We really need to be smart about negating the opposition game plan from the stat of play.

Saw nothing new from the Perth Chests that they have played over the history of Country Ken's tenure.

The swear moment came surprisingly in the last when Ross butchered to Louie standard a simple 20 metre kick that should have put the team tunning into an open 50.

Execute our ground positioning early.
Execute basic skills.

Our fitness levels look good " running beside" needs to change up to "running with purpose"

Last year was the big midfielder draft, we had 8 top picks, and look what we did. picked faull early despite knowing there was a glut of talls that were going to fall down the order, then picked trainor, armstrong, sims and traded out.

truth is our list managers have decided that TT and hopper will play every game on their contracts and have probably seriously overrated dow and sonsie. they haven't realised how bad things are.

We got 2, + Hotton who will be able to go in as well, but they will take time. We also have 2 very high picks this season and 1 next year. Atleast 2 of those go on mids and we should be right. Then hope a player like McAuliffe can come on. If not, find a free agent/trade at the end of the rebuild like we did with Dion.

It will take 4 years or so until they can all play in there together though. It will be a tough watch until then, but we were all expecting to finish last for a few years. Last week may have gotten peoples hopes up, but Carltons mids are also slow like ours. Not many other teams are these days.

Like the idea of blight in f50 , has a big frame and a great pair of mits will really help shoulder a load and let H and Bauer get some space while he and lynch crash the packs . Reckon if rioli or Alger play well tomorrow they’ll break into the side , apart from Seth we lack bite at ground level and are letting it out too often

Won't be many changes next week apart from Lynch probably for Fawcett.

So we will see our midfield smashed again. Last week saw what our midfield is actually capable of but this week we saw what our midfield actually is.

So disappointed in Taranto, Hopper, Ross & Nanks game. Did think Dow was not even half as good as he was last week either. We are in big big trouble if we think that midfield is going to compete with most teams.

Today just shows priority in next 2 drafts need to be mids. Looking forward to seeing Smillie in there soon. The current mids Taranto, Hopper, Ross etc are mostly stop gaps and filler until we can recruit good young mids. Some okay signs from a few kids today which is all this season is about.
What position should lalor play ? He was isolated at Full Forward - needs to be in the action right from the start !

Midfield for most part then rest forward.

Speaking of playing tall up forward, I think everyone was saying before the game that port have no defenders so kicking it up to the goal square might have made sense. Except we were getting out bodied in the contest by spuds like fake soldo. Part of that has to do with the service inside 50 - we do well on the i50 stat but it’s as meaningless as Tim Tarantos disposal stat because the kicks inside need to be better.

When Tim had that kick on the wing just outside the arc which dropped ridiculously short and turned into nothing, I’m sure there were options to go more lateral for a simpler mark and set shot. That was too predictable.

imagine playing 393 games without a grand final appearance and you have full belief in a coach that can’t handle a coca-cola

Is that the creed?
Stupid preseason games don’t count as appearances. Boak hasn’t broken any records today.

While I am ok with the outcome today as kids got some great experience... However, I thought Nank was one of our biggest issues today. Stats might show he was even for hit outs, but Mark my word his Ruck work was horrible today. To the point that when he won a hit out it went to a Port mid most of the time.

I thought Tom Brown was really impressive down back today. Hit some nice kicks, took a few intercept marks and got involved offensively.
Hopefully this is line in the sand moment type game for him.

Taranto and Hopper:

  • Too slow to defend explosive Rozee/JHF in scrimmages
  • Stuck on the treadmill when it leaves congestion
  • Get first hands on the ball and turn it over leaving us badly out of position

I still think they play more good games than bad for us but their weaknesses got badly exposed today.

Memory’s a bit hazy but our ruck caught a hit out and I think was done for holding. If it was blight I wouldn’t be too harsh but surely Nank would know better.

Tdk outmuscled him last week by and large but Nank got better positions. Was more even with Sweet but the ball didn’t come out to our advantage usually. Nank didn’t have anyone to get the ball to most of the time either.
