No one is keeping him out.
This isn't my point at all. I'm saying he is our second ruck or we should have let him go as a FA.

And no, none of those players were why we didn’t get Davidson.

Of course it is. Ignore the 2 cat-b, we're still talking 6 back-up KPFs all of us expect will struggle to find a spot. Lefau, Gray, Kozi, Ryan, Bauer, Fawcett. It's a lot of slots for a team that, at the time of picking up Gray, was planning on drafting 3 more R1ish KPFs and giving Balta a mega-deal to play forward.

We used to pick up successful rookies all the time, Short, Baker, Lambert, Grimes. It's getting harder over time as our list is constipated. Project talls like Ryan are a big culprit.

Banks and treaize were absolutely murdered on the wings , burgiuyne had 30+ and a couple of goals . I’d bring in sonz and Kano for these two

It’s a real shame HRS got injured as he is currently our best option on the wing. I’d bring those two in to play on ball so not sure who other than Kmac goes to wing, maybe Campbell/Lalor and rest Hopper/Taranto forward.

Yeah but did you look at the clearances?

We lost 5-3 in 2nd when the game was won. All three of our centre clearances were hacks forward (hopper 2, nank 1) straight to port players. The port clearances were all handballs to a teammate with a space and only one was not a clean clearance in end.
What about the 3 handballs McIntosh handballed directly to Port players in the first quarter. Is that a Richmond clearance?

I see your point GOJJ, but I’ve just read the MRO have called it a melee and fined 6 players including 3 of ours over it. Horne-Francis punched a bloke (Short I think) who was already lying on the ground. How is that judged as only a melee?

You can be certain if the reverse had happened our player would have been given weeks irrespective of causing an injury or not. Dangerfield elbows people and just gets a fine. The whole MRO and tribunal are an absolute farce.

Rant over.
You won't get any argument from me over any of that Freddy 👍

Kaleb needs a full game, tired of him being sub

Based on what we have seen of Kaleb Smith his defensive game is almost non-existent.

Smith has now played about the average game time of a 3 game player(though across 5 games due to being sub.) He has made 1 tackle @ 0.3 per full game. And is running at about 4 pressure acts per full game. If the standard for his role is Jayden Short, he goes at about 1.8 tackles and say 8 pressure acts per full game as a defender. Tom Brown looks like establishing similar averages to Short. Trainor averages 1.5 tackles + 13 pressure acts in his 2 games.

Young players can improve of course, and I am sure Smith will, but right now it just looks like he doesn't get this part of the game at all when at AFL level. Yze spoke post game about a lack of connection within our defensive structures. So I am sure it will be a priority for the selectors.

We didn't have confirmation of Baker, Bolton, Graham or Rioli at that point so we didn't know how many if any draft picks we'd have so we certainly didn't know we'd be targetting kpps. We also didn't know which picks and we certainly didn't know who would and would not be available... don't be revisionist.

Agreed re Smith. The issue with our list is that we don't have mant general defenders in the wings. His disposal was poor on the weekend (assume it isn't always that shaky) and he doesn't seem great in any aerial contests so what does he bring?

My changes based on the game (plus half the VFL game I saw) would probably be:

In: Lynch, Sonsie, McAuliffe
Out: Banks, Smith, Fawcett

We probably have to bear in mind with Smith he missed his whole first year with the foot injury, then was on limited training 2024 to minimise the risk of recurrence. So he has been badly hampered and we need to temper our expectations accordingly. He is trying to become a Short or Houli. His injuries and late birthday means age & experience wise his 3rd season on the list probably lines up with Short's 2nd season - 2016. Short was still 2 years off establishing himself in our best team.

Houli in his early years was in & out of Essendon's team.

I would really like to see some defensive impact from Smith though, certainly by the end of 2025.

Isn't Hotton both of those things.

Lalor and Smillie are both inside outside players as well. McAuliffe played much more outside today than previous, so he is obviously working on that side of his game. He was very good on the outside today because he has a good kick, is fast and strong as an ox. He will need another full season to get that ability to run continuously as he is carrying a lot of weight around, but eventually it will happen.

Eventually, the form of Hopper and maybe Taranto, can't be hidden forever, we are not a charity. If they are holding us back they will eventually be dropped. But it's rd.2 so early days.
Face it.
We don’t have the balls to drop Taranto or especially Hopper.
Until we make the top guys accountable, the rest will never be.l

Very shortsighted. Burgoyne is in his fourth season of senior footy and now has 38 games.

Banks is in his third season of senior footy and has 23 games. Tresize has 10 games, averaging 14 touches and 4 marks.

Burgoynes first 13 games in his first 2 years he averaged 10 touches. I’m sure he got torched many times early in his career also … especially in 12-goal smashings.

In fact, how did he go in last weeks thumping by the Pjes? 16 touches and just 50 SC points… he was woeful.

Given our lack of depth in his position, he's likely to get a go as well.

You go in with too many kids, you'll get smashed and fatigue the kids too much. So much work will be put into Taranto and Hopper each week because we don't have much else. I'd just like to see us rotate a few more guys through the middle to build up their capacity. Lalor should be 80/20 forward/mid, Smilie should get looks in there once he gets back from injury, Sonsie should get inside mid time, Kmac2, Seth as well. Just have some zip to go with the grunt. Prefer to see one of Taranto and Hopper in each CB, not both of them most of the time.

out : fawcett tresie dow
in: big sexy mcaulliffe maurice junior
Junior is at GC admiring his nephew. He forgot the season started and is still on the pies But I heard from a reliable sauce his has taken a liking to the kebabs :)

So you would have kept Balta to play a position that doesn’t suit him, and would have let him go if he was to play a position that does suit him? Despite being our best KPD?

We didn’t select Davidson because we had offers in front of Baker, Graham, Pickett and Dusty; and Rioli and Bolton still under contract. Plus six draft picks which you need open list spots for Midway through the year we had no idea how many list spots we would have had open. Adding another rookie which would mean cutting additional from the rookie list, or promoting someone from the rookie list and losing a draft pick was too much of a risk.

As for ‘at the time of picking Gray we were planning on selecting 3xR1 KPF’s’ is simply not true. For one we had only one first round pick at the time. And second, it would be the most improbably prediction ever that we would know who was picking where and who they would pick midway through the AFL year.

Lastly, of the six KPF’s you mention, two are playing in defence currently. One is a third tall as opposed to a KPF, and one other is a ruck.

Also Balta has trained the whole pre-season in defence. We didn’t give him a ‘mega deal’ to play forward at all.
