Re: Round 3:- Changes against Essendon?

I think Setanta is a definite to play, like you said he will have to take Hillie when he rest in the forward line.

Re: Round 3:- Changes against Essendon?

Well he does have aggression and that is a good thing, and I think we do need someone like him. He brings a big body to the team, which can only be good for the young kids in the side. Bit like RH you can never have too many of these guys in the side.

Re: Round 3:- Changes against Essendon?

Awesome situation to be in, and I think the players know that they have to give 100% every week with so many knocking on the door.

Re: Round 3:- Changes against Essendon?

On the flip-side isn't it disheartening to think players haven't been giving their all because list pressure hasn't been there till now.

Well we knew that though didn't we? And yes it was disheartening, frustrating and not to mention embarrassing. But at last after seven years that light at the end of the tunnel is getting brighter.

Re: Round 3:- Changes against Essendon?

IMO there are three spots up for discussion:

Spot 1 - replacement for Jamo in the back six.
After half time last week, Brisbane beat us by four goals. This was largely due to the structural problem in defence after Jamo went off. Bradshaw was too powerful for Bower, and perhaps even more importantly, Waite's run was reduced. This in turn helped to take a little pressure of their midfield, who started to dominate in the third quarter, especially when Judd was off the ground for a spell.
You can mount a reasonable argument for any one of Grigg, O'hAilpin, Austin and Bannister to get the nod, depending on matchups, and on fitness and player-development considerations. Personally, I'd go for Grigg.

Spot 2 - Nick Stevens must come in.
Nick is still in our best six players, and has been earmarked for the half-back sweeper role, so some unlucky player has to give way. Arguments can be made against Scotland, Russell, or Johnson. More unlikely a midfielder could make way, with Robinson being the only real possibility. My nomination would be Scotland. Tough call.

Spot 3 - Yarran or Garlett?
Again it can be validly argued either way. IF I had ONLY seen the game live, I would be swayed by how easily Garlett the butterfly gets outbodied, and I would give Yarran the nod. If I had ONLY seen it on TV, I would remain impressed by Garlett the bee, and his abilty to hurt the opposition with both defensive pressure and freakish creativity and reading of the play. On balance I'd say stick with Garlett this time.

So two changes for mine, Grigg and Stevens in for Jamison and Scotland.

Re: Round 3:- Changes against Essendon?

But why would you drop Scotland? He has great disposal and speed of the back line, one of our creative players. If Stevens does come in we can use Stevens and Scotland of the bench, will give us more options and also release Gibbs etc.

Re: Round 3:- Changes against Essendon?

My Prediction:

IN - Stevens
OUT - Jamison (Inj)

Why?

Setanta - won't get a game until we REALLY need him. Thornton and Waite can hold down Lucas and Lloyd. Ryder won't play forward this week. We have talls in Cloke and Kreuzer that will cause them headaches up forward and Ryder will be called upon.

Grigg - Seems to be highly overlooked by the opposition but trust in the MC, he'll be included when he is needed. With Stevens coming back, he'll be pushed back a week or two based on form and team balance (Stevens inclusion is, lets face it, upsetting our winning team balance, so MC wouldn't want Grigg coming in as well)

Garlett - Will remain in the forward structure based on his pressure work and would have been told by Ratts to take those 2 shots (that he unsuccessfully passed on) at goal next time around.

Yarran - Will not get a game this week. Not until MC deem he is performing his role correctly, or there is an injury to Betts/Garlett, god forbid. At the moment Garlett>Yarran, but i see this as temporary.

Stevens - Is VC and is a guaranteed IN everyweek depending on availability/form. He is not out of form and being VC he is ahead of Grigg, unfortunately for some. Stevens coming in will warrant a heavier tag than Grigg would, so imagine the potential of Gibbs and Murphy running around on sat night.

The Dons- "They know we're waiting". BLAAAHAHAH

Re: Round 3:- Changes against Essendon?

We may only have the one change, Stevens in for Jamo. McPhee is out suspended, so they may be forced to leave Ryder in their back line, meaning we may not be stretched by their talls so much so Stevens would slot onto the HBF and play the sweeping role he did in the preseason, freeing Gibbs to rotate through the middle and Waite would take one of their forwards, probably Lloyd so he can move up the ground with him, run off him from the middle and hurt them the other way. Thornton would take Lucas and Bower their other tallish forward whoever they choose to play.

Why would having a forward out suspended force us to play another forward in the backline???
If anything, Ryder would be playing more of the game in the forward line

I actually quite like that slogan "They know we are waiting" wonder if they will wait after we come.

Just here for a bit of friendly discussion, but I'd say you have this fairly wrong.
Pears/Daniher/Fletcher down back, with Ryder/Lucas/Lloyd forward would be our expected lineup. Pears/Daniher being very inexperienced could well get thrashed, but i'm quietly confident they can hold their own.

Pears > Fev, Daniher > Cloke, Fletcher > Kreuz sounds about right, with Fev being the worrying one. If your midfield gets on top (as you'd expect), we could be in for some trouble.

Given Lucas/Lloyds recent form (or lack thereof), and McPhees suspension, We can't really afford not to play Ryder forward. Hopefully allowing us to make Waite accountable.
Bellchambers may even be a chance to come in, leaving Ryder as a permanent forward.

Re: Round 3:- Changes against Essendon?

Has he changed any of his clothes since the fire?

Re: Round 3:- Changes against Essendon?

Judging by Bannister's performance during the weekend, there will probably be only one or two likely changes. In Bannister, Stevens Out Jamison (Injured), Garlett (omit)

Re: Round 3:- Changes against Essendon?

Probably the only time I would agree with Pagan. Austin needs to get games into him to become a good player in our defence. He has lots of upside, although he didn't play in the Bullants practice match on the weekend. Not sure if they were just giving him a week off.

Austin is the future, more than Setanta.

As long as Bannister is available, Austin will not play.

Re: Round 3:- Changes against Essendon?

Well we need to keep blooding kids, give them a taste of it. Lets face it we are going to get smashed every week, and when we do win the other team was just crap.

Re: Round 3:- Changes against Essendon?

Can Grigg play in the forward line?
Perhaps Grigg will be promoted to shut down Winderlich's run ala the job Grigga did on Heath Shaw...

I'd go with

In: Stevens O'hAilpin
Out: Scotland Jamison

Garlett brings defensive pressure and pace to force a turnover from his likely opponent in Dempsey or Myers.

I'd keep him in.

Garlett just has to back himself in more and stop looking for a teammate.

Twiggy has the skill after he threaded the eye of the needle with a perfect pass on his left and hit his teamate on the chest.

Carlos has to be promoted.

A Carlton supporter made a good point that we will be caught short and exposed for height if we lose another tall in the game. As it stands, the Bombers will want to stretch our backline with Hille and Ryder pushing forward. Yet Essendon will have just as many headaches with Jacobs' presence allowing Kreuzer to rest forward and pick up touches around the HFF. Kreuzer must push forward after the bounce and present to create space for our forwards by drawing a defender to him.

Hille won't have it as easy this time round with 200 cms and 110 kgs of ranga on the other side of the centre circle. :D

Our rucks just have to break even with Hille to negate his impact and make it an even contest in the midfield.

Judd, Hadley, Gibbs and Murphy will take it from there.
