when they get more midfield options then play the kid wing, where he can use his pace.

Left footers always have that great deception side step...he doesn't have it because he just wants to get rid of it quickly. He needs to be able to play a more freer game or it's going to take 3 years before we see this kid gain more composure.

There’s no real other ideas tho. JWilliams isn’t a good enough ruck to play more than 10% in there. Flynn isn’t good enough to play 90% in there.
That's why I suggested Jamo. He's not much chop either but he could come in and cover defensive rotations better than B.Williams can cover forward rotations.

Do you think Chesser in the middle and Ginbey on the wing might be better?

A solid performance today. Really enjoyed that Ryan and Brockman were in the midfield from the start of the game and not after the team is already down by 8 goals. The result came down to accuracy at goals pretty much, which is a great effort considering Essendon are a top 4 team currently (though they are probably a 5-8 team come end of season). Hopefully the midfield can build on this in the coming weeks with Reid and Kelly returning. I think if the midfield can breakeven/get on top, the team has a decent chance vs most teams. Gaff and Sheed's careers are done and farewell games should be held rd 23 vs Carlton.

Yes not being coached to play offensive just all defensive stuff needs to be balanced better, as
he can be a offensive threat if given the chance

Definitely feels like we have a player in mind that we want him to be. I also dont think we can have Ginbey, Yeo, Reid and Hewett in a couple months can all just go get the ball like you suggest.

I think we just need to get the ball in his hands more..
Imo we should put him at half back in Duggans role, put Duggan into the guts in the defensive mid role that Ginbey seems to be doing. Try to give Ginbey the ball coming out of defence a little bit and see what happens, even if its only for a couple of months, maybe the rest of the year with short stints on-ball

Duggan is pretty bad in the middle. At the end of the day ginbey is going to end up being the defensive mid.

I dont care what Duggan is like, my thinking is purely about Ginbeys development. This is not about winning more games this year.

If composure is the issue then we either just persist and he should come good eventually, or we try to get the ball in his hands more often, half back is perfect for this.

At least Duggan can do a tag role and is a big body for the contests. Hes not great at midfield, but he makes an servicable defensive mid.
Usually he only gets a run in there when we are getting smashed so hes bound to look crap, alongside out best mids he should be fine

No doubt he was given the tagging role this week because Sheed was out. I also think it's part of his education because to me at the moment he reacts to slowly to play like Harley. Harley sees ball gets ball, Ruben reacts more to what has already happened.

Like him on the wing though at the end of the day he may end up more in defence.

Duggans disposal in the middle has nothing to do with who’s around him. His disposal just sucks.

Teaching ginbey how to use the ball off the half back line would be useful if that’s where he was going to play.

Duggan wouldnt be in there for his disposal, hes there to man the most damaging opponent mid. Hes going to get the ball whether hes at half back or mid, but as I said its not about Duggan.

Get the ball in Ginbeys hands, thats by far the easiest off half back
