Autopsy Round 21, 2024 : Hawks snatch defeat from the jaws of victory

Our destiny is in our hands for the last three weeks.

Didn't feel like we played anywhere near our best and it felt like we really couldn't figure out the Day tag.

Last quarter was too defensive- why is it so common for coaches/games like these that teams move away from the attacking style that was winning the game for them?

Really frustrating game- I felt like Weddle was properly shaken in this one as I don't think he's been man-handled that aggressively many times before.

Would have loved to see us really attack when we were 10 points up- made no sense to chip it around our f50 then go for a shallow entry.

Well that was painful. Season over in a quarter. We were never going to win the flag but the disappointing thing is that it’s made our final three games dead rubbers. Next week was set up to be a huge game but there truth is we can’t make finals now. It’s mathematically possible but it would involve Carlton losing to west coast and stkilda which ain’t going to happen.

Overall our ball handling skills weren't good today. We struggled to get a clearance in the last quarter and that hurt us badly. They developed overlap run from their back half and we found it tough to force the turnovers we were making them do in the first half.

We can still make finals. On to next week.

Absolutely gutted.

In hindsight, finn cloaking Whitfield may have been a good move.

Just disappointed that so many of our leaders wilted under pressure today.
Yeah at least Finn as the sub offers flexibility. It didn't make sense using Breust if the plan was to try and shut down in the last but have a forward as a sub. Unless the boys didn't stick to the plan.
Having flexibility as the sub feels the best solution.

Really poor leadership today on the ground.

20 minutes remaining and we start trying to run the clock down by holding the ball and kicking backwards 😤 😤 😤

Does ANYONE understand that when you give the opposition a sniff that you are trying to save a game rather than score and win a game you give up a huge advantage.

Really poor performance.

The only thing worst thing losing was listening to Kelly at the end, Jesus Christ

All match. Funny she could only mention that we last won against GWS through controversial decisions. Than hams up that we lost to Port in similar circumstances, without mentioning that too was won by Port by poor time keeping.

So you may think it was at the end, I say it was throughout the match

Dear was struggling with Buckley but when he was subbed we had Chol & Gunston vs Taylor, Buckley, Himmelberg and Idun. When the heat was on in the last, that was why we kept chipping it around. We were trying to avoid bombing it. Credit to GWS their pressure was good.

Disappointingly, their rebound also torched us which shouldn’t have been the case.

Also, Whitfield 37 touches off half back!!! Lol.

No one went anywhere near him.
Had 30 at 3/4 time and had barely been a factor. Daniels last quarter was the killer

Was it just me, or did the centre bounce after the Daniel’s goal, that then led to the Hogan goal, look like it went outside the centre circle by a metre or so?

Yep the one directly after that goal wasn’t far off identical too.

Think we are still a chance of finals though. Beat Carlton we go level on points and force them not to drop points to WCE over there and StKilda at home almost. Still plenty to play for. Can be fuming and throw the toys out of the cot but the evolution of this teams been amazing the last 10 weeks regardless of todays result.
