As West Coast look set to be without Elliot Yeo and Nic Naitanui for a second straight week, there’s fresh concerns on another multiple All-Australian. Here’s what we saw at Eagles training.

Gov concern

Star defender Jeremy McGovern appeared to suffer an injury setback and failed to complete Tuesday’s training session in a worrying sight for Eagles fans.

The vice-captain abruptly stopped training midway through a drill for defenders, seeking out a trainer and coach Adam Simpson.

McGovern repeatedly touched high on his right leg, mainly towards the top near his glute, as he talked the pair through the issue.

He then exited the track early while his teammates continued going through their paces.

The four-time All-Australian defender was arguably West Coast’s best in their five-point loss to North Melbourne in what was his first game back at AFL level since round 14 last year.

Yeo hopes fading

On Monday night, Simpson said he was hoping Elliot Yeo would overcome a calf injury and be right to tackle GWS on Sunday.

But the two-time club champion looked a long way off being ready at Tuesday training, running laps on the secondary oval with draftee Coby Burgiel.

Yeo went through a series of hard run-throughs with a trainer and did some light skill work, but did not join his teammates in the main group at any stage.

Ruckman Nic Naitanui only made a brief appearance on the track, doing some kicking with youngster Jordyn Baker before heading indoors to presumably train away from prying eyes.

Captain Luke Shuey was also in and out of drills for much of the session, spending time with Simpson and Campbell Chesser working on midfield techniques.

Culley’s ready

After missing round one with an ankle complaint, Jai Culley appears ready to make his return to the AFL side.

Culley, 20, played four games after being drafted mid-season last year and was one who promised a lot over the pre-season after adding some serious size.

The midfielder showcased his exciting pace and silky skills in several drills and then stood up in some big tackles as the team went through several drills focused on ball movement.

Defender Josh Rotham also trained strongly without his cast on just weeks after having surgery to repair a broken right arm.

Young tall Jack Williams also continued to increase his load after rupturing his spleen, doing stair runs on the Perth Demons grandstand before walking laps and light skill work with a team official.

Does anyone think Foley should be getting a game? Has good skills, endurance, 2 way running and a competitor who could grow into one of those players always picked, because they always play there role and always get the job done without being one of the stars?
Keen to here people thoughts on him after 16 games last year.

He was one of the slow ball movement out of defence culprits so unless he can change, he looks WAFL for me

He's slow and basically doesn't have any outstanding trait. Can't see who he would displace.

You should know it's not all about size but what you do with it!

Are you saying West isn't a combative hard at it mid who tackles hard?

We lacked urgency, hardness and intent. West delivers all that in spades and when fit has shown he can get the ball as well.

I’m saying we didn’t lose at the selection table. The selected 22 was fine, given who we had available.

The issue was the 22 didn’t put in.

This is really starting to remind me of the period between 2008-2010. We lost Judd and Cousins, but I figured we still sit mid table as we had guys like: Hunter, Waters, Cox, Glass, Kerr, Embley, Braun, Stengline and Fletcher.

Next thing you know, Kerr, Hunter, Embley and Waters seemed to be perennially injured and Stengline, Braun and Fletcher forgot how to football. Hanson's body also packed it in.

This time around it's Gov, Shuey, Nic Nat and Yeo that seem to be cooked.

And we know what happened in 2011 - with the same coach and most of those senior players you mentioned still playing.

Things can change quickly in football - a decent game plan and luck with injuries gets you there quicker than you think

Yeah, we lost so much depth in the midfield and only replaced it with Pridda, S Selwood, Masten, Ebert and Shuey.

Just shows that you don't need 22 A Graders. Back then, we probably had: Kerr, Pridda, Cox, Glass and young talent in: JK, Nic Nat, Shuey, Darling and Gaff.

In true BigFooty style, that was all Phil Walsh.

Not the size of the dog in the fight but the size of the fight in the dog in West's case. Obviously the comparisons stop there but he is Kerr like with his attack at the contest. It's his biggest asset.

I have been pissing on about this for well over 12 months. Kelly on 1 wing, Sheed on the other. Gaff out of the side. Yeo, Culley, Ginbey, Shuey, West as the inside brigade.

Exxon unfortunately has no trait that is best 22 at afl level in a competitive side. He is above state league in skill and ability in pretty much every area but just a hop short of AFL.

So lets say everyone is fit.

Out: Williams, Gaff, Exxon, Witherden, Chesser (petch to stay sub, would have had petch out but would prefer Chesser to get a full game of WAFL)
In: (from actually watching the Beagles game) Yeo, Culley, Nicnat, West, Hough.

Just as a note Foley really showed a lot more than i expected. Went really hard both ways, put his body on the line and used it well. It was a 50/50 call on him or Hough but I would prefer Hough on the basis of development as the tiebreaker.

That's because many people are in stage 2/3, whilst some still haven't got out of stage 1.

Meanwhile, the club appears to be in stage 5, after being in stage 1 in 2020-2021 and stage 3 for the first part of last season.

Think I vary between 4 and 5 depending on what day of the week it is . Tuesday to Friday I’m mostly 5 then on Game day and the day after it’s definitely a 4.

Said it after the game, but adding Nic Nat, Yeo and Culley to Ginbey will add a lot of grunt to the midfield without needing WAFL West.

Nic Nat is going to drag out for weeks IMO. Yeo still another week or two. Culley and Ginbey are the future...super excited but we have to expect up and down performances from them at this stage of thing.

We need to take action around the ball and set the standard for the young blokes. West cracking in is way better than more senior players approaching the contest with apathy and he has the age and conditioning to stand up to the physical demands better than our promising youngsters.

Sheed in the ruck feels like a deliberate ploy by Simpson to force the midfield group to win the footy and not expect Naitanui-esque tapouts.

Why use Sheed when Williams and Jamieson are both perfectly capable of sucking it up in the ruck?

"****, better throw Sheed in there instead of Big Boy Bailey so the rest of the midfield stop expecting Nic Nat-esque taps." - Simmo

So after watching the beagles game only 1 player (Hough) did enough to earn a promotion?

In: Culley, Hough, H Edwards
Out: XON, Witherden, Jamieson

Need to invest in Cheeser game time
Need to invest in Ginbey midfield time

Gov forward/ruck

Hurn Barrass Hough
Duggan HEdwards Hunt
Gaff Sheed Chesser
TKelly Darling Cripps
Ryan Allen McGovern
Williams Ginbey Shuey
Jones Cole Long Culley
Sub Petch

What are you saying? Sheed in the ruck was an accident because Simmo is that incompetent?
Because Simmo thought Sheed was tall enough?
